Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I had Healthy Paws for my old dog, but I couldn't benefit from it much because they don't cover vet exam fees. About the time I would pay all my deductible and start finally getting reimbursements, it would already be reset and go back to point zero. After paying high monthly premiums without feeling much helped from it, I requested cancellation of my policy. Then they sent me an email persuading me to stay, which also said I needed to click a link and follow up to complete my cancellation process. I was actualy indeed persuaded, so I just left it without following it up. About a month later, I found out that they not only cancelled my plan but also wouldn't let me keep my dog's original... Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Yunjin - We make every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit (vet exam or consultation) part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. In regards to your claims, they were covered by your policy according to the annual deductible and reimbursement level you chose at enrollment. As with any policy that includes an annual deductible, the deductible has to be met before any reimbursements are made. Since these claims included exam fees and you had a lower reimbursement percentage, that would impact the amount of reimbursement. In regards to the cancelation of your policy, we are legally obligated by insurance regulations to cancel a policy upon receiving written request to do so from a client - that is all we require to cancel a policy. The email we sent after receiving your cancelation email is our way to try and raise awareness of the importance/benefits of our policy. When there was no response from you to that email, we sent another email 2 days later which included your policy cancellation notice. We would have had no issue in restoring your policy if there had been any type of response to either of our emails. We’re sorry to lose you as a client and hope you and your pet stay well!

Healthy Paws has been amazing!!! If it wasn't for them I don't know what I would have done, I hate to think about what I would have had to do because there is NO way I'd be able to afford the outrageous vet/hospital/specialist/prescription bills I've had for my Clifford. Getting this insurance when I adopted him was the best thing I ever did, I did it knowing that Cavaliers are known to get heart problems. Little did I know that at the young age of 3, only 10 months after I got him that he would get a very serious heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy. He's also recently had a bad pancreatitis attack that landed him over a week stay in the emergency ICU. Submitting claims and... Read More

I joined Healthy Paws after thoroughly reviewing the available options. The coverage, relatively low monthly fees, and high reviews stood out. I have been using Healthy Paws now for over a year and I would highly recommend this pet insurance. Recently my dog had to be rushed into surgery after an ultrasound revealed a foreign body in her small intestine. Within 48 hours of submitting my reimbursement, Healthy Paws reviewed and approved my claim. It was such a relief knowing that I have Healthy Paws to cover unexpected and emergent health issues.

Health Paws coverage is fair... truly taking risk out of pet ownership. They are clear about their coverage and adjudicate claims based on that coverage in a fast, straight-forward manner. I have had the great fortune of having an amazing dog. I have also had the great mis-fortune in my dog having chronic allergies and most recently being hit by a car. Healthy Paws has been there for me all the way. I'm sure I'm a money loser for them, but I've never felt that way. I am promoting them as 5 stars all the way with the hope that this attracts some new sales for some healthy and accident-free pets to offset me and others who have needed to make exceptional claims. You'll be happy... Read More

I've been a Healthy Paws customer for a while now, but over the holidays submitted my first claim -- In general, their customer support has always been great, but in the time of crisis with one of my animals, Healthy Paws made the process easier than the vet's office did. I was able to submit my claim via the mobile app without any trouble, and all my home vet had to do was send a quick email. After the claim was submitted, the process was so incredibly easy - customer service was on top of everything, notified me when documents were received, and when they were beginning to process the claim. The turn around on everything was just as smooth, and they got me a itemized sheet of my... Read More

Since I took out insurance for my girl Raven, I have needed to file claims on several occasions. Healthy Paws, makes the process so easy. I just send my bill via the online site and my claim is taken care of quickly and before you know it I'm receiving my check in the mail for reimbursement. They are a great pet insurance company. I'm so happy I took out an insurance policy with Healthy Paws... It's a comfort to know My girl is taken care of.

We had just enrolled our 2yr old mini American Eskimo, Thor, in healthpaws a few months earlier and then he got horribly ill. He got a severe GI infection and had to stay in the hospital for weeks. I was worried that it may not be covered but all we had to do was send Thor's full health record with the claim and we had no issues! It was very scary for a couple weeks and he lost over 10% of his body weight; we were unsure which way it would go. I can say it was a relief to have insurance otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford the badly needed IV fluids, medications and lab tests. I can say with a fair degree of certainty that having healthy paws on our side is what enabled Thor... Read More

My puppy destroyed a plastic Christmas wreath and unbeknownst to me ate some of the plastic. I had to rush him to hospital for emergency treatment. Of course my concern was my pup but having to pay thousands up front is unnerving. Knowing I had healthy paws insurance took the worry away. As soon as I'd submitted the claim I had kind emails inquiring into Welly's health and helping me with my claim. Hours later the claim had been processed and the check was in the mail. The process was seamless and took the stress out of a very stressful circumstance! Thanks, Healthy Paws!

This is the best insurance company I have ever worked with. Hands down, better than my homeowners, auto, or human health coverage! I have paid tens of thousands in medical bills over the years for my many pets but never purchased pet insurance. I finally decided to make the commitment for my newly adopted, rambunctious 3 year old border collie, Smokey. About 6 months after I got the insurance, Smokey got loose and got hit by a car. This company was amazing. The vet hospital and neurologist's bills were huge. It was really easy to submit the claim for each invoice online and much to my relief, reimbursement checks were always sent by Healthy Paws in just 1 to 2 weeks, no questions asked.... Read More
