How Do We Rate Healthy Paws?

Extras

Our Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I cannot express enough my gratitude for Healthy Paws. Our family member, Kiwi, a 5 year old Yorkie, had a trachea collapse that worsened to the point where the only thing that would save him would be a tracheal stent placement. Very few hospitals have the ability to do this procedure but we were lucky enough to live somewhat close to one. Kiwi was definitely a candidate and needed this implant to survive. God bless our Healthy Paws pet insurance because the cost is very expensive what with the anesthesia, the stent and the physician, operating room and fluoroscopy costs. All went reasonably well until tissue infiltration necessitated an additional stent placement and continued... Read More

Healthy Paws has exceed our expectation when it came to health insurance for our French bulldog. Our bulldog had a problem with his back and he needed to see a urologist and have an MRI. Healthy paws covered most of the expense and ensured the our pet got the best care possible. They also sent us an email checking to see how he was doing. They care and it shows.

Extremely poor customer service. I was a customer for 10 years. Initially recommended this service to everyone. My coverage started at the equated rates on consumer advocate. However, in the last few years they implemented new policies and increased rates significantly with little to no notification. My rates increase to around $100/month for two dogs to $275/month in last two years. I only kept this coverage because with aging pets I thought it may pay off. However, I had a credit card canceled due to fraud and I ended up two months behind on automatic payments. I did not receive any emails that I was over due, despite the company claiming they sent emails. I received a letter... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Susan - We understand no one likes any form of premium increase. All premiums are based on the rates and rating rules filed and approved by each state’s Department of Insurance. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care, including specialty and emergency care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. We’re sorry that your card was compromised. A Healthy Paws policy is continuous until either canceled by the policyholder or if there is non-payment of premiums. We understand that there are times a policyholder's credit card used on the policy could be lost, compromised by fraud or that there may be a change in bank accounts, expiration date, etc. When an account goes into suspension due to the fact that we are unable to bill the card on file, we make every effort to keep policyholders up to date and informed about the status of their accounts and any upcoming action/changes. Multiple notices are sent via email, and a Notice of (upcoming) Cancellation is sent out via regular post as well. There is also an automatic grace period that is taken into account. However, at a certain point, and at the end of the grace period, if we do not hear back from the primary account holder (prior to the cancellation effective date) the account must be canceled.  In order to be equitable to all enrolled pet parents, we cannot make any exceptions to this, as that could be considered discriminatory. As you stated in your review, insurance regulations prohibit us from re-instating your policy and a new policy would need to be set up. We're sorry to lose you as a policyholder and hope you and your pet stay well.

HealthyPaws has been such a great service (and value) in taking care of our furry family member. With a reasonable deductible, and great coverage, we have been able to take care of anything that has come up with him without worrying about it. We have the piece of mind of knowing that our guy is going to get the care he needs.

We've had Healthy Paws nearly five years now and we could not be happier with the service and benefits. Filing claims is incredibly easy and they are processed very quickly. We recently had to bring our pup to the emergency vet twice in one weekend and because of Healthy Paws, we didn't hesitate to not only bring him in, but also to move forward with all of the testing the vet recommended. Having Healthy Paws insurance gives us that comfort that we can take care of our pup regardless of what happens. They also checked in with us to see how he was doing--I've never experienced this with any type of insurance!!

I learned about Healthy Paws from a friend. I started coverage with my puppy early. They have been really helpful with two majors surgeries. They are fast and provide easy explanations of coverage. I recommend them for sure!

Open letter to Rob Jackson (Co-Founder & CEO at Healthy Paws) Dear Mr. Jackson, “Ok ma’aam, give Lilly, Maggie, and Roary cuddles from us. Have a good day.” That’s what one of your customer service reps said to me last Friday. On the surface, this is a wonderful sentiment to receive. Less wonderful when it is followed by that person hanging up on the customer. But that story is for later. I have often wondered if you are a pet owner? I imagine, given that you are the CEO and co-founder of a pet insurance company, that you are. But what kind of pet owner are you? Pet insurance is becoming a bit more mainstream and less niche then it was 8 years ago, when I chooses you as... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
hug618 - We're sorry that your buddy needs major hip surgery. During calls to our representatives, you were advised that pre-approvals for claims are not permitted as claims are processed on a reimbursement basis. Without receiving and reviewing all pertinent medical records for this issue (including the ones from the upcoming procedure itself) we cannot assure coverage with 100% certainty. While we do not offer pre-approvals, we do offer Direct Pay as our customer care team spoke of during their recent phone call with you. Occasionally for unexpected, large, or special circumstance claims, we are able to pay the hospital directly for our portion of the claim (this would require a review of any new/pertinent medical records along with a copy of the proposed estimate for treatment). This review would be performed prior to the procedure. Once reviewed (and if your clinic is willing to work with us) we will let you know with certainty if the hip dysplasia and procedure would be eligible for coverage or not. If it is eligible, you can then schedule the procedure. Afterward, you will submit a copy of the finalized invoice for review and processing. We would then call the clinic to make a payment over the phone (same day via credit card, or we can expedite a check) for our covered portion of the claim as per your reimbursement/deductible elections for your pet. This solution assures you beforehand that the procedure is either eligible for coverage or not, and avoids any undue strain on your finances. Customer service to our pet parents is paramount and we're sorry for any frustration during your interaction with our team. Your phone calls were reviewed by our management team based on the statements in your review. It was discovered that after the Customer Liaison Manager re-iterated that Healthy Paws was unable to permit pre-approvals, and the option of a direct payment was not of interest, the call had become unproductive, and the manager ended the call in a professional manner.

Healthy Paws is an awesome pet insurance company. My dog had a diaphragmatic hernia which resulted in a lung log being removed. Surgery, ongoing treatment and medication resulted in medical bills totaling over $20,000. Without Healthy Paws I could not have been able to afford treatment and my pet companion would have been put to sleep. My pet is still fighting to get after surgery conditions under control and I know Healthy Paws is there to help him in his struggle to survive.

When I first got my dog, we were with another insurance company and it was a hassle in terms of getting claims to them and even more so for reimbursement. We switched to Healthy Paws in 2013, and they have been really amazing. Great customer service reps and an easy to use app and website, can upload invoices from your phone and quick to reimburse. The no lifetime limit is also a big one for me, as my dog is older and I don't want to be stressing about vet bills if it means saving his life or making him more comfortable. He's recently had fairly major surgery for a dog his age and knowing that we reached our deductible and will be covered at 70% took much of the financial strain off my... Read More

I used to highly recommend Healthy Paws (5 stars). We had their coverage for our dog for almost 9 years and never had any issues. They were wonderful. However, two years later, we purchased coverage for our new, rescued cat. And, it is now like we're dealing with a completely different company, which is totally inept and clueless about how to run their company. They lose the documents we send. They can't read (evidence from responses that have nothing to do with the communication we sent to them). I feel like I'm talking to the wall. They also say that they won't cover a pre-existing condition, of which they have no information on which to base that claim... again, I guess that is more... Read More

seawater5000 - We’re sorry that you were not satisfied with your plan or the recent customer service you experienced. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the plan documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our plan. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. Unfortunately, we could not cover your pet’s claims since they fell into one of the previously mentioned limited exclusions or during your policy’s fifteen day waiting period. Healthy Paws is very transparent about our waiting period on our website, in the plan documents that are in each client’s online account and during the enrollment process. We’re sorry to lose you as a policyholder and hope you and your kitty stay well.
