Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I wanted to share the great success that we have had with our HEALTHY PAWS PET INSURANCE for our nearly 3 yr-old Great Dane Tank our 10 month-old Basset Hound, Chubbers. Although Tank is not quite 3 yrs-old, he has had two neuro-surgeries, a broken tail which resulted in an infection and eventual amputation, the removal of his anal glands (due to a likely related infection) and various other more minor problems. Although he is very healthy today, these surgeries have cost in excess of $35,000. Our little Chubbers (who likes to eat things and get obstructed) has had two surgeries and other expenses exceeding $12,000. For all of these problems we have paid a total of 10%. The insurance has... Read More

Healthy Paws is amazing! From answering all my questions and making the claim process effortless to even checking in on my pup after his surgery they have been kind and helpful. It doesn't even feel like an insurance company. I would highly recommend them to any pet owner!

Healthy Paws is amazing. Their coverage has helped tremendously helped us take care of our kitten on a couple of occassions the first time was for an inflammatory eye condition and the second time was due to lily poisoning. Our cat is doing well and very healthy. Healthy paws made the process so easy and all their support staff have been very professional with great customer service. If you have a pet, you owe it to them and yourself to get this insurance.

If I could give Health Paws 10 stars I would. Can't say enough great things about this pet insurance. Human insurance could learn a thing or two from them. A couple of months ago I had one of the worst days of my life. My 5 year old Golden Retriever collapsed right in front of me. Rushed her to the vet and ultimately to the emergency vet where they discovered a non cancerous cyst on her liver had burst. They did emergency surgery and then we were in for the long haul recovery. She lost a lot of blood and was very sick. Having this insurance allowed my to take money off the table and do everything possible to try and save this sweet little girl. Through the entire ordeal,... Read More

I live in Oregon and enrolled my Maltese when he was a young puppy. He was bitten by wasps and almost died a couple years ago and spent an expensive but life saving stay at the hospital and my bill was almost 2K. Healthy Paws was AMAZING. They reimburse quickly and the process is so easy to submit claims. I had no idea that an insurance company could be so ethical and I would recommend them to anyone.

My experience with Healthy Paws has been phenomenal! When I first got my dog there was the questions of whether to get pet insurance, or whether to hope for the best - my dog is young and healthy. After many hours of reading reviews on several pet insurance providers, I decided to purchase a policy from Healthy Paws. They had a good range of plans, and I was able to find the one that worked for me very easily. My dog has been an absolute joy, but things got scary a month ago, and he needed emergency care and some very expensive tests. Every person that I have called at Healthy Paws has been so attentive, efficient in helping me, and so very caring. This made such a huge... Read More

We have been so impressed with Healthy Paws---their coverage and most of all their extraordinary responsiveness. Our Lakeland Terrier (above in the photo), after 4 years of total health, was found to have liver disease on a routine check. We have been dealing with this for the last 3 months, and Healthy Paws has been with us all the way. We are so grateful.

I cannot say enough about how fantastic Healthy Paws insurance is. I have had other pet insurances previously, and they simply did not compare. Our claims are handled extremely quickly (often within hours), and the customer service is phenomenal. Our cat was diagnosed with a rare illness, and Healthy Paws responded efficiently and with care and genuine concern for our pet. I highly recommend Healthy Paws.

Did exactly what they're supposed to do. I've had Healthy Paws for about 18 months with no claims. Once a claim was easily submitted online, they reached out to my vet for complete records. Once the records were received, they approved the claims for the correct amount and checks were mailed out. Start to finish, the claim process took about 10 days. Can't ask for more.
