Ambetter is a health insurance company owned by the Centene Corporation, which is a multi-national healthcare company that provides programs and services to under-insured and uninsured individuals. Ambetter offers customers affordable health care plans in 14 states including Arkansas, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Indiana, and Nevada, among others.

Ambetter is Centene Corporation’s option for a health insurance marketplace, so it’s intended for individuals who lack health insurance, and possibly don’t qualify for traditional plans.

What’s Included in Ambetter’s Health Insurance Plans?

Ambetter health insurance plans offer prescription coverage, mental and behavioral health services, integrated care management, maternity and newborn care, 24/7 nurse advice line, Ambetter Telehealth, My Health Pays Rewards, and optional vision and dental coverage for adults.

The company has three plan options to choose from: Ambetter Essential Care, Ambetter Balanced Care, and Ambetter Secure Care, which are classified as bronze, silver, and gold, respectively.

The Ambetter Essential Care offers lower monthly premium payments, but higher out-of-pocket expenses, the Ambetter Balanced Care offers the best balance between monthly premium payments and out-of-pocket expenses, and the Ambetter Secure Care has higher monthly premium payments, but limits your out-of-pocket expenses.

Each plan has a different type of coverage and payment, but all of them include essential health benefits such as emergency services, hospitalization. outpatient or ambulatory services, preventive and wellness services, maternity and newborn care, pediatric services, mental health and substance abuse services, and laboratory services, among others.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Ambetter offers flexible healthcare options that fit different budgets and needs, with a few perks like the company’s My Health Pays Rewards, which allows customers to pay for medical expenses with the money they earn through the program, a 24/7 nurse advice line, and Ambetter Telehealth, which provides 24/7 phone or video access to in-network providers for non-emergency health issues. Additionally, Ambetter members can manage and pay for their account online, and the company’s website offers helpful tools like a provider search engine, and educational articles for those who want to learn more about insurance.

Having said that, Ambetter health insurance also has its drawbacks, like the fact that it’s only available in 15 states, you must sign up during the open enrollment period, and that the company may have stricter requirements to qualify than other traditional insurance companies, so customers should keep this in mind before purchasing.

Terrible. Nobody accepts it. All the doctors they list actually do not accept it for the specialized services they offer. It's a lie. They denied my tests requested from my primary. They sent a letter, to me, so I could "appeal" 2 MONTHS after the denial. (wow, thanks) Their upload system for doctor is so terrible, it actually creates "loopholes" because they don't "receive requested paperwork". This is a cash grab. Deny anything/everything until the year is over. Make it so hard to use, nobody can, then disappear with the monthly payments after the year is up. Trash company, trash service, bordering on criminal. I am 3.5 months without a diagnosis for my health issue... Read More

I have been with this company for 5 months, through the SC Marketplace and I can say unequivocally they are the worst carrier I have ever dealt with. Trying to reach a person to talk to here can take multiple disconnected phone calls. When you do get a human, they are not in this country and have little to zero knowledge of anything and completely unhelpful, and even hang up on you. Additionally, the level of importance they put on invoicing and payment collection is significantly better than customer service, physician recruitment and patient interaction. I have my invoice for the following month, no more than 4 days after I paid my premium, its truly offensive. I cannot stress... Read More

Ambetter may actually call se me to lose my house. They reached into my bank account and withdrew amounts 10x and more than I should have been paying on numerous occasions, and now I literally can't eat. Seriously. And I've submitted the same form 8 times at their request, and it's a form I never should be filling out in the first place because it dies not address the fact that THEY took money without my authorization. It's so absurd I can't believe it's even happening. I'm about to call an attorney.

UPDATE My first review must be disregarded. I made a mistake and confused Ambetter with a different entity. My apologies.

I thought I was speaking w a rep from the ACA, and he (Luis) did everything in his power NOT to correct me. He sold me a policy and told me that minus my deductible, EVERYTHING would be covered. Surgeries, chemo, radiation, etc...EVERYTHING. He even went as far to send me a list confirming what he was telling me. What he actually signed me up for was and "add on" policy that wasn't even insurance...it was DISCOUNT service for medical bills. Not only that, I asked very clearly if I could use my own doctors and he said absolutely. Just to be sure, I repeated very clearly to him, what he had told me regarding how EVERYTHING would be covered, and he confirmed. I told him I had just been... Read More

Try to find a provider that actually accepts this insurance. They are few and far between. Less than 10% of the providers taht Ambetter lists as in network that I have contacted actually accept this insurance.

My experience with Ambetter from Peach State Health Plan- has left me both mentally, and emotionally exhausted. I wish I could sue them for pain and suffering. I had an off exchange plan with Ambetter. 3 days after my son was born I called Ambetter to add him to my policy. It literally took almost a year to resolve this matter. If it wasn’t for the Office of Commissioner of Insurance- I would still be fighting this battle. However the nightmare is still continuing. All the unpaid claims that the OCI told Ambetter to pay from the previous year-Ambetter has not paid. It’s has almost been 4 months since the OCI told Ambetter to pay up. Needless to say , Ambetter you has not attempted to pay... Read More

The worst insurance company I have ever interacted with. I have never been able to link my membership to my online account as I get the message my membership cannot be found. I've called member services over and over and over and no one can help me. Usually I just end up getting "disconnected" after a while of the customer service representative not knowing what to do. Just the worst. Today I get something in the mail about using Teladoc but when I tried to sign up, it says my plan doesn't work with it. It asks me to put in my membership number and when clicking submit, nothing happens. Stay away from Ambetter!

This company is a literal nightmare! I don't really understand while consumer advocate.org is trying to make them seem like they are better than they are? Because obviously if you look at the 173 ratings they're almost all one star, yet y'all have them write it as four? This company is the worst company on the face of the Earth! My wife's only been a member for 3 days and we have over a dozen phone calls in just trying to set up our primary care provider! She has been put on hold for hours hung up on 10 out of 12 phone calls!!! One lady had roosters and goats in the background the entire time she was actually on the phone then put my wife on hold for 45 minutes then dropped the call. All... Read More
