Overall Rating: 4.9 / 5 (Excellent)

Pets Best provides pet owners with a lot of latitude in selecting the right coverage for their pet and the best plan for their budgets. Its plans are quite comprehensive and comparatively low-cost.

The company offers two benefit limit choices: $5000 or unlimited. We prefer plans that offer the option of unlimited coverage, particularly when adding it doesn't drive costs sky-high. That's the case with Pets Best.

Pets Best has no age restriction; they will cover dogs and cats regardless of how old they are. The company does not exclude cruciate ligament issues so long as they occur after a 6-month waiting period. That's a significant competitive advantage for owners of dogs susceptible to that type of illness. In addition, plans include coverage for accidental dental and some dental illnesses.

Combined with the company's relatively low premiums, that make Pets Best a solid choice for pet parents seeking comprehensive, affordable protection.

Pets Best Coverage

Coverage - 5 / 5

Pets Best offers three levels of coverage. The Essentials plan reimburses you for the wide range of veterinary services offered by most pet insurance plans, but excludes exam fees for accidents and illnesses and rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. The company's Plus plan adds exam fees to the list of covered services and its Elite plan includes rehabilitative, acupuncture, and chiropractic care.

Pets Best also offers two tiers of wellness plans that can be added to any policy for an additional fee.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 5 / 5

Pets Best offers two benefit cap options: $5,000 or unlimited. We like to see plans that offer, even at a minimum, significant coverage. One serious accident or illness could result in veterinary bills way in excess of the low benefit limits some other companies offer. $5000 seems a reasonable and cautious amount of insurance to carry if you want to be fully prepared to give your pet all the veterinary care he or she needs.

$5,000 or Unlimited

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 5 / 5

Pets Best allows you to choose a reimbursement level of 70%, 80%, or 90%. Combined with the opportunity to customize a deductible, that flexibility can make pet insurance more affordable for a wider range of customers.

Maximum Percent Reimbursement

Deductibles - 5 / 5

Pet's Best allows you the flexibility to set your deductible in increments between $50 and $1,000. That's a broader range of options than many plans provide.

Pricing: How much does Pets Best cost?

Cost - 5 / 5

Pets Best pricing is quite flexible. The company allows you to choose deductibles ranging from $50 to $1000 and reimbursement levels of 70%, 80%, and 90%. There are however, only two choices of benefit limits: an annual cap of $5000 or unlimited benefits.

The company's two higher-priced plans include reimbursement for exam fees resulting from accidents or illnesses, a feature that's not often found in other plans and can wind up saving customers quite a bit in out-of-pocket costs. Overall, Pets Best provide excellent coverage for the money.

This is insane. There are FAR too many bad reviews to dismiss. I signed up for PetsBest but I'm still within the 30 day trial period. I wanted to provide the best care for my dog, but PetsBest will not be the way I go now. The editor even felt the need to point out the bad reviews to readers (And I thank him for that). Warning bells are going off all over the place. They need to learn that reviews make or break a business and when your business dealings are shady and littered with loopholes, then it comes back to haunt you. Review after review complaining about loopholes for paying on claims and then hearing about all the payment increases...yeah no thanks. Part of their policy... Read More

Hi Jill, we are sorry to see you go before giving us a fair chance as what you have drafted is incorrect about our policies. We wish you and your pet the best!

This insurance company does not live up to its promises. I signed up for the insurance and payed a year of premiums at roughly $135 per month. When it came time to pay a claim for a broken tooth (which is covered under the insurance) they would NOT pay the claim and when I sent it back for appeal...you could hear the crickets chirp....I'm STILL waiting to hear about the appeal...what a waste of money. SO VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! I will definitely shop around a choose one of their competitors. Based on the reviews below...it sounds like they have a predictable pattern= pay out the small claims but when a big claim comes in, attribute it to pre-existing or some other disqualifying... I can tell you that Pets Best is excellent for reimbursement period of claims. However, be careful and pay attention to how Pets Best categorizes any issue your pet may have. For example, I took my dog to the vet years ago for a staph infection he caught from being groomed at PetSmart and documentation was provided; Pets Best took the medication that was prescribed to treat the issue as an indicator of a condition called pyoderma. So pay close attention, they are good at creating pre-existing conditions when there are none. Because of that issue, Pets Best suggested that I shouldn't upgrade my policy to the unlimited plan when they got a new underwriter a few years ago, because they... Read More

Hi Patrick, we are certainly pro customer and advised you correctly that you should not upgrade your policy or pre-existing issues will apply. Per our policy, You may downgrade coverage at any time. Upgrading will require a brand new policy, all new waiting periods will apply and pre-existing conditions will be excluded. We recommend starting with higher coverage than you think you might need as you can always downgrade. Please let us know if you have other questions.

