Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Absolutely terrible. Upon sign up, they failed to mention a $25 initiation fee on top of the 1st month's fees, and that's with speaking to 2 different representatives and neither mentioned anything. Also, note their deductibles are not accurate. They stated a $1000 for my dog's policy but unlike other insurance companies, they reduce the deductible by the % they cover. This is misrepresentation and fraudulent. They should be honest about their fees and coverage and how their coverage is calculated UPFRONT! It is difficult to speak with a supervisor there and when I did, 50% of them were unhelpful and not friendly. Poor customer service and terrible transparency.

Karen - We're sorry that our customer service did not meet yours or our expectations. We do our best to be transparent regarding our enrollment fee by including this information during the online enrollment process you completed. We charge a one-time admin fee to cover your initial account set up, as well as monthly billing costs. This is the only administrative fee you will see on your account for the lifetime of your policy. In regards to how our reimbursement calculation works, we include this information (including examples) on our website within our "Frequent Asked Questions" page, and on our "For Customers" page within our website. Our process for calculating reimbursements are approved by each state's Department of Insurance and are based upon the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at enrollment. There are many pet insurance companies that use this same method for determining reimbursement amounts.

While new to this company, I've submitted many small bills accruing amounts to apply to the deductible. They advertise up to a two week period to process....try months! My vet resubmitted the invoices over and over and I'm still waiting for it to be processed. Well, not exactly, I cancelled the policy after only having them a few months. Waiting on the phone to make an inquiry, standard time 45 minutes to 1 hour plus. Only to be transferred to another person who I had to wait for another 15 minutes. Was my question answered? Only with a stall of resend the invoice. After reading and researching legitimate complaints BBB, their complaints were aligned with mine. They take it upon... Read More

Patricia - We apologize for the longer than normal hold times recently and that your Healthy Paws experience did not meet yours or our standards. After looking at your account, your last two claims were processed in the time frame advertised. However, your first claim did take a bit longer since we still needed your pets full medical records. Additionally, it doesn't appear that you were subject to any premium increases since you had not yet reached your policy anniversary date. If there is a premium increase, insurance regulations require that we send out an emailed notice to our clients 60 days prior to any increase. We always email pet parents regarding premium increases using the email address they have chosen for their account. We are sorry to lose you as a policyholder and please give your pet a hug from us

We have had both of our active Golden retrievers insured with Healthy Paws for several years since we rescued them at a year and half old. Over the years we have filed multiple claims, mostly for fairly minor testing and treatments. The claims process is very easy and efficient using their app. Submit pictures of the invoice and associated vet’s notes and typically within less than a week they get back to us with the determination. Payment follows immediately in our case as a direct deposit to our bank account. I can only wish filing a claim for my own health insurance was half that easy. Recently our 6 year old Golden, Cody who is well known for zoomies around the back yard and flying... Read More

With a French Bulldog, there are many health issues to deal with. Healthy Paws has been a godsend as each new issue has cropped up - allergies, back problems, and now unfortunately... cancer. The claim processing is painless and they've always reimbursed per their policy. We highly recommend Healthy Paws to all our friends.

We have had Healthy Paws Insurance coverage for our pets for eight years . Their customer service is excellent. The Explanation of benefits is clear as well as claim procedures. Reimbursement is exceptionally timely especially if you use their app. I would not have a pet without having the protection of Healthy Paws. In my mind it is another must have insurance just like your health, homeowners and automobile. It is so worth the peace of mind and I don't believe there is a better plan available.

We have Healthy Paws insurance coverage for our two Olde English Bulldogges. Both have several typical health issues typical for bulldogs. The insurance coverage works exactly as described. Filing claims is a very simple process, and we are always reimbursed in a timely manner. I recommend Healthy Paws to anyone looking for quality pet insurance coverage.

They are FANTASTIC!!!! I've been with Healthy Paws for over 8 years and filed several claims as I have 3 older dogs. I've never had any dispute regarding settlements. They are prompt, polite, policy benefits are comprehensive and premium is fair. I'm an Insurance Broker myself and I've never had to pull this card to get them to cover or settle a claim in a timely manner. I love Healthy Paws!!!

I had been happy with HP until recently. Their customer service had always been excellent - people pick up the phone, talk easily with you, are well-informed, etc. Something has radically changed recently. First off, the customer service reps, the three I talked to recently trying to get a simple answer to a question about coverage for a new pet, didn't know anything. Also, their English was very poor, and they couldn't understand me either, so communication was extremely difficult. Each time, they said they would get a manager, put me on hold, and simply never came back to the phone. Each time, I waited almost half an hour before having to hang up. HP did not answer Tweets. Did not... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Kensiblonde - Thank you for your kind words. We appreciate you being a longtime Healthy Paws client and that we’ve been able to provide reimbursements for your pet’s claims over those years. We apologize that our current customer service has not met yours or our expectations. We recognize that our hold times have been longer than expected recently and appreciate your patience. We have also been helping an unusually large number of sick pets at this time and that has increased our claims processing time. We have been proactively adding more customer care staff so that all policyholders can get the their claims and customer care issues resolved as quickly as possible. As with any sort of hiring, there is always a learning curve as colleagues become more confident in both the policy and our internal processes. We value your feedback, and are actively communicating with all teams and trainers to continually fine-tune the customer experience. We're glad that our manager was able to reach you via email. In that email, so as not to play phone tag, he asked if you would like to provide some days and times for a callback that would be convenient for you. As he explained in his email, we have consolidated our policy options to reflect the most affordable and effective plans for pets that enroll with us. Our current filing in your state does not support the enrollment of pets who are five and older. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee. Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs.
