Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I’ve not been a customer for very long and we’ve already had a major injury. Our pit bull puppy tore both cruciate ligaments and needed a very expensive procedure. All of our paperwork was submitted and we were reimbursed within a few days. They’ve even emailed me numerous times asking how she is recovering. This is more than a company, they genuinely care about animals and want to help as much as possible. I can not recommend them enough. Excellent customer service, painless claims, professionalism, and caring employees. Our girl is going to be able to have a better quality of life because of Healthy Paws.

If you are looking for medical insurance for your pets, Healthy Paws is definitely is first rate in my opinion. I did a lot of research before choosing Healthy Paws a few years ago, and I settled upon this company to insure my two dogs with because of their high ratings, and the benefits that they offered was what I was looking for at the time. I am so thankful that I made the right decision A few weeks ago out of the blue, while my dog Chanel was sleeping, she woke up choking and started spitting up, and accidently inhaled some of what she was spitting up. It went into her lung and she was having a hard time breathing and her heart was racing. Since it was late at night I had to... Read More

My terrier/terror gets into trouble when she tries to eat inedible things (?!) and Healthy Paws has always come to her rescue with swift attention to our claims. We opted for 90% coverage/monthly pay, with the exception of preventive treatments, visits and foods. We have had no issue with claims-receiving a check in the mail soon after paying our vet. We are so grateful for Healthy Paws enabling us to provide all the medical attention that was needed.

Hands down the best pet insurance you can find, flexible coverage rate and reasonable monthly premium, plus the highly professional customer service team will make your life much easier. I love that how simple and easy to submit a claim, just download the app and take a clear picture of the invoice then you sit back and wait for your reimbursement. I will definitely recommend to my friends and families with pets.

Healthy Paws has been a great fit for me and my furbabies. My 8 year old girl just had TPLO surgery for a ruptured CCL and my 6 year old boy previously had many issues related to IBS and it is a comfort to know that I have the support of Healthy Paws when making decisions related to their care. The decision turns into what is the appropriate care for my dogs, not whether I can afford the treatments. I find Healthy Paws to process my claims quickly and cleanly and they send me Explanation of Benefits that are easy to understand. I have spoken to their customer service a few times and find them to be helpful and friendly. I can't speak highly enough of this company.

My Newfoundland dogs have had their lives extended thanks to Healthy Paws. We have had Newfs since 1999 but only insured their health in 2010 after having paid thousands each and every year in surgeries and illnesses. They have not ever questioned our vet submitted invoices, which were numerous in 1 case, or removed our dogs from the roles. To the contrary, they often ask how the dogs are doing. Refreshing! To say I highly recommend them is an understatement. Kathy Berezny, Va

These guys covered THOUSANDS of dollars for our dog's elbow dysplasia - the condition that's rarely covered by insurance companies. We got lucky we chose them! It's such a good feeling to be able to give your dog THE BEST medical care and not worry about the money. Great experience! Mr. Rox says thank you for his fixed elbows!

I've not used any other pet insurance however my family members and friends have and based on all the stories that we've exchanged Healthy Paws not only has the best coverage but the service is far superior and the concern for my pet's well-being is genuine. I could not be happier especially since my dog has provided plenty of opportunity to utilize her insurance policy.

I can't say enough good things about healthy paws! My parents told me to get pet insurance when I got my first dog and boy am I glad I listened to them! Healthy Paws has been a lifesaver for both of my dogs with unforeseen incidents/medical procedures. Healthy Paws makes it so easy to upload documents. They follow up with a full and detailed explanation shortly after. They even checked back in a few weeks later to see how my dogs were feeling!! Healthy Paws is 100% worth getting!
