Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We have been Healthy Paws Insurance member since 2015, we have not had any bad experience with them. About 3 weeks ago our dog got diagnosed with hip dysplasia and needed to get surgery right away. We were so worried since we know this option is not cheap, and wonder what kind of long process it would take. Started to make phone call to their customer service right away after spoke to the surgeon. Let me tell you how amazing their customer service is. They are so hopeful, telling us to send them the doctor's note for their review. We submitted the document on January 10 2017. By January 12 2017, all the process was done and we were on the phone with the hospital to schedule the surgery.... Read More

Our three year dog tore a ligament in her knee, causing her constant pain. We could no longer take her on walks or do any running activities. The surgery was 4600$. Thank goodness for Healthy Paws insurance! They covered her surgery at 80%. This is the second time this year we relied on this insurance and they are friendly, helpful, and prompt with reimbursement. Highly recommended!

I have nothing but positive things to say about Healthy Paws as they have done nothing but safeguard our beloved dog and make it possible for her to receive the best possible care. It was only two months after adopting our rescue dog, LUNA, that she came down with a virus/pneumonia -- resulting in a four day stay in the emergency room. It cost me close to 3 grand, out of pocket. It was then that I began looking for pet insurance. I'm not sure if Healthy Paws was a recommendation or not, but I definitely appreciated the flexibility to decide how much to pay monthly versus deductible versus coverage threshold. I have a "grand dog" named Bella that is 6 years old and have never thought about purchasing Pet Insurance for her. 2 of my friends dogs were in her backyard and were bit by a snake creating a lot of medical expense at an Emergency Clinic. I then decided to seek the best option for Pet Insurance for Bella and chose Healthy Paws which was the best decision I have ever made. This was in 2015 and Bella had to have surgery on her back leg last year (with PT for 8 weeks) and again on both legs this year. This is the first time in my life I have ever had to deal with pet surgery and it is very stressful situation. I am so grateful for our Healthy Paws Pet insurance policy that I started the adoption - this is my daughter's cat and they adore each other - so having this insurance meant I didn't have to make a really ugly decision between putting him down or credit card debt. They have been supportive, prompt with claims processing - no grief or we need more information. I highly recommend them if you are looking for the best policy for your pets.

Definitely would not recommend Healthy Paws. The customer service was beyond awful. They canceled my pets policy claiming a payment did not go through which I did not find out until I was investigating a claim i'd placed. No one reached out to me to correct the error and now they are requiring that my dog be placed back on a 15 day waiting period although they are reading her policy over the phone and verbalized that she does not have a preexisting condition. If you care so much about the health of your clients loved animals you should show that instead of just collecting money like all other insurance institutions. Awful. Healthy Paws is the best! My dog had an unexpected digestion problem that caused bloody puddles on the floor. I immediately took her to the vet. She had to spend the night at the pet hospital. I submitted a claim for my dog via their website and it was immediately processed. I was reimbursed 90% of the vet and pet hospital fees within 10 days. The reimbursement amount depends on what you select. I also received an email from Tim Weiss to see how my dog was doing. I highly recommend Healthy Paws for your pet's needs. My husband is glad I talked him into getting the insurance.

I purchased Healthy Paws insurance a couple of years ago for my young Labrador. He was so wild I thought he was an accident waiting to happen! He hasn't had any accidents but he has had some ear infections and most recently a growth removed from his rear hock. I submit my claims and they are paid within a week. Their customer service is very helpful and friendly. After Willie's surgery they even sent me emails to see how he was doing. So far I've been very pleased with the company and it's processes as a whole. I couldn't be happier with their coverage.

We researched many other companies before choosing Healthy Paws. We have only had 1 experience so far, but we could not be more pleased. Our claim was taken care of quickly and professionally. They not only took care of the administrative issues promptly, but checked on our pet periodically after her procedure. They seem truly concerned with the care of your pet.

Snickers had two claims in one year. They covered 90% minus the deductible and dr exam as expected. Love this insurance. Minor raise in premium this next year. I don't worry when or if she gets sick. Thanks healthy paws.
