Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have two rescues. Scrappy we adopted in 2013, he was 1 and a half, and Baloo we adopted in 2014 and was between 2-5yrs old. Scrappy ended up testing heartworm positive in December 2013, despite having a clean bill of health from the rescue and being on heartworm prevention since we adopted him. Baloo is not an extremely sporty dog, but my Scrappy chases him around for 8hrs a day to make sure he gets tons of exercise. We recently noticed him limping, after x-rays and an exam that he needed to be sedated to have done, he was diagnosed with a torn CCL. My puppy had to be rushed to the emergency vet due to ingesting something toxic. After a gastrointestinal surgery and 48 hour stint in the hospital, we were worried to see the total bill. We knew we had accident insurance but weren't positive on what would be covered considering the experiences we have had in the past with insurance companies. We submitted the claim on a Sunday via the healthy paws app and heard back immediately that they were processing the claim. We recently went through two back-to-back emergency surgeries with our young puppy and Healthy Paws was not only highly responsive with our claim, they followed up personally to make sure she was doing ok in her recovery. The Healthy Paws app made it easy for me to snap a picture of our vet bills, click 'submit claim', and initiate the process right from my phone. Once submitted, I received an email right away telling me our claim was being reviewed and another only a few days later detailing the amount we would be reimbursed based on our plan - no hassles, no questions asked. Healthy Paws! You all need to know the sense of both relief and confidence you have infused into our decision to have our Choc Lab Duke, protected by Healthy Paws. He started favoring his right leg at about 6 months old after exercise or play times. Unfortunately like other large breeds, it was confirmed Elbow Dysplasia after x-rays and then seeing a Specialist. We thought we were going to be "poop" out of luck staring at an enormous bill. We enrolled our sweet mini schnauzer in Healthy Paws soon after she joyed our family. In October 2016 Ellie was diagnosed with diabetes and within 8 months cataracts. We were so frightened and worried about our little girl. With Healthy Paws protection the one thing we didn't have to worry about was that Ellie would receive the best care. She has and with the compassionate support of Healthy Paws, her sight has been restored and she is doing well. Ellie is only turning 8 and will need lifelong care and it is incredibly comforting to know Healthy Paws will be right with us. I can not thank them enough.

I have come to realize that if you own a dog, you need pet insurance. This is my experience with Healthy paws. I purchased pet insurance with Healthy Paws when I adopted my five year old Mini Schnauzer. After many years of perfect health he came down with various diseases: pancreatitis, a heart condition, pneumonia, a "vascular event" which I interpret as a stroke, cataracts, and diabetes. These resulted in several multi-day stays in ICU, cataract surgery to regain his vision, and many procedures. He is on several expensive maintenance medications. My three year old dog got horribly sick suddenly and I had to take him to the ICU and have him stay for 36 hours. The costs were oppressive--they had to run tons of tests and then stick him with an IV and pump him full of expensive drugs. Healthy Paws came through for me like a champion. They covered 80% of all the fees as promised and did it at a record speed. Within four days of my dog coming home, I already received payment. They are also just really wonderful and caring people.

Amazing company!! They paid very quickly with no questions asked for my French bulldogs emergency back surgery and more concerned about his health and never questioned any of the cost! They understand the hardship having to put out thousands of dollars for surgery and repaid me quickly and followed up with me to make sure that my dog was doing OK and we were being taken care of. Highly recommend them
