Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws is super affordable. We had a claim within a year. Our dog ate some Ibuprofen and needed to visit an ER. It was expensive. I wasn't sure how complicated it would be to file a claim...It was SUPER EASY. Did it right on my phone and approved within a few days. Someone followed up to see how our dog was doing too! Love them and highly recommend them. We researched a few different pet insurance companies and were a little hesitant. Not anymore. Healthy Paws is great!

My two little dogs have been insured by Healthy Paws for at least 5 years, and I'm so happy to have them taken care of. One had a broken leg, the other had a knee surgery two years ago and his second surgery last Wednesday. I can take a picture of my invoice and use the app on my phone to submit the claim right there. I get a response the same day and a check comes in the mail very quickly. I also get follow up personal emails asking how my Ralph is doing or Delilah. I just am so happy with Healthy Paws. I picked the $250 deductible with 80% coverage and it has worked well for me. I just can't recommend them enough. Through correspondence I find that they love animals and miss being able... I just want to thank you for being soooo great in our time of need ! We filed claims for Gracee Mae our sweet fur baby who ingested my husband's Mobic for his pain for his knee. It was an awful, terrifying experience but with prayers and a miracle and our wonderful veterinarian - she is back to super dog again after several weeks. Our claims were filed so easily and we got immediate response from you and have already received our checks. In all the stress and tears - you were there for us. I wish our human insurance was half as good as your group. We have a "Golden Doodle" Facebook group and so many others have sung your praises also - we are recommending you to all our fur baby parents -... Read More

We very much appreciate having Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. My daughter has autism, and "Sparkles" is her emotional support dog. We would do anything for this little dog who is so important to my daughter. Therefore we purchased insurance with the maximum coverage and the lowest deductible - even so, our monthly fee is reasonable. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance gives us peace of mind knowing we could afford "to do everything necessary" for Sparkles (though hopefully there will not be many occasions to be in that position!). Healthy Paws Pet Insurance customer service is excellent - one of the best companies I've ever had dealings with. Their phone representatives are always knowledgeable and... Read More

Just purchased the insurance this year never thinking I'd need it so soon. My 5 y/o Golden (Mia) started to limp and was diagnosed with an ACL injury in her knee and needed surgery. I submitted all her health records and surgical costs and was reimbursed within the week. I was stunned at how quickly and efficiently her case was handled. Having the insurance saved me several thousand dollars and was well worth the nominal monthly pet insurance costs. Not only that - they emailed me to follow up on how she was doing. I definitely recommend them without hesitation!

I insisted to my husband that we get pet insurance for our beloved border collies. They were both in perfect health at the time (Sparkle - 4 years, Magic - 2 years), and so we signed up with Healthy Paws in May 2015. Two months later, Sparkle got sick with a severe urinary tract infection and was rushed to the emergency vet because she was peeing blood. Healthy Paws covered the claim and it was a big help to us. Within the first year having Healthy Paws, Sparkle had a few claims related to her UTI, and also a lipoma biopsy, all which was covered with no hassle. The claims were processed quickly. This year, our other dog Magic had a cracked tooth, which was an unexpected $1400 expense for... Read More

HP has made things very simple with their straightforward policy, their claim submission app, and their quick turn around time on claim determination. They have been a financial savior for us when our dog had emergency surgery.

Official Response

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
James - We’re sorry you were not satisfied with your policy. Healthy Paws makes every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. The majority of your claims were for preventative/routine care, which are not covered by your policy. Others were for a pre-existing condition which was noted in your pet’s medical records prior to enrollment. The balance of your claims were covered by your policy and went towards the deductible you chose at the time of your enrollment. We’re sorry to lose you as a customer and hope Dude stays well!

They have been very responsive to our needs and at times immediate consideration. Our coverage as allowed us to offer our dog the best care, no matter the costs. Each claim I have submitted has been reviewed with a check in the mail on average of 3-4 business days. We have not had any issues in getting reimbursement. Staff have been warm and helpful during regular and critical events in our dog's history. Just wished my own medical insurance was this easy!
