Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Promises and delivers. Submitting claims is easy via an app, claims are processed quickly, and there are hardly ever surprises in terms of coverage. Our pup went through 2 knee surgeries and we were reimbursed nearly 90%. Not only that, a representative reached out to us personally to inquire about her progress. How nice is that?

Vinnie cracked his upper rear molar, and the root pulp was exposed. His vet referred us to a veterinary dentist who recommended a root canal with filling. The estimate was nearly $2,000. Ouch! Vinnie's Healthy Pets policy paid their share (90% minus our $500 annual deductible) within several days of submitting our claim electronically. It was so quick and easy! I recommend Healthy Pets health insurance to all of my friends. We will never be without it. It is so reassuring to know that IF Vinnie gets hurt or sick we will be able to afford his care. And on a fixed income that means the world to us!

I did my research when looking for pet insurance. Healthy Paws was number one. And after my boxer / Mastiff needed a $4,300 knee surgery, I received a re-embursement check in the mail 2 weeks after my dogs surgery. I couldn't be more satisfied with this insurance and highly recommend them!

Please note I have posted the following on other review sites. June, 2015 I insured my pit bull, Scratch ,with Healthy Paws (HP) for 90% reimbursement, less $250.00 deductible. Last December, 2015 Scratch ripped her cruciate ligament. She required surgery and physical therapy. Healthy Paws delivered: On average I receive reimbursement (by snail mail) within 10 days after claim approval. Oh man, HP makes it so easy to submit claims! Immediately after receiving statement of services and associated costs, I usually submit claims at provider's premises. HP promptly sends notification upon claim approval (or if they require additional information), Their customer support is just... Read More

If it weren't for Healthy Paws, I don't know what I would have done. My dog was recently diagnosed with a mass cell tumor and needed surgery immediately to remove it. Because of Healthy Paws, I never felt like I didn't have the option to give her the best care possible. Their service is invaluable. I'm so happy I found them.

Both of my chocolate labs have been covered by Healthy Paws for the last two years. Healthy Paws has made it possible for us to be able to get our pups life-saving care without the fear of not being able to afford the cost. Their fast claims processing and reimbursement has also been better than any other pet insurance company I have used in the past. Finally, I really appreciate members of the Healthy Paws team sending me a personalized email checking up on my pups after a surgery or other major procedure had occurred. Their dedication to their clients, their fast and efficient service, and the various protection plans offered really make Healthy Paws an excellent option for your pet... Read More

I am not someone who typically writes reviews; but, Healthy Paws is such an amazing company that I want to shout it from the rooftops! I rescued a kitten, Murphy, last summer, and knew that veterinary care was part of being a responsible pet owner. As a graduate student, my income in very limited. Thus, I started researching pet insurance companies almost immediately. After thorough research, I settled on Healthy Paws because: (1) Premiums cannot be raised based on how many claims you submit, (2) There is no lifetime limit on coverage (this is especially important given the lifespan of cats), (3) You can visit ANY veterinarian you want (including specialists) and be reimbursed based on... Healthy Paws Insurance is a 5 star plan. The rating system above would not let me indicate such. Healthy Paws response time is unbelievable. No sooner do I make my claim but I get an email acknowledging such. A day later or less I get a notice that my claim has been processed and completed. At that point I can see how much my check will be. Since I know the particulars of my policy, it never differs from my estimate. I have a $100 ANNUAL DEDUCTIBLE with a 90% co-insurance plan. It is reasonably priced compared to other programs including ones offered by my veterinarian. My vet actually now sends in my claim directly from their office to speed up the process. However, I can make... Read More

Healthy Paws was one of the best decisions my wife and I made when we got our new pup almost 2 years ago. Recently, he started having an upset tummy that quickly turned to vomiting anything he ate and diarrhea that looked like something out of a horror movie. This led us to the emergency vet at 2AM requiring hospitalization and monitoring for over a day. In the end he made a complete recovery, the vet said we made the right call, and Healthy Paws took immediate care of us. Once I submitted the claim, they processed in just a few days and had a check to us that covered most of the costs in about a week. On top of that, their client services team even did a personal outreach to make... Read More
