Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I have been with Healthy Paws for about a year. They process claims very quickly, and it is a breath of fresh air to not have to fight with insurance for coverage. Their mobile app makes the claims process a breeze. I definitely recommend them, you will be glad you have them when/if the moment comes.

I wish all insurance companies (ie those for humans) were as responsive as Healthy Paws. My family adopted a rambunctious Great Dane who's deaf and partially sighted, and he's gotten into some mischief. He swallowed two small stuffed animals whole (yes, whole) and swallowed some medicine that he dug out of my purse. He also had ripped his paw pad. That translates to three trips to the emergency vet in the last five months, and therefore three claims submitted to Healthy Paws insurance. In each case, the claim was processed within a couple of days and we had a check within the week. Wow! My husband said, "Zane has better insurance than we do." Not only that, they followed... We just filed out first claim with Healthy Paws and could not be more thrilled to have our pet insurance with them. My dog Wally began to vomit for an unknown reason one evening. After vomiting twice overnight and being inappetent the following day, we took him to our emergency clinic. Radiographs, thorough lab work, and an abdominal ultrasound later did not reveal the cause of his severe gastroenteritis. He required two nights of hospitalization before he turned the corner. I can't explain how comforting it was to tell the ER and Internal Medicine specialists to "move forward" to save our dog knowing that 90% of our bill would be reimbursed. He has needed additional lab work to make sure... Read More

I cannot say enough good things about Healthy Paws Pet Insurance! Recently, my 7lb yorkiepoo, Reese, required leg surgery on both of her back legs. As you can imagine, this was a very difficult time. Reese is like a child to me so something this serious and expensive was quite the stressor. Working with Healthy Paws through this whole thing has truly been a pleasure. Anytime I had any questions about billing, policies, etc. they were quick to help- sometimes getting an e-mail response within the hour! These individuals are kind, caring, and compassionate. They truly do care about the well-being of your pet. They have gone out of their way to send me e-mails just to check up on Reese and... Read More

Five years ago, I spent a great deal of time investigating pet health care insurance companies. Today, I am glad I did. Without a doubt, Healthy Paws is the best investment I have made for my pet family. Their coverage is the best and most inclusive. They reimburse claims quickly and more importantly, their customer service is the best. I wish I had health care coverage as good as Healthy Paws provides Winston. They have taken one worry away from me...and that means more than you can know.

These folks are AWESOME! My 2 year old cat needed hip surgery, and it was quite expensive. I submitted the claim on a Thursday night, and received the check covering 90% of the cost the following Monday. I also have had occasion to call a couple of times, and have spoken to very caring, considerate, professional, compassionate, and helpful people. They help make pet ownership even more of a pleasure than it already is!

First of all, thank you Healthy Paws so much for your amazingly personal and efficient service. I submitted the invoice and my Vet uploaded our puppy's records on a Monday and we had our reimbursement check on that Thursday. I have posted to all my social media, so you may be getting an uptick in business. Many are skeptical about pet insurance, and even the emergency pet hospital had not heard about good pet insurance, so I'm glad I did my research and could not recommend you highly enough.

Anyone who complains about exam fees and pre-existing conditions not being covered really need to pull their heads out of the sand and simply READ the policy. It is also very clear on the website what is and isn't covered. If you're surprised after the fact, that's squarely on you. Our Great Dane and Shih Tzu have been covered by Healthy Paws for nearly three years now. The coverage has always come in handy for the everyday claims that pet parents incur. Filing claims is a paperless breeze with the mobile app, and we generally receive reimbursement within a week. The only thing I wish is that they had an option for direct deposit. Healthy Paws really stepped up today as our Dane is... Read More

Long story short, our mini golden doodle, Leni, had to have emergency stomach surgery for eating some toys that got stuck in her intestinal track. We thought the first surgery went ok, but learned quickly she was not quite right....and it took TWO more surgeries to get finally make her better. In total, it was about a months worth of time for poor Leni, and you can imagine that the hospital bills stacked up....$21,500 worth of stacked up. Fortunately, we only had to pay $4500 of it. I can honestly say that if it weren't for Healthy Paws, Leni would not be here right now. Everyone I talked to over there was always so kind, caring, and overall amazing through the whole process. They... Read More

Grace, my 11 lb dog was bitten by a large dog and had to go to emergency care after hours. Healthy Paws services were fantastic. Their claims process was very quick (got a response within 24 hours) and user friendly (used the app) . While I never hoped to use the coverage, it was a relief to know I had them. I'm telling all my friends about Healthy Paws and a huge advocate.
