Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I am very pleased with my experience with Healthy Paws. I had to file quite a few claims for my young cat's misadventure this summer and they were all paid promptly and as advertised. The phone app made everything very easy.

I signed my Chocolate Lab puppy, Innis, up with Healthy Paws after researching multiple pet insurance companies over the course of two weeks. I decided on Healthy Paws for a number of reasons. First, they basically had the best "bang for my buck". I chose a reasonable deductible, and they offer a 90% reimbursement (which no one else did at the time). I read numerous reviews, good and bad, and felt they were the company to go with. Claims are processed quickly and smoothly. They even email you to see how your pet is feeling. The mobile app is easy to use and super convenient. You just take a picture of the vet bill and click submit. They even do charity work to help homeless pets. Really a... Read More

I have had my Golden Retriever insured through HealthyPaws for 2 years, but thankfully, I have not had to make a claim. Recently, Buddy had to have some surgery done. It was nice knowing HealthyPaws was there. They claim process was very quick. They were very clear on what was needed, and their communication and updates were great. Not only did they email me, but the HealthyPaws Iphone app alerted me every time there was an update. They were very courteous, and even sent an email to see how he was recovering. They love animals, and it shows. They honored their coverage promises, and didn't try to make excuses to deny coverage. HealthyPaws lives up to their promises. It's great to... Read More

This is my first experience owning a pet and using pet insurance. I made this choice after getting literally gutted with end of life care fees with my last cat. This was so heartbreaking to have the stress of high costs looming over your head and heart while being so stressed about your ailing pet at the same time. I got a new amazing Maine Coon kitten this fall-his parents tested negative for all the typical Maine Coon congenital diseases. I did my research and HealthyPaws came out on top- so I went with them. I have had some recent distressing vet visits for my little guy who is battling with frequent UTIs and the painful symptoms that go along with that. I have submitted 6 claims so... Read More

I have been so impressed with Healthy Paws! My poor pug got into a fight a few weeks ago and her eye got injured and required 2 separate surgeries. I took photos of the invoices and medical record and within days, I received the reimbursement check. Not only that, but I was sent a follow-up personal email checking on my dog. It wasn't one of those "insert name here" emails, either. It was really genuine. I felt like the folks at Healthy Paws cared about my dogs well-being. The email made me smile all morning and I was telling everyone how awesome it made me feel and how awesome Healthy Paws is.

They are very professional and the application process was so easy. No hassle claims process and quik!! The previous provider i used never processed one claim!! They kept asking for the vet notes or anything to delay! Healthy paws as been a much better replacement and they are the only pet insurance provider I will ever use for my pets. The thing that I have appreciated the most is the sincere and individual attention they have offered. They even sent an email just to ask how my dog was doing after a recent illness. I can not endorse this company enough!!!

They are not all-inclusive as they advertise. Pay close attention to the fine print. My dog had a knee injury 11 days into the policy and Healthy Paws wouldn't cover any of it because the 15-day waiting period had not yet ended. Even though he had surgery after the waiting period they wouldn't cover it because "clinical signs or symptoms of the condition treated were noted in his medical records as being present during the waiting period". They wouldn't even cover the consultation because they don't cover that either. They only cover the cost of the veterinary treatment (not the cost of the vet consult or anything other than the actual "treatment") "related to an accident, illness or... Read More

I don't know what I would do if I didn't have Healthy Paws. I have two dogs that have decided to be careless and injury-prone. With each medical bill, all I need do take a picture of the bill and a check arrives about a week later. Couldn't be easier. And truely, for my pups, a life saver.

Before our French Bulldog, Frankie, came to our home I researched pet insurances knowing that Frenchies tend to have issues over their lifetime. I chose Healthy Paws and cannot say enough about them. Frankie recently had soft palate surgery and had to have his nostrils enlarged. The breathing issues were causing stomach problems as well. We had been to the vet and under different medications for several months. I was referred to a specialist who recommended the surgery plus biopsies, bloodwork, x-rays and ultrasound. I submitted my claims to Healthy Paws and immediately received a confirmation that they were being reviewed. Within days my claim was approved and checks were on the way.... Read More
