Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

It was confusing to figure out which Pet Insurance company to use. I picked Healthy PAWS because they are rated the highest. It was the best choice to make. When I bought insurance, my dog was a 4-month-old puppy. I never thought I would need to use it before she became a senior. Well, at just 2 she was mauled by 2 dogs mistaking her for a groundhog. She was in terrible shape. Healthy PAWS guided me the whole step of the way to ensure great care and hassle-free vet payments. They have even called to check up on her. I want to encourage vet practices to partner with Healthy PAWS. Honestly-they make sure that it is a no-wait win-win for everybody.

Healthy Paws has the absolute easiest method for filing a claim. You take a picture of the receipt, attach it and you are reimbursed. I wish that my health insurance worked this well.

After I spent thousands of dollars getting my dog's broken toe fixed, I looked into pet insurance. I had only heard of VPI, and I wasn't impressed by the kind of coverage they offered (at the time, I have no knowledge of what their current policies cover). In my research I looked at things like what was covered and what the limits were. My main objective was not to cover ordinary expenses, but to be able to make decisions about major health care options without having to worry too much about cost. Healthy Paws made it possible to save our fur baby’s life. He is a three year old Rhodesian Ridgeback and we went to the vet with an eye injury and learned it wasn’t healing because he didn’t have any platelets. After a week in the emergency room and multiple tests, he was diagnosed with Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. It was a very emotional stressful time and we thought we were going to lose our baby. We are so grateful and appreciative that we had Healthy Paws so we weren’t also burdened with financial stress of taking care of our guy. Now we have to routinely visit the vet for bloodwork and keep him on medication, so we have had multiple claims and we have never had any issues... Read More

I really can't thank Healthy Paws enough for their help during such a stressful time with my my girl (a small dog named Sophie). First she got diagnosed with Cushings, which requires multiple tests and medication (which is not cheap)! Healthy Paws paid their 90% of the plan I am enrolled in. It was simple with the app, easy and no hassle at all. I thought that was it as far as health problems for her, but then suddenly she went into heart failure and spent sometime in the ER. The bill was $3600. I was so stressed out, but they said they would cover it. I paid on my credit card and submitted it thru the app, and again without any hassle they paid 90%. I cannot express how fantastic Healthy Paws is. I've been their customer since 2012, when I first got my Shiba Inu puppy. Earlier this year, my vet found that he had two cracked teeth that needed to come out - needless to say, this was a stressful situation all around, but Healthy Paws made it easy to make the decision to go ahead with the surgery. Their staff was friendly on the phone when I called to be sure I was covered, and were careful to consider all the details to make sure I knew what to expect. Healthy Paws has been amazing relative to other pet insurance horror stories we've heard from friends/family. There is no way we would be able to financially swing the thousands of dollars of testing for our puppy to diagnose her auto-immune disease had it not been for this insurance program. The ease of use was equally as refreshing in the midst of trying to navigate larger animal care hospitals/systems. Literally effortless: use the app to upload the receipt, submit the claim, and move on with your life! Rated a 4.5 because It's a bit more pricey than other providers but for us worth it to avoid all the red tape.
