Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I am so greatful healthy paws helped us out. We have a pekingese /beagle mix and she is the best little girl. Unfortunately this kind of breed can also have back problems and out of no where Lola could not move pee or poop on her own. It was heartbreaking. It was like she was paralyzed out of no where. So the emergency hospital we took her too needed to do a Mri which costs over 1500.00 bucks, of course after her results she needed surgery in her lower lumbar spine. Lola was in the hospital for two days. She is getting stronger everyday but will need some physical therapy and walking on treadmill in water to help connect her legs better. Lola has never cried or made one sound with all... Read More

I cannot recommend Healthy Paws insurance enough. I have had bad luck with my puppy dogs this year and Healthy Paws has been there every step of the way. From a kidney infection with one dog that required hospitalization to knee surgery with another dog and rehab therapy, Healthy Paws covered everything! Not only did they cover all of the medical bills, to make it possible to keep my dogs healthy and happy, their reimbursement timeframe was less than a week. If only my own health insurance could be this outstanding! I highly recommend this insurance company to anyone who has a pet. You never know when you’re going to be hit with an outstanding hospital or emergency room bill and Healthy... Read More

So grateful and thankful for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. We have had this policy since our dog was a puppy and are so thankful Healthy Paws is always there when we need them. We typically meet our deductible most years with our Bernese Mountain Dog, but most recently we had a scare with diarrhea/vomiting/loss of appetite/lethargy and refusal of water. His liver enzymes were > 3000 (normal is < 120). He was hospitalized for 4 nights and had his gallbladder removed. Healthy Paws covered 90% of our bill after meeting our deductible. We couldn’t be more thankful. Not sure what we would do without the insurance. Highly recommend without reservation! Thank you Healthy Paws!

My two year old husky recently started having a multitude of neurological symptoms landing him 2 ER hospital admissions in just a few days.He had X-rays, blood work, medications, head CT, IV fluids ect….it was all inconclusive and recommended he see a neurologist, MRI and spinal tap.MRI confirm Wobbler’s disease with significant spinal cord compression at c2&c3.With bills now totaling over $8000 Healthy Paws already sent me checks covering 90% of my bills.Checks mailed out in just a few weeks after submitting invoices and medical records.Tahoe will need major surgery in order to live a long pain free life.Healthy Paws will make this surgery possible because I don’t have that much money to... When my dog tore his CCL (ACL) at age 3 I was very concerned that we would not be able to afford his surgery and his rehab that would help optimize his recovery. We got Healthy Paws pet insurance when he was a puppy and thankfully that covered everything up to 90% after we met our deductible (met this very quickly with the cost of surgery). Not only did they easily cover the surgery without any push back but they also have been covering his physical therapy. They covered physical therapy both before surgery (water treadmill and laser therapy) to keep him strong before surgery and now they have continued to cover physical therapy after surgery. The surgery was 4700 dollars and they covered... Read More

I am really grateful to Healthy Paws for paying my rescue chihuahua's claims quickly. My rescue baby has been having stomach and dental issues, and Healthy Paws has been great at responding to claims and even checking in on his health status. I'm super happy that I'm using Healthy Paws to cover both of my babies.

I signed up for Healthy Paws when my aussiedoodle was 8 weeks old. She is almost 2 years old and has had several visits to the vet because of her sensitive stomach. I have never had an issue with Healthy Paws not reimbursing for her visits. They do NOT reimburse for exam visits, spay or neuter, or yearly shots but, with my plan, I get 80% back of what they do cover. This last visit to the vet she had was an overnight visit and they even followed up in a sweet email asking how my pup was doing. It’s super easy to file a claim. I just get an itemized statement from her vet, scan it to my computer, upload to Healthy Paws “File a Claim”, and submit. Usually, I see a reimbursement within 72... Read More

First time having health insurance for a pet and so happy we did. Everyone I've talked to has been extremely caring for both myself and our new pup, Luther. At just 5 months, we took Luther to an emergency vet to check on a tummy issue which Healthy Paws helped pay for after a deductible. Soon after that claim was resolved, Luther was hit by a car and taken to the emergency vet again. Healthy Paws was able to help pay up to 80% of it as per our health insurance and also checked in on how Luther was doing after the claim had already gone through. Truly great customer service and we will be continuing using their health insurance. Thank you for thinking of Luther!

Healthy Paws is an amazing pet insurance company. My dog has severe allergies and they have covered all of her treatments, plus they were incredible about covering the two emergency rooms visits she's had. I didn't have to worry about paying for her care, because I knew they would help me - quickly and efficiently. I've never had to argue about coverage and my reimbursement checks come immediately. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend them to everyone!!
