Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have had Healthy Paws for 10 years and in the past year my 15 (he came to me as a 5 year old rescue) year old dog has had 2 operations and 1 stroke. Healthy Paws was there for me and the amount of money I was reimbursed made all the difference in my decision to get the operations or not. I had 2 other Pet Insurances in the past but going forward, Healthy Paws is the only insurance that reimburses the most.

I can't speak highly enough about Healthy Paws. I got a Havanese puppy at 8 weeks old and insured him with them after a lot of research. Thank goodness I chose them. At 9 months my little guy had two adult teeth stuck underneath impacted bone. We had to pay $2k for a dentist to drill the bone away from his teeth and I was certain no insurance would cover dental work and if they did I thought his case would be excluded , but they actually covered it! And then, about 2 weeks later they actually emailed me to follow up and see how he was feeling which I thought was super sweet. And the email did not read as if it was auto-generated, so it was nice to see they actually care. Id give them... Read More

Our two year old Goldendoodle, Sammy, was diagnosed with pythosis. He needed emergency surgery, biopsy and further treatment. Our vet bill was beyond our means had it not been for Healthy Paws insurance. I purchased the insurance when he was three months old, NEVER considering that it would have to be used in such horrific circumstances. Our Sammy is not out of the woods, but we are believing that with the help of our vet pand Healthy Paws, he will be with us for many more years. I have submitted numerous claims. Each submission was handled quicky by Healthy Paws and a reimbursement check was issued within a week! Amazing company. Without the insurance, we would have been forced... Read More

This is the best insurance anybody can rely on! Our puppy was a cryptorchid and Banfield did a crappy job on the neuter surgery. I had to transport him to SVS for an emergency abdomen exploratory because Banfield wasn't sure if they severed his ureter or vas deferens. It was a very stressful time as he had to go under 3 times in 24 hours. He was just a 6 month old puppy! And it cost me like $4500 totally from start to finish. Healthy paws covered all the cost 90% (as per my plan). It included even the rehabilitation laser therapy for his incision. I was really impressed that an insurance company cares so much that they would even cover such optional therapy costs. That's something! I wish... Read More

My little havanese dog , Carlos, has had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance since 2012 with 90% reimbursement coverage. I have had to submit a few claims here and there (digestive issues, blood tests, x-rays, stomach bugs) and never had an issue with prompt reimbursement and excellent Customer Service. What has really made me want to rave about them is my dog was in need of emergency surgery a month ago after a vicious dog attack. I was beside myself with stress and worry, but Healthy Paws reimbursed me within one week over $4,000 and followed up to check on Carlos. They go above and beyond and would recommend them highly for anyone seeking outstanding pet insurance. I'm happy to say my dog... Read More

We have had healthy paws insurance for 9 years and couldn’t be happier. We have three dogs including a rescued English bulldog. English bulldog=lots of vet bills. Never had a problem with claims being paid, coverage etc and we have easily been to the vet over 100 times for ACL tears, thyroid issues, cancer, dental issues (17 teeth pulled), etc. healthy paws has real people working there who truly understand the love we have for our pets. 100% worth every cent. Will never go anywhere else

My Sherman is recovering very well, thank to the doctor who did a great job and the insurance for taking care of billing without asking questions, and to make sure the more important thing was Sherman health. It was a rough week but thank you guys to be able and help out and thanks again we appreciate you as well. God bless.

I have a crazy, rambunctious, maniac bowling ball of a dog. Shes a frenchie. About a month ago, we found her silent and shaking in the kitchen 2 weeks ago. It was so scary. We didnt know what had happened. The hardest part about caring for animals is that they can't tell you what hurts so its often a guessing game of trial and error to help them feel better. We finally got to the bottom of her symptoms after a second trip to the neurologist to get an MRI. Her MRI revealed a nasty inner ear infection that had burst her ear drum and the infection has started to "leak" into her brain. Meningitis. I know. Sounds scary. And it was. But luckily, we think we caught it just in time,... Read More

I’ve had pet health insurance for a long time now, from different companies and Healthy Paws has been by far the best, their terms are clear from the start, you know what you will get, no hidden exclusions or weird codes that render your claim ineligible for coverage. I have 90% reimbursement with a $200 deductible and it is worth every penny. The claim process is extremely easy, and payment is super fast. I recently had to take my dog to the ER and my only concern was my dog’s wellbeing, I didn’t have to worry at the same time about this unexpected expense (over $2k). I have an English Bulldog (a breed with multiple health issues) and they don’t consider breed related issues a... Read More
