Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I love Healthypaws pet insurance. They are reasonably priced. You can pick the amount of your deductible to make it more affordable for you. The deductible is yearly, not per incident. It is extremely easy to make a claim. The response time is quick. You just need to read the policy. They don't cover doctor's fee's or wellness visits but do cover 80% of covered expenses. My dog is being treated for her 2nd cancer diagnosis. Healthy paws has been wonderful and helps to make this treatment possible.

I have used Healthy Paws for over 10 years and boy has it been a life saver on our pocket book. This is the best insurance I have ever seen and the process is so easy. Just email an invoice and within a few days there is a deposit in my bank account. They are always so caring & follow up to see how our fur babies are doing after a big surgery or treatment. Such a special touch! From the first month we adopted one of our babies he needed a root canal & no issues with being compensated 90% back to now, 10 years later he is being treated for cancer and still 90% pay back of all the vet bills. So worth peace of mind and the premiums I pay to know they will be able to get the best treatment... Read More

Best Pet Insurer in the market We have had Healthy Paws for a couple of years for our 5 year old French Bulldog. He has had some minor issues from time to time and it has been easy and convenient to submit claims. Recently he had some breathing issues and he had to go to ER. It was found he had some internal issues and would need surgery or he could potential die from lack of oxygen. We scheduled the surgery and then submitted the invoice and details to Healthy Paws. After a quick review they reimbursed us for the covered portion of the procedure. This saved us thousands of dollars and allowed us to keep our beloved family member safe and healthy for a long time to come. I cannot... Read More

There is no better pet insurance company than Healthy Paws. My pup has had his fair share of ups and downs and Healthy Paws has always been there when we needed them. The staff has always been great, the coverage amazing, and they even take the time to follow up on my golden. I will always recommend and have Healthy Paws for all my pets!

I cannot express enough my gratitude for Healthy Paws. Our family member, Kiwi, a 5 year old Yorkie, had a trachea collapse that worsened to the point where the only thing that would save him would be a tracheal stent placement. Very few hospitals have the ability to do this procedure but we were lucky enough to live somewhat close to one. Kiwi was definitely a candidate and needed this implant to survive. God bless our Healthy Paws pet insurance because the cost is very expensive what with the anesthesia, the stent and the physician, operating room and fluoroscopy costs. All went reasonably well until tissue infiltration necessitated an additional stent placement and continued... Read More

Healthy Paws has exceed our expectation when it came to health insurance for our French bulldog. Our bulldog had a problem with his back and he needed to see a urologist and have an MRI. Healthy paws covered most of the expense and ensured the our pet got the best care possible. They also sent us an email checking to see how he was doing. They care and it shows.

Extremely poor customer service. I was a customer for 10 years. Initially recommended this service to everyone. My coverage started at the equated rates on consumer advocate. However, in the last few years they implemented new policies and increased rates significantly with little to no notification. My rates increase to around $100/month for two dogs to $275/month in last two years. I only kept this coverage because with aging pets I thought it may pay off. However, I had a credit card canceled due to fraud and I ended up two months behind on automatic payments. I did not receive any emails that I was over due, despite the company claiming they sent emails. I received a letter... Read More

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Susan - We understand no one likes any form of premium increase. All premiums are based on the rates and rating rules filed and approved by each state’s Department of Insurance. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care, including specialty and emergency care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. We’re sorry that your card was compromised. A Healthy Paws policy is continuous until either canceled by the policyholder or if there is non-payment of premiums. We understand that there are times a policyholder's credit card used on the policy could be lost, compromised by fraud or that there may be a change in bank accounts, expiration date, etc. When an account goes into suspension due to the fact that we are unable to bill the card on file, we make every effort to keep policyholders up to date and informed about the status of their accounts and any upcoming action/changes. Multiple notices are sent via email, and a Notice of (upcoming) Cancellation is sent out via regular post as well. There is also an automatic grace period that is taken into account. However, at a certain point, and at the end of the grace period, if we do not hear back from the primary account holder (prior to the cancellation effective date) the account must be canceled.  In order to be equitable to all enrolled pet parents, we cannot make any exceptions to this, as that could be considered discriminatory. As you stated in your review, insurance regulations prohibit us from re-instating your policy and a new policy would need to be set up. We're sorry to lose you as a policyholder and hope you and your pet stay well.

HealthyPaws has been such a great service (and value) in taking care of our furry family member. With a reasonable deductible, and great coverage, we have been able to take care of anything that has come up with him without worrying about it. We have the piece of mind of knowing that our guy is going to get the care he needs.
