Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

First let me say that Healthy Paws is the best insurance company than I ever been with. They are truly concerned with your animals welfare and when you turn in a claim they pay within days and they are very reliable and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I have two dogs insured with them. I have gone the route of not having pet insurance and payed up to 18K to save my dogs life. It’s great to know that I have the backing of the best insurance company Healthy Paws. Forever thankful Melanie w Pioneer,California

I found my boy through Petfinder four years ago and i thought it critical to have a good health insurance plan for him. I did a lot of online searching and questioned many friends with pets and determined that Healthy Paws suited my needs. I couldn’t have made a wiser choice. Turned out that Petey had problem knees and the year after he joined our family, he tore the cruciate ligament in his right rear leg. The corrective surgery was major and expensive, and no questions asked, Healthy Paws covered 90 percent of the cost. I filed the claim, and in a week I received reimbursement. 50 percent of dogs who tear the cruciate in one leg may tear it in the other, and that’s wxaxtly what happened... Read More

We have been with Healthy Paws since Feb 2018. Without a doubt it has been the smartest decision for Pet Insurance we could have ever made. Recently our puppy had a horrible accident with a pickup truck. As a result, Riley had to have two intense surgeries for a broken femur and fractured pelvis. We are fortunate that Riley came through surgery (surgeons able to save her leg) and she now faces a lot of therapy and rehab work ahead. Healthy Paws has been with us every step of the way .. from easy claim submission (all online.. nice website) .. great support from claims and customer service.. and quick claim reimbursement (claim settled in approx 1 week !).. We would highly recommend... Read More

I had a very stressful time when I found out my 7 y old Standard Poodle had a mass on his liver. He also had some cardiac irregularities as well. He had to have lab tests, chest x-ray, ultrasound, Cardiac consult at UC Davis, consult with Oncologist and ultimately surgery. As anyone who's had an emergency with their dog know all of those tests and consults really ad up. Thank goodness for Healthy Paws! Once I fulfilled our deductible they covered 90% of all treatments and meds required to get my boy back up and running. Submitting my claims was super easy, I just scanned the required documents and emailed them to their claims department. Their response was within the next couple of... Read More

Healthypaws is one of the best out there. They are quick to process your claims, they make the experience extremely easy, they show genuine concern for your pets needs and are truly understanding. I wish I worked with other companies (targeted for human needs) that demonstrated the same type of consistent and excellent customer service that Healthypaws does. I am extremely grateful for them. Our poor shih tzu has been dealing with a lot of health issues and Healthypaws has been supportive of her process every step of the way.

Healthypaws has been one of the best decisions we've made when it comes to being a pet owner. It's incredibly easy to file a claim using their app and the reimbursement comes quickly. There's always plenty of communication at every step of the way which makes it feel super accessible (especially in comparison to dealing with human medical insurance companies). The best part about having Healthypaws as our insurance is that it's eliminated the financial worry that used to occur when something went wrong with our dog. Now, it's an effortless decision to make when it seems like he needs to be seen by a vet; we know it'll be covered by our insurance. That piece of mind is truly invaluable... Read More

I have been a HealthyPaws member for coming up on a decade. I have had boxers for 20 years and HP has provided coverage for 4 of the loves of my life. We have been through Degenerative Mylopathy, Bowel Obstructions, Pancreatitis, ear infections and an ACL repair. This plan has more than paid for itself. They send me e-mails to check on my puppies after events. When we lost Otis to DM last year, I received a card at my home with condolences. If only my insurance plan did the same for humans, the world would be a better place. I can't say enough about HP. I LOVE them!

Healthy Paws is absolutely the best. Amok has had a few pretty costly medical expenses including the Bloat surgery he just had. They have never given me a hard time on anything and reimbursed in 2 days on claims of all shapes and sizes. I highly recommend looking into them if you haven’t already. They have been a literal life saver.

I have nothing but happy, wonderful, positive things to say about Healthy Paws. As a neurotic dog mama (as I am sure so many of us are!), I am always the person at the vet saying, "Just run that test and I'll balk at the cost later." Luckily, Healthy Paws couldn't make it easier to submit a claim if they tried! My low deductible combined with the amazing customer service and ease of the app make what is usually a headache of an experience...a breeze. I cry tears of joy (in my mind) every time I receive a reimbursement check (which, thankfully, is not that often). Please keep up the good work, Healthy Paws! Jack Jack and I thank you for all that you do. Love, Ali (& Jack :) )

We have had a great experience with Healthy Paws. We obtained pet insurance just to prepare for some sort of terrible scenario in which bills would be really high and it would be tough for us to give the best care possible for our pet. Well, it happened -- our wonderful 3 year old dog was hospitalized for 5 nights with a serious infection. Thankfully she recovered! However one of the positive parts of our experience was our dealings with Healthy Paws. I submitted our claims for the hospital stay and vet visits -- and they reimbursed us immediately (within a day!) for the agreed upon percentage of the costs. It was truly a relief and made the whole terrible experience so much better... Read More
