Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Our experience with Healthy Paws has been exceptional and seamless. While we never want to avail ourselves of its benefits as it means one of our pets is sick, Healthy Paws has always been quick to reimburse our costs and to follow up about our pet's recovery. We absolutely wish human health insurance was as well run. I rave about it to all of my friends who have pets or are thinking about getting a pet. They've been happy as well.

I love the peace of mind that comes with having our lil princess covered with healthy paws pet insurance. Our dog Snickers is like one of our children, and the coverage we have allows us to provide her with the best medical care. The claim process is easy, reimbursement is fast, and anytime I have needed to contact customer service they have been wonderful. So happy we found them.

I LOVE healthy paws. Their monthly premiums are competitive with other plans, their claims department pays very quickly and I even got a personal email checking on my dogs recovery from a recent illness. I like the fact that I am responsible to pay for my dogs standard preventive care and the insurance only covers unexpected costs. That makes me responsible for the day to day costs while giving me the peace of mind that if something unexpected occurs, I have the coverage I need. Now I know why Healthy Paws has such a great rating. I recommend using them.

Excellent Service from beginning to end process. You made me feel so comforted that everything would be taken care of for Dolly's surgery. And, you even asked how my Dolly was doing after the surgery. I really appreciated your concern. She is doing as well as possible with a least 3 months more of recouperation. Having a sick pet can be emotionally and financially exhausting. Getting pet insurance was the smartest move I ever made, and going with Healthy Paws was my best choice. After quite a bit of shopping around, I felt that Healthy Paws had the best plan for my new puppy. This is the absolute BEST pet insurance out there! I can’t thank Healthy Paws enough for their kindness through my dog’s emergency surgery. My Golden Retriever (just over a year old), had to have a foreign body surgery because she ate something that she was not supposed to. Not only was this terrifying, but I knew that bills would add up quickly. I wanted the best care for my dog, at the emergency vet that I chose, and any treatment/procedure that she needed done, done. I love Healthy Paws, and I recommend them to everyone I know who has pets. Submitting claims is super simple (you just take a picture of the vet invoice with your phone), and they usually approve claims very quickly. I had one claim that was approved about 15 minutes after I submitted it. In my experience, they pay for everything that they say they will. Recently my cat was suddenly diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening condition and the vet recommended major surgery that would cost thousands of dollars. Surprisingly in a world where insurance companies try not to pay out, Healthy Paws paid every penny due to us in a timely manner. The process online is simple to submit a claim and you can check the status online too. We got our checks within a month of submitting our claims. Very easy to work with and great service.

I have had healthy paws insurance for my dog Bustelo since I adopted him, with the hope of never having to use it. He got into some pills and had to be hospitalized. The people at healthy paws were all very friendly and helpful. They were quick to answer any questions I had when I called their customer support and were always very kind and considerate. They even reached out through email to check on him. I cannot say enough good things about them; and have been telling everyone I know with a pet how good they are.

Healthpaws has been available on the phone to answer my questions in a time of crisis. They have followed up with emails to check on my pet. They also reimbursed me very quickly which was so helpful as not to be in a bind when the credit card bills came through.
