Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My pup Bowie broke his femur back in March and since then has had six surgeries, three ear infections, and countless hospital stays, amounting to well over $20,000 in medical expenses—with more to come! Thanks to HealthyPaws, we have saved a total of $14,321.87. There is no way we could have provided our fur baby with the care he needs without the wonderful humans at HealthyPaws. Not only have they provided the financial assistance necessary, but they are kind and compassionate and continuously send e-mails checking in on our little guy. Since Bowie's injury, I have become a HUGE advocate for pet insurance and tell everyone who will listen about HealthyPaws Pet Insurance. 15/10 would... Read More

Healthy paws is the absolute best!! Recently my precious cat had a $3,000 vet bill due to an emergency. Healthy paws was a lifesaver, they covered everything except the special diet, and doctors fee, and I got my claim completed in less than a week! I had to make decisions for my cats health, and was able to quickly get someone on the phone to help me understand what was covered, I didn’t have to skimp on anything! If there had been a private celebrity cat wing at the animal hospital Healthy Paws probably would have covered it, because they treat my beloved cat like a prince!!! I also really love the personalized follow up emails!

When my 12 year old dog passed on I got another husky, a rescue. He's an absolute joy and only 3 years old. I had insurance for my former dog and was not impressed, but I did a lot of research and signed up for Healthy Paws the day after I got Bernie. Suddenly 3 weeks ago he collapsed. I rushed him to the ER. After life saving surgery and a blood transfusion, he was diagnosed with Hemangiasarcoma, an awful disease, rarely seen in Huskies, and even more rare in young dogs. He is doing remarkably well, and we are doing all we can to give him a happy healthy life. Healthy Paws covered 90% of the costs, just like they said they would. The paperwork was processed rapidly. I am very impressed.

My dog was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma. She is only 5 years old and we have been healthy paws customers for the past 4 years. Our dog has been healthy up until now and never required more than routine care. I did not imagine how important pet insurance would be until we had this very serious diagnosis. Healthy Paws has covered all of our dog's treatments and diagnostics (x-rays, biopsy, and amputation surgery) at 90%. It has been the easiest process ever they have been so helpful, even offering to arrange for an upfront payment if we couldn't afford the initial surgery payment. Without their support, our dog literally would not be with us. We are so grateful for their help and... Read More

Incredible Insurance Company. My dog suffered a traumatic fall and herniated 3 discs and bruised her spinal cord. She required a neurologist and MRI. I submitted my claim and received a total check from Healthy Paws, no arguments or delaying tactics from them. The check arrived BEFORE the credit card bills so at no time was I out of pocket for large amounts of money. I only wish that my health insurance company was as honorable. They are by far the best insurance company out there.

I recently had my kitty develop a Urinary obstruction. I learnt from the vets that this was life threatening and a very common thing among young-adult male cats! We love our cat and there was no question that we want to provide him with the best medical care for something this serious. He ended up having to stay in the ER for 24hrs with doctors doing everything to help him get through this. In all this chaos, HealthyPaws was there when I needed them - right from making it as simple as being able to upload my cat's medical records from my phone using an app to reaching out to the vet to get some missing medical record themselves, they took away our tension of worrying about the financial... i have been with this company for two years now, but i don't understand why it has to be a 32% increase payment per month in my policy this year, last year they increased it 15% and with this previous experiences, they will be increasing my policy until i wont afford it anymore. they says that is because the cost of veterinary in my area changed, but a can assure you that it didn't increase 32%, it would be crazy for a vet to increase their price 32%. this company only care about the money for sure

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Cesar - We understand that premium increases can be a stress financially and realize that this increase was larger than normal. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. We have recently seen a rise in high value claims due to an increase in the availability and cost of veterinary services. During the past year there was an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians. These are some examples of procedures performed during the last 12 months that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$14,000. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care.

Recently we had to take our cat to the vet because she was peeing blood; upon examination and a few x-rays it was determined that she had bladder stones. After discussing all the possible options, we realized the only choice we had was for her to have surgery due to the size of the stones. The total bill for all services was over 3k, but healthy paws made the claim process so seamless that we did not worry about financials one bit... they even worked with our vet office to pay them for the surgery directly, so I did not have to worry about paying a few thousand dollars up front. Do yourself a favor and get healthy paws pet insurance for your furry kids.

I cannot express how thankful I am to have healthypaws pet insurance for my poor 5 month old newfoundland puppy. I have always wanted a newfoundland and this past June I purchased the perfect puppy, Odin, from the greenfield puppies sight. After an 8 hour drive and a great deal of money I arrived home with this handsome ball of silver fluff only to find that it appeared that he had a UTI after a week or so of having him. With further investigation, and over $3,000 in vet bills thus far we found out that my poor Odin has a terribly Kidney problem that could possibly terminal. On top of all of this two weeks ago Odin developed a problem with his paw that landed him in my local Emergency... Read More

Great company! They make the claim process a breeze and really give you the impression they care for the wellbeing of your pet. This was my second major claim in 3 years, and both times they made the process worry free. Anyone looking to get pet insurance, look no further!
