Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We've been a "Healthy Paws" customer for about three years. We have four dogs insured. There have been several occasions we've had to file claims for our dogs and we've always been taken care of promptly. We've never disagreed with Healthy Paws reimbursement of any of our claims. The latest claim has totaled close to $6,000 . Our reimbursement for these claims were all handled within a couple of days and reimbursed to policy agreements of close to $5,000 in checks back to us. One of our smallest dogs was seem by our primary care vet with recommendations for further diagnostic tests, including ultrasound. He was admitted to our local emergency hospital, discharged and transferred on to NC... Read More

Healthy Paws has been great. We have a young rescue dog and she recently had a very complex (and expensive) knee surgery. Healthy Paws paid the claim in under a week. I have never had any issue with a submitted claim, and when I have reached out to them for clarification, they have always responded right away.

Our dog got a fever that wouldn't go away and she quickly ended up in the emergency room overnight several times and had half a dozen tests performed totaling over $3,000. Not only did Healthy Paws make good on their insurance promise of 80% coverage after a small deductible of $250, they pre-approved us during the whole ordeal so we didn't have to pay the entire total up front. My vet just contacted Healthy Paws and they paid 80% directly. Several days after, as our dog finally got better on antibiotics, a Healthy Paws representative personally contacted us to see how our dog was doing. It was good customer service and good business.

I have both my Frenchies insured with Healthy Paws and I wouldn't change that for anything! I've unfortunately had quite a few claims and HP reviews them quickly and I have a check in my hands within 2 weeks. It's utterly amazing. I just take a picture of the invoice with my phone and upload it on their app. No claim forms and zero hassle. It's amazing. There is NO other pet insurance that compares. Period. Thank you Healthy Paws Pet Insurance! A++++++++

Recently my dog suffered a compressed disc while playing with his buddy. After a month of intense down time prescribed by his neurologist he suffered complications with a stagnate GI track.Through all the x-rays, MRI, hospitalization and IV medication, Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has been reliable and timely in processing his claims. I usually receive a reimbursement check within 7 days of submitting a claim. In fact a claim I submitted the Sunday after Thanksgiving was processed that very day and the reimbursement check arrived three days later. It is stressful enough to have an injured/sick pet without worrying how to pay the vet bills. Healthy Paws has enabled me to seek the best care... Read More

We are thrilled with Caitlin's Healthypaws insurance. She is just 2 years old but has already had major surgery and an illness requiring ICU admission. The bills would have incapacitated us but with the low deductible and high percentage of payment from Healthypaws, our share was small compared to the total cost. I think the smartest thing we ever did (besides adopting Caitlin) was insuring her at Healthypaws!

Excellent service! My furbaby Ziggy had surgery to repair a torn ACL. I filed with Healthy Paws and a couple of days later they asked for his regular vet's records. Unfortunately by then I was out of town and didn't reply as promptly as I should have. But not to worry! Healthy Paws contacted the vet and got the required documents. Next thing I knew, I got an email telling me that all was taken care of and that I would receive a check! Yay! I totally recommend Healthy Paws.

I cannot recommend Healthy Paws highly enough. I adopted a dog and due to Vet miscommunication I didn't get a proper check up done on pick up (even tho at the time they said it was enough to use for insurance purposes, later they said it wasnt). So a month later my dog was diagnosed with a serious leg issue and I didn,t have the correct pre insurance exam paperwork. So Insurance wouldn't pay right? Wrong. Healthy Paws worked so hard with me to help, and ended up accepting my dog's adoption paperwork in lieu of the correct exam. And I'm not talking inconsequential sums here, I was so impressed by their absolute determination to help. I found them so helpful and the proper human face of... Read More

It was traumatic enough to find my furkid had osteosarcoma. I didn't need added stress of fighting with the insurance company. (which I frequently did with a previous company). Healthy Paws had an incredibly fast turn around so that I was able to bank the money before the payment was due. And they covered exactly what they said they would. There was no guessing what I would get back (again unlike the previous company I had). And they even asked how my little girl was doing several days after the claim was complete. Just about all the greyhound owners on the bulletin board I belong to are HP clients. Hands down this is the favorite company amongst the dog owners of this group.
