Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My fur baby was taken ill and diagnosed with lesions on her brain. She also had an obstruction in her intestines and had to have an MRI, Ultra Sound, operation for the obstruction and a food port temporarily put into place. Two days in ICU and she has since made a remarkable recovery. Healthy Paws, which I only had for approximately 5 months covered over $7,000.00 dollars of the $10,000.00 bill. Filing a claim was effortless and within less than 10 days of filing my claim, I received reimbursement. I highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Butterscotch is still with us in large part because of our Insurance policy.

Healthy Paws has been great to work with during a tough time with one of our dogs needing surgery and many expenses. Their help was really useful in making it possible for us to heal our baby girl, as well as the associates being really kind and checking up on her along the way! I am so happy we decided to get our pups insured through Healthy Paws.

A great company. Sign up was easy. Their mobile app was easy to use, especially for submitting claims. Most importantly all claims were processed and reimbursed promptly and hassle free. I wish all insurance companies are as efficient and fair. Highly recommend for all pet parents. You will not regret it.

Thank you for following up to check on Ellie's progress, you guys have really helped tremendously. It’s tough when you adopt bulldogs, or any breed, that were rescued from puppy mills as you don’t know the health conditions you may encounter. Ellie is the first dog that I decided to look into insurance for as my others were seniors when I adopted them so I didn’t think it was an option. She seemed healthy with no obvious issues early on but we’ve had a couple scares in the 9 or so months I’ve had her. Having insurance makes the decision to give her the best care that much easier. I would never NOT do everything I can for my dogs but I’m thankful to not be maxing out my credit cards to do... Read More

I made the decision to purchase pet insurance for my puppy after considering all the unexpected health care costs I had with my previous dog. I compared all the major carriers and felt Healthy Paws was the right choice for us. My puppy is now just over a year and a half old and I'm so glad we made this decision! Brody is a very happy, healthy and active Labrador Retriever. But he is a typical lab...he eats just about everything. Our first claim came after he decided sticks were quite delicious and had a partial blockage after deciding to make a meal of one of my bushes. Fortunately, it did not require surgery, but X-rays, treatment and medications can still add up. Filing our claim was... Read More

Dear Shelby, Flynnigan, Jennifer, and Everbody at Healthy Paws, Thank you to you ALL. The loss of my first dog Archie(I am 62) was so unexpected for us. He was only 6. I had never sent you a picture of him, but he was a beautiful, black and white Havanese, on the large size-23 pounds! He also had quite the large personality and he lit up our lives as my husband and I are mostly retired. But everybody in the neighborhood knew Archie too, kids and adults loved him. I'm writing to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the way you all go above and beyond as people servicing pet owners. So many days I called in, in tears not knowing yet what was going on, only... Read More

I am so grateful to Healthy Paw! 2 weeks ago, my almost 1 year old dachshund was hospitalized for gastroenteritis. After pain meds, anti-nausea, fluids and a bland diet, Millie is back to her old self. I can’t tell you the peace of mind having the insurance provided during her hospital stay! Not worrying about finances allowed me to just focus on what Millie needed. Healthy Paws processed my claim quickly and efficiently and the check was in my mailbox in a week. Thanks Healthy Paws!

I have had pet insurance through Healthy Paws since 2015. Until now, I’ve never experienced any health issues with my 8 year old cockapoo until now. I recently submitted 3 separate claims & from date of submission to date of reimbursement was 4-5 days. I highly recommend this company because you want to be certain your furry friend gets the care you otherwise couldn’t afford. Sincerely, Lori in New Jersey

Can’t say enough about this insurance. Doesn’t take long to get feedback on claims and get refunded. They have the utmost care for animals in general and make sure they are protected