Thus far they have weaseled in every way they can not to pay any claims. They are supposed to cover standard exams etc as well as health problems. My dog got a rash on his skin. They at first blamed a reaction to the flea stuff and when that was proven wrong per my vet, they are now saying it had to do with his runny eyes.

Do not use petsbest, they will give the run around, they say fast claims not true, first the need your dogs medical records before you can get your claim processed 8 -30 days. Find another insurnace company that will not just take your money.

Hi Roberto, we are sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction with our claims process and appreciate your feedback. Some claims tend to be complex and in order to accurately process your claim and ensure you are receiving the most reimbursement, we may request medical records from veterinarians your pet has visited, past or present. Unfortunately, the time it takes a vet clinic to supply us these records can translate into more claims processing time for our policyholders—please keep in mind, however, Pets Best tries to make our claims process as simple as possible by not requiring our customers to obtain these records themselves. Our records show your vet clinic did not provide the required medical records to process your claims. We are sorry to see you go and wish you the best.

I've had this insurance for about 10 years with three different dogs. Interpretation of their benefits is very complicated. My policy has a "per incident" max of $7000. That means for EACH incident, you have to meet the deductible; so if your dog has diabetes, you pay your deductible and then they pay up to $7000 and that's it Period. If he then is injured, you start over with another deductible and they pay up to $7K on that one and that's it. And all exam fees that they pay must be related to an "incident" - not routine. My Boston was examined for a possible uninary tract infection. The result was negative, but because I submitted a claim (which went toward the deductible, I got... Read More

So here is an update to my review of Pets Best and there business practices. My mastiff who tore her ACL had the insurance increased from $46 to $76 in a year and Pets best tries to convince people that they don't increase insurance based on any recent surgeries but to age/geographics blah blah blah. Well my mastiff had to go back for surgery 8 months later due to the vet who performed an incorrect procedure on her. (thats another story) Pets best covered 80 percent of cost which is what insurance companies should do considering I pay almost 77 a month for her insurance, decided to increase my insurance to $126 dollars starting in June. I will now pay more money for my dog insurance then... Read More

What a rip off, Nothing has been covered, NOTHING. Dog has Diabetes, I expected that not to be covered because it was diagnosed around the same time I got the coverage, but she had other health issues and tests that needed to be run and NONE of these were covered, not even office visits even though I had that coverage. Company said it was related to pre-diagnosed condition. Additionally, as I am reading Pets Best Reviews, on 4/15/2019, I am wondering how people can write reviews dated 5/4/2019 and 6/4/2019, in the Future? Really, I think this company rips people off and writes their own reviews. Is there a law suit against them for doing this?

I obtained PETS BEST insurance for our beloved family dog Khloe. Purchased insurance on 3/1/2019 following the purchase of our pet on 2/22/2019 and also following her first veterinary visit within the 7 days to be sure she had a clean bill of health from the vet before. Well, unfortunately on 3/18/2019 Khloe rectal prolapse and had to be taken to the vet on a Saturday and then prolapse again a few hours later the same night and had to have surgery to insert a purse string suture to secure. I submitted these claims almost 20 days ago at this point, called constantly to obtain status and still told the same answer, "it is being worked on". I just feel at this point I don't know if I... If you understand what you are signing up for with this insurance company, it is a good company. I understood signing up, it would not cover pre-existing conditions and they do check. I recently purchased this for my rescue dog. I did not expect to use it so soon but after 2 months with the policy my dog had an emergent medical condition and he did not survive. Not only where they fair in my reimbursement according to the policy but also saw that my pet had passed away and canceled my policy for me. During this difficult time, they were prompt and understanding. Thank you. If I have a pet again, I will purchase this pet insurance again.
