Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

My pup, Harley, needed TPLO surgery in June (at the time I did not have insurance)... I would do anything for him so I paid thousands out of pocket for the procedure. That week, I was told about 'Healthy Paws' and I read about them and signed up right away. Just three short months later, Harley fell paralyzed: I was told he needed immediate hospitalization, an MRI, spine surgery, etc. As soon as I left the vet hospital I called to see what coverage I had; everyone I spoke to was genuine, concerned, and so helpful! I was assured that I had coverage for all that was needed (besides my deductible and 10% of total which my policy states) Thanks to that, Harley could have the surgery and is... Read More

I am so glad that I chose Healthy Paws for my kitties health insurance company. They have GREAT customer service. The people I speak with show compassion and concern for my kitties and their healthcare. Their rates are very reasonable. I initially went with another company and they doubled the rates of my 3 cats and my mom's dog after 1 year. Healthy Paws, if and when they do increase their rates, is by a couple of dollars. When I submit a claim I am reimbursed within a week. They also go above and beyond by giving back to help homeless pets. They are more than just an insurance company. They care deeply for and have a compassion for animals. I tell everyone I meet that has an animal:... Read More

Healthy Paws has been an awesome insurance company and I am very grateful to have them. After spending a little over a week reviewing pet insurance companies in depth, I choose Healthy Paws because I felt that they offered the services I really wanted to find, for example, no lifetime limits per pet, no limits per claim or per year, they cover hereditary and congenital conditions. These are some of the very important things I was looking at that quite a few other insurances would not provide. For what they do offer, the pricing is very affordable, I insure three (3) dogs with them. But their customer service has been outstanding. Just recently in mid Oct 2016, one of my dogs had a severe... Read More

I did a lot of research before purchasing this policy for my puppy, Lexie and Healthy Paws had the best coverage for what I was looking for. I had a sheltie (Tara) before Lexie and when Tara developed cancer, I wanted to be able to give her the best care possible- which I did and she lived 4 more happy years. But the cost of that care was overwhelming. When I got Lexie, I knew that I wanted to give her the same great care when the time came, and that was the main reason that I purchased Healthy Paws insurance. I never thought that, even before Lexie was 2 years old, she would be attacked by two vicious dogs, suffering very serious injuries. Thank goodness for Healthy Paws- my little... Read More

Healthy Paws is incredible. I cannot say enough good things about this company. You could not make a better choice for health insurance for your pet. They are professional, make it easy for you to file and process a claim either on line or via an app on your phone, and reimburse you very quickly. My dog has had several surgeries due to intestinal problems. Without healthy paws backing me up I would of had to put her down. Their coverage has been worth every penny.

Healthy Paws is amazing! My baby girl (2 year old American bulldog) tore her CCL and needed surgery. We didn't hesitate to schedule the appointment because we knew we were covered. When I received the bill and filed my claim, healthy paws reviewed it and reimbursed the check was in the mail within days. Their claims department even followed up on my girl's recovery and wanted to know how she was doing. Obviously my family cares for my baby but it was a feeling to know that our insurance cared also. I wasn't expecting the nice email and lovely words from their staff but it meant a great deal to us. I have been with healthy paws for almost two years and I wouldn't change a thing, they have... I would highly recommend Healthy Paws to anyone who might be looking for health insurance for their pet. They were there when our dog Maya needed ACL surgery and paid 90℅ of the almost $4,000.00 vet bill. They have been really good to us.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance saved our dog's life. My wife though I was being overly cautious suggesting that we purchase pet insurance 3 years ago when we adopted our beloved collie mutt, Fox. Last week, however, she told me it was on of the best decisions I'd ever talked her into. Our normally healthy 3 1/2 year old pup suddenly started having difficulty breathing about a week and a half ago, and we noticed that her heart was beating rapidly. We brought her to the emergency vet, who diagnosed her with a spontaneous pneumothorax (a collapsed lung, life threatening), caused by a pulmonary bleb. Totally random and unpreventable, and likely to recur without surgery. The most shocking part... Read More

Our dog Zayn recently needed exploratory surgery after being sick for a few days and not being able to hold down food or water. Of course a piece of toy was found lodged in his stomach. Knowing we had Healthy Paws on our side to help with the bill for his surgery was one less thing we had to worry about. Our claim was submitted just days after the surgery and we had a reimbursement check a week later. We had an insurance plan for our other dog with Trupanion and were denied a claim because of a "pre-existing" condition for an unrelated mast cell tumor 5 years earlier. Despite being paying customers for 5 years they of course found a way to deny our claim when we needed help. We wish... Read More

Healthy Paws has been a god send. Having the insurance allowed us to seek immediate treatment when we learned our rescued dog had a condition that required surgery in order to prevent severe pain and permanent lameness. Filing claims is quick and easy right from my phone and any and every contact with this company has been absolutely a pleasure.
