Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have had an incredibly positive experience with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. As brand new dog owners, we purchased a policy for Lola as soon as we adopted her, when she was months old. She was healthy and strong, and we thought we probably had nothing to worry about, yet wanted to be on the safe side. To my skeptical surprise, this insurance has come to my rescue twice, and I am incredibly grateful. The first time was when Lola was 3, and she was bit by another dog, and needed $500+ worth of surgery and medicine. The second time has been over the last 8 months, when Lola had a UTI that required some tests, and then a few month was later when she was diagnosed with aggressive... Read More

FOR US PET OWNERS It's rare that you find a company, especially insurance company who actually stands behind their product. My one dog (milli-Amp, milli for short) has gotten very sickly over the past 2 years or so with everything from a bronchial stent being implanted to COPD, to enlarged heart, to pneumonia, to random passing out episodes, to monthly expensive medicines. If it were not for healthy paws the vet bills would be unmanageable to the tune of thousands upon thousands of dollars. Thankfully I purchased insurance for both milli & kelvin( my other dog) a while ago. And believe it or not, they actually do pay out. In fact, my girlfriend and I even have a name for... Read More

Healthy Paws is the BEST pet insurance you can get. I highly recommend this company. Not only are their policies very inclusive and reasonable but their customer service is amazing!!!!! Our 1 1/2 year old golden just needed major surgery. Not only did we have peace of mind financially knowing that we had Healthy Paws to help us out, we had Healthy Paws actually there to support his recovery. We received many emails checking on his recovery and telling us to give him a great big hug. Amazing company!!

I’ve had to file a few small claims with Healthy Paws in the past, and all were handled quickly (reimbursement received within 2 weeks), and easily through their app. But 2 weeks ago our family had to experience a near tragedy with a furry child that everyone dreads. Our 3 year old bulldog went in for surgery to open up his airways to help him breathe more freely, but complications from the surgery resulted in him not being able to breathe at all. A planned overnight visit turned into six. First he was intubated, then he had a temporary tracheotomy tube. Twice during the week the vet called me to caution they were concerned he would die soon. For all the pain it put him through, it was an... Read More

My Jeffrey recently had surgery to have a growth removed from his side. Jeffrey was a rescue so I decided to get insurance for him right after he was adopted. I have had Healthy Paws for a few years now and fortunately this was the first time I needed to make a claim. The process was so easy and efficient. From time of submission to approval was less than 10 business days. I received all but my deductible back which I am so grateful for.

I’m so glad I decided to 1. Get pet insurance in the first place, and 2. Go with Healthy Paws for our pet insurance. When my 1 year old German Shepherd ended up in the ER for 2 nights due to severe dehydration and inflammation of his intestines, I didn’t have to think twice about giving him the proper care. When the doctor requested a small procedure requiring his lymph nodes, I could worry about my dog, but I didn’t have to worry about cost. Healthy Paws also has great customer service. I appreciate how they follow up to make sure my dog is doing okay! I highly recommend this company.

healthy paws is the best thing that ever happened to me and roxy!!! she had heart surgery a year ago and before the surgery could happen needed to be drained of fluid 3 separate times. That ended up being roughly about $3,000.00, the surgery was almost $7,000.00. healthy paws never asked me any questions, they paid 80% and continue to with her health issues. She has congestive heart failure and cancer, her medications are covered 80% as well. i never have to stress about being able to afford going to the vet again!!! One of the reasons I chose them is they don't have a limit!!! And their app is so easy to use, just take a pic of your invoice and submit!!! When i call they ask me how... Read More

I cannot say enough positive things about Healthy Paws! We found that our rescued Shepard had a floating Patella almost a year after we adopted her as a pup. Thankfully after an expensive weekend at the vet after she ingested something as a puppy we decided on insurance. After a lot of researching we went with healthy paws. Fast forward to the discovery of her patella problem and we only had to pay 10% of her surgical fees minus the deductible. The customer service is top notch, always extremely pleasant and they even checked up on my fur baby after the found out she had surgery. Would highly recommend Healthy Paws to anyone!!!
