Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We've had Healthypaws insurance for over 2 years now. Unfortunately, we just recently had to use it for the first time. I am now telling everyone I can about Healthypaws and the need for insurance on animals. We would do anything for our Lily and thankfully we won't be hurting financially because of Healthypaws. Claims are super easy to file and it only took about 12 days to get our checks in the mail. Thank you Healthypaws!

Healthy Paws has been amazing to work with. My dog needed emergency eye surgery - Healthy Paws was quick to cover it and we couldn't have done it otherwise. They even followed up with us to find out how our dog was doing. Wouldn't go with anyone else.

We are so greatful and lucky to have chosen Healthy Paws for Baloo. We honestly thought that it was just a perk, that having pet insurance wasn’t necessary but after going through a surgery and exams, we are so so happy we did! They have been great through the process, the app is super easy to use and the claims go through in no time, it has been such a relief known that our furry friend is getting the best treatment and it’s all thanks to Healthy Paws. I'm so happy I have this insurance. My dog had an emergency surgery and Healthy Paws really showed up for me. During the stressful time it took a lot of stress off my mind. My dog just had to have emergency surgery and I'm so impressed with the experience I have had with Healthy Paws. The submission process was simple and I was able to do everything online. The claim payment also arrived so much faster than I had anticipated. For the small monthly premiums I pay, it is worth every bit of assurance that I have that I never have to make a decision between the health or our beautiful dog and potentially devastating expenses. Great program, super easy to use with their app, and awesome customer service. All I have to do is submit photos of my itemized vet receipts through the Healthy Paws app to get reimbursed! They have options to get reimbursed by check or direct deposit and they provide updates throughout the claim process for you. I’ve submitted dozens of claims over the past 6 or so years for my dog who has multiple issues and I’ve always been pleased with Healthy Paws!

I don’t understand how this company is rated number one we have used them for two years. We had one incident when our Golden Retriever was a puppy with diarrhea. Our vet had to literally write a letter to insurance to have it covered. Then while on vacation my auto pay didn’t go through after two years of paying on this policy. They cancelled my insurance and tell me I must go through another year waiting period to start over. I also called them leaving a message as soon as I read my email they called me back at 4:30 AM not seeing I live in Hawaii. Poor customer Service no empathy out only for the dollar

Lynn - We sincerely apologize for our team member calling you so early in your AM. It was not on purpose or for lack of caring, just an inadvertent error. We've provided some additional training for that team member so this does not happen to any other pet parent. A Healthy Paws policy is continuous until either canceled by the policyholder or if there is non-payment of premiums. We understand that there are times a policyholder’s credit card used on the policy could be compromised by fraud or that there may be a change in bank accounts, expiration date, etc. In a case where a credit card transaction for premium payment is declined in your state, we send two emails to the policyholder informing them of the issue using the email address within their account, we re-try the credit card on file two more times and finally we mail a notice of cancelation prior to the cancelation effective date. You are correct in that a new policy would have to be set up since your original policy had to be canceled, but the waiting period for any policy is 15 days for accidents/illnesses, not a year. This was an unfortunate incident since you were not able to check your emails. Unfortunately, insurance industry regulations do not allow for the reinstatement of a canceled policy once outside of the notification period.

There are truly not enough good things I can say about the people who work for healthy paws and the company in general. They have gotten me and my pets through the most difficult times and made those times manageable. I've called them in tears and their response is "Take care of your baby. Get her to the emergency room and we got you!" They are always so kind and understanding, obviously love animals, and want to do what they can to help you. I tell everyone I know to get them. After bringing home my yellow lab puppy & 2 weeks later having him swallow a sock I thought it would be a good idea to get pet insurance. I have heard from others how dissatisfied they are with their other pet insurance but Healthy Paws is wonderful. Claims are processed quickly and I do not hesitate to call and ask them questions. They are always courteous and professional. My baby had to have major orthopedic surgery at 10 months and Healthy Paws has been a big help. They even send me emails to check and see how he is doing. I highly recommend them.
