Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We got insurance for the two of our cats and didn't use it in a while but once we needed it for an emergency and there was nothing better than not worrying about the cost of hospitalization and all the best care that can be given to our cat. It put our mind at ease during a stressful situation where we needed to worry more about our cat's health rather than the money.. They provided the reimbursement quickly and without any trouble! We had a deductible and the examination fee is not covered, but with our plan 80% of the rest was covered! That was over a $1000 for a $1800 bill. Thank you Healthy Paws!

New dog owner here. Brought the puppy home before Christmas 2017 and promptly began researching Pet Insurance options as my friends had told me - "if you are ever going to get a pet, get the insurance, I wish I did". I researched the many companies thoroughly - including one that was part of my company's benefits offering. After going through options and costs - and many reviews - Healthy Paws stood out among all of them. They focus on critical care - which is when you really need it. I signed up for their best plan - 90% coverage with a $100 deductible. I am so glad I did. Just a month ago, the 8 month old pup became lethargic and to make a long story short - the doctor said it... Read More

Healthy paws has been the only way we have been able to provide our dog the care he needs. They are very quick in reviewing our claims and we have not had any issues getting treatments covered. They always check in on our dog after he has a medical issue just to make sure he is getting better. I would highly recommend Healthy Paws to all pet owners.

I am so happy I signed my dog up for Healthy Paws. I never thought he would tear his ACL before the age of two and need a major surgery. When it happened the costs were upward off $6000. The whole experience has been very stressful but Healthy Paws paying 80% of the costs took a huge weight off our shoulders. We got reimbursed in a very timely manner and were able to get the money direct deposited into our bank account which made the process even easier! I highly recommend Healthy Paws for anyone with a pet.

Yes been paying $45.00 monthly for about 2 yrs and they have denied every claim I have submitted. Their coverage is extremely limited. I do not recommend this company. I’m about to cancel my little chihuahuas policy. It’s just a total waste of money

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Dotty - we’re sorry that your pet wasn’t feeling well. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee. Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. Healthy Paws does not offer wellness coverage, because in most cases the monthly premiums for wellness insurance total more than what you would normally pay your vet directly for wellness care. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. In regards to your submitted claims, some were covered and reimbursed based upon the reimbursement level and deductible you chose at enrollment. Those that were not covered were wellness items that are excluded from coverage or conditions that were noted in your pet’s medical records prior to enrollment and therefore a pre-existing condition not eligible for coverage. If you decide to cancel your policy, we hope you and your pet stay well!

Excellent provider. Super fast and easy to submit claims, always processed fast a day or two. Always cared and followed up about my dog. When he had an emergency pneumonia they even agreed to pay upfront and dealt with everything which gave me so much peace of mind in a horrible time.

I am so happy that I have HealthyPaws pet insurance. My 12 year old tuxedo cat was recently diagnosed with Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). His treatment included catheterization to clear his bladder, numerous vet visits, blood and urine tests, frequent monitoring at the Vet's office and 2 weeks of meds for after care at home. I submitted all the bills for his treatment and medications using the HealthyPaws app, which is amazingly easy to use. HealthyPaws reviewed and approved my claim the next day and the funds were in my account within days. Everyone from HealthyPaws is a pet lover and understands how stressful it is to have a sick pet and worry about the cost of... Read More

My experience with Healthy Paws has been nothing short of amazing. Insurance companies are typically known for bad customer service and exploiting loopholes to not pay out claims. Well, healthy paws is nothing like that. They have pleasantly surprised me from day 1. Not only are their policies fair and affordable, they are also great at customer service. They have paid out several claims for vet emergencies, including the most recent one for an ultrasound and many tests for my dog’s stomach issues. A couple days after entering the claim and when they processed it they reached out to me to check in on my dog’s progress! Not even my medical insurance company check up on me lol. Healthy Paws... I want to express my sincere gratitude to Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. I have carried this insurance since 2011, hoping I would never need it! However, my Keeshond, Riley, has recently been through cruciate ligament tears in both his back knees. His problem required several surgeries and I was distraught at seeing him in such pain. It's enough to have to deal with a loving pet experiencing pain and unhappiness, but medical expenses on top of that is extremely stressful and overwhelming! Healthy Paws was there for me, not only with relief from expenses, but email support and caring! Thanks to Healthy Paws, Riley is slowly getting back to his "puppy" personality - no running and...
