Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Without this insurance i would have had to put my 2 year old dog down after he ate part of his blanket and required emergency surgery costing more than $5,000. Healthy Paws insurance covered it without question and even contacted me asking how my dog was doing. Honest company who provides the service they say they do! My rate over 2 years has increased less than 10% . This same dog also has severe allergies and they covered that as well. A REAL lifesaver.

Healthy Paws has been amazing for our family. Whenever one of our pets has had an issue - from our cat with cancer to our dog that needed knee surgery -- Healthy Paws has been right there with us, covering 90% of the costs of treatment. Submitting claims is incredibly easy, and we have always been reimbursed quickly. I recommend Healthy Paws to everyone.

My dog has had coverage under a Healthy Paws policy since 2011. Because she was a rescue and had experienced a lot of neglect, we were concerned that she might have some medical issues eventually, so we took out a policy for her right away. In the last 6 years, our dog has benefited from a life-saving diagnosis and two major surgical procedures, all with support from our Healthy Paws policy. Healthy Paws has been simply outstanding. Their online claims filing process is very easy to use and claims are reviewed quickly. My most recent claim was expedited, at the offer of the helpful claims representative, when I let her know I was concerned about receiving the funds in time to pay the... Read More

We purchase insurance and hope we never have to use it but when we do we expect the claims process to be quick and painless. Healthypaws Pet Insurance has exceeded all my expectations. Their customer services was 1st class and their claims process was extremely quick and easy. This being my first claim (hopefully last), they helped me through the claims process which allowed for a quick reimbursement of my vet expenses. If you want world class service, I highly recommend Healthypaws Insurance.

I would strongly recommend Healthy Paws. This was my first time getting a puppy and insurance and I could not be more happy with my choice. Healthy Paws customer service is unparrallel. In my experience, I would call before service hours and get a phone call ten minutes after they open. It was quick and easy filing my claim I did not fax just email or through the app and they would receive my information.

Healthy Paws' coverage is very satisfactory but its customer service is not. It provides email, fax number, and post office box address on its claim forms as methods for claim submissions--with no explanation that one may be faster than any other. I don't have a fax machine or a scanner in my home so I first mailed my claim forms. And then waited and waited and heard nothing. So I called. Customer Service said they had not received my claims, that the mail can be really slow. Two weeks slow?? No way. Though they wouldn't admit it, seems HP checks its p.o. box maybe once a month if that. I asked my vet to fax my forms and HP received them and processed them quickly. I faxed my next claims... Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Susan, We’re sorry that your customer service experience do not meet yours or our expectations. We check our PO Box multiple times a week, but between the volume of mail and time to scan into our system, it can take longer than an email or fax to get attached to you account. To meet the demands of our clients and vet hospitals, we do use multiple fax numbers if issues arise with one of them. That was why our customer care team member asked if you knew which number was used. With the volume of faxes we receive, it can take a week (not 2 weeks) to get that information attached to your account when our fax volume is high. As our team member suggested, our phone app will attach the appropriate information directly to your Healthy Paws account. We understand phone storage may be at a minimum, so our app is small compared to others and you can always un-install the app/re-install whenever you need it.

We have both our French bulldogs insured with Healthy Paws. The app makes it so easy to file claims on your phone, and you can even sign up for direct deposit. One of our dogs recently had to have major surgery - Healthy Paws not only paid our claim quickly, but the followed up to see how our pup was recovering. I wish my insurance company was as kind and courteous!

Healthy Paws insurance is affordable and has excellent coverage. I would never dream of not having my pet insured anymore. It is such great peace of mind knowing I will never have to make a decision for my fur babies based solely on finances... thank you!
