Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I did a lot of research on pet insurance when I got my first puppy, Bulleit. 1 became 3 and have chosen healthy paws for all 3. I have had them for 4 years now and have only had to file a few minor claims here and there for each of the dogs. Everytime the process was quick and painless. You can download the app and send a photo copy of your invoice. This past month one of my dogs became severely ill. She was not eating and had a high fever. It was recommended that she be placed into a 24 hour emergency Vet. Turns out she had a large abscess from the back of her spine to her abdomen, as well as having ingested a foreign body. All of this was not cheap 10K, and counting. Through... Read More

We decided to go with Healthy Paws after researching several insurance companies before getting our first puppy, and what a blessing it has been for us. In the first two months of owning our puppy she had an extended stay at the hospital. The Healthy Paws staff was helpful on the phone and through claims processing. They were incredibly fast and it was always clear what was and wasn't covered. We're so thankful for Healthy Paws and will be insuring any future pets with them.

We had insurance for a few years before we had a medical condition that qualified for reimbursement. But once that happened, Healthy Paws was a life-saver. They are prompt with reviewing claims and great with reimbursement. Unlike with human health insurance, I never feel that they are trying to game the system. Customer service is outstanding.

I recently had to use my Healthy Paws pet insurance for the first time. I submitted 12 claims in less than theee months and I have to say, their claims process is incredibly easy. I just asked my vet to email Daisy’s records to Healthy Paws. Then I used the app to take a picture of my invoice, hit submit, and it was done. Literally took me less than 30 seconds. I worked in a vet clinic and have had to fill out claims for many different pet insurance companies. Not one of them came even close to the ease of making a claim with Healthy Paws. They paid my claim within 10 days, keeping me informed of where they were in the process the whole time. And they even cover things that other companies... Read More

My experience with Healthy Paws has been completely positive. I’ve had their insurance for almost ten years and over that time my dogs have experienced several ailments and conditions that included epilepsy, a ruptured spleen, numerous stomach issues that ultimately resulted in surgery, MRI’s, pain management and shattered/destroyed teeth. Healthy Paws was phenomenal in reimbursing a large portion of my vet bills (and medication!) and also checking in on them during recovery. I have called customer service a few times and the wait time was less than five minutes, the people were incredible to work with and I am very happy with them. As insurance companies go, these folks are the gold... Read More

10 days ago I had t take my GSD to the emergency vet clinic where she was diagnosed with a twisted colon. Of course this happened on a Sunday evening. Thanks to me noticing her unusual behavior and the brilliant staff at the clinic, her life was saved. Thanks to Healthy Paws I didn't have to hesitate about the costs of this surgery. They are absolutely everything I could have hoped for with insuring both my GSDs; the rates are reasonable, they are easy to reach and speak to a person, payments are very fast, sometimes within a week. I will never have a dog without arranging health insurance with Healthy Paws. Wishing everyone good health for all their animals.

I have has Healthy Paws insurance on both of my dogs since I picked them up at 8 weeks. My view is that if I am going to have a dog or 2 :) I had better be able to take care of them! Having insurance gives me the peace of mind to make sure that when there is an emergency that all I have to focus on his my beloved dog. My older dog I have never had to make a claim but my new 7 month old puppy is another story. He is a large breed dog who has bloated 3 times so far where I have had to rush to the emergency room in the middle of the night. My last bill was close to $3000 dollars but since I had Healthy Paws insurance with 90% reimbursement my only worry was my dog Timber. Glad to report that... Read More

I am writing this review as a devoted pet parent. My dog recently had major surgery. If not for this insurance from Healthy Paws I would have been struggling with paying the bill. I just want to let everyone know how much I believe in pet insurance. Healthy Paws has been with us every step of the process, for this claim they are a very dedicated company. They are so dedicated to their clients that they sent me an email inquiring about how my dog’s recovery was going. Every time I had the pleasure of talking to someone, they were very helpful and very caring. If you purchase this insurance from Healthy Paws it will give you peace of mind to be able to help your pet.

After only having pet insurance for two months our puppy had an obstructed bowl. After 3 days the bills were close to $1500.00 without surgery. I filed the claims on a Friday night and by Monday we were informed the checks were on the way. Great customer service.

My fur baby was taken ill and diagnosed with lesions on her brain. She also had an obstruction in her intestines and had to have an MRI, Ultra Sound, operation for the obstruction and a food port temporarily put into place. Two days in ICU and she has since made a remarkable recovery. Healthy Paws, which I only had for approximately 5 months covered over $7,000.00 dollars of the $10,000.00 bill. Filing a claim was effortless and within less than 10 days of filing my claim, I received reimbursement. I highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Butterscotch is still with us in large part because of our Insurance policy.
