Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthpaws has been available on the phone to answer my questions in a time of crisis. They have followed up with emails to check on my pet. They also reimbursed me very quickly which was so helpful as not to be in a bind when the credit card bills came through. It was amazing to experience the healthypaws team service and know that I can count on them. Thanks again!

I have had my two canine fur babies, a Newfoundland and a Pyrenees mix, both rescues, with Healthy Paws for about five years and I trust this company completely. They cover exactly what they say they will, process claims very quickly, and have been incredibly courteous and helpful over the phone every time I have called (so much better than calling a human insurance company!). I don't write reviews on line often, but this is one company that cares about animals the way pet owners do and they deserve high acclaim. If you don't have any pet insurance, this is the company to sign up with as soon as you bring your pet home.

Nothing but good things to say about Healthy Paws! Our little pup has been through it all in her 2yrs of life and Healthy Paws has been there every step of the way! They generally care about your pups health, and make the process of submitting a claim, processing a claim or just asking general questions, very easy and stress free! I highly recommend their services!!

Our dog had to go in for surgery to remove some cancer spots. As soon as we received the bill, we uploaded it into the system and, within a week, Healthy Paws had processed the claim and sent us a check. There were no questions asked, except for how our pup was recovering :)

Cancer, Ear infections, Allergies, Medications and the latest one was a total Ear Ablation that was almost $4000.00 and we received 90% back. I am so thankful that I have them!

So thankful I went with this insurance. I have a $100 deductible and 90% reimbursement for $40/mo. Our 2 year old LabPit tore both CCLs and Healthy Paws was incredible through the surgical process. They were prompt and had the kindest customer service employees (yes, real ppl not a recording)! I had my reimbursement in my account less than two weeks after surgery. They emailed us to check on Piper after her surgery to check on her. Their app in incredibly functional and I submitted all claims in literally 30 seconds from my phone. HIGHLY suggest.

Healthy Paws is simple to use, caring, and so helpful! When my pup got sick recently, they were there to help me cover her vet bills, and made it incredibly easy for me to send in claims. They are so easy to use & understand. And they truly care about your pet - they contacted me specifically to ask how she was doing - so awesome!

I couldn't be happier with Healthy Paws. My 1 year old cat swallowed a needle and thread which got stuck in his intestines. He needed emergency surgery estimated between 4K-6k. Having insurance for him gave me the peace of mind that I could afford the procedure he needed. The mobile app was extremely easy to use to submit my claim. The staff was helpful and professional over the phone. I received reimbursement promptly. It was a seamless process. I am very grateful.

We are SO grateful we have Healthy Paws insurance for our one year old lab. We signed up for the insurance in July, and by October, needed their services. Our dog had swallowed part of a rope toy that badly damaged her intestines. We were looking at emergency surgery that was estimated to be between $10K-$20K. I cannot image how difficult the decision would have been if we didn't have insurance. She made it through surgery and is doing very well now. We submitted all our paperwork easily online, and within 10 days, our claim was approved! They paid 80% of the expenses and were very fast. We cannot recommend Healthy Paws enough! It was a huge weight lifted off our shoulders where... Read More

Oh my God! Where should I start? If I did not have healthy paws as my insurance company my five month old German Shepherd probably wouldn't be alive more than a year. I got healthy Paws based on the reviews and the internet because my veterinarian did not have any brochures about them. They had it about other animal insurance companies. So I did research and did the math and chose healthy Paws Insurance. They were easy and very convenient to not only get my check to get surgery for my german shepherd who needed heart surgery but throughout the whole claim. I've received nothing but professionalism and kindness and concern even after her surgery. Can you believe that they actually emailed... Read More
