VRBO is a travel search engine which is a registered trademark of HomeAway.com. It offers information on over 2 million house rentals worldwide with more than 25,000 pet-friendly properties to choose from. It also provides detailed listings on properties such as those with free baby and kid amenities.

Services and Features

VRBO makes searching for a vacation rental simple by letting you enter a destination and travel dates. It also has search filters which lets travellers narrow down results. Travellers can inquire on 3 or more properties which increases their chance of booking. It also has a “Book it Now” option to select a listing.

The company ensures that the money spent vacation is covered with its Cancellation and Damage Protection. This covers non-refundable refundable trip costs in case customers need to cancel their trip due to selected reasons. Typically, vacation rental payments become non-refundable 30 to 90 days in advance of the arrival date. With Cancellation Protection, consumers can insure their trip cost of up to $50,000 if they need to cancel and reimburse due to covered events such as flight cancellations, mandatory evacuation, job loss, injury, sickness, and more.

Damage Protection helps travellers be protected against expenses incurred due to accidentally damage a vacation rental property. This can reimburse travellers if their refundable damage deposit is withheld due to a covered loss. Coverage is offered starting from $59 up to $1,500 with no deductible.

I booked a reservation for a house in Miami in November 2020 for my birthday in February 2021. We were set to check in on 2/13/21. About a week before my check in date (2/5/21), I received a message from the property owner stating that they are cancelling my reservation because of the pandemic. Panic set in as I had 13 people (including myself) flying in to Miami in a week and expected to have a house to stay at. I called VRBO and explained the situation; asking if this was something they could actually do. Beware, Black Duck / VRBO 911683, property owners Renee Reid & Rich Wyatt cancelled reservation and kept deposit. We had a reservation made in 7/2020 for a 7/2021 stay. In Nov '20, we reached out to the owners to see what penalties, if any, we would incur if we cancelled. The owners informed us they have a 'no cancellation' policy and we would lose all of our deposit. After a bit of back and forth on trying to settle on an amount to forfeit, we decided to keep our reservation as is and not cancel at ll. We chose not to lose any money. I could not get owner of 906151 to respond. I booked wit a credit card, the 24 hours to respond expired so I could not book. Wrote the owner 5 times, he finally responded and I told him I would book again. This time, again, no response so I canceled before the 24 hours expired. Waiting to see what happens. I received statements no charges to be made on my credit card. What I find troubling is the owner would not respond. He did owner respond to a friend, with 10 minutes each time they contacted. How do get away with saying a property is available for the dates I selected then require credit card information but give the owner 24 hours to “accept” the reservation?!? Then I receive an email from owner saying the dates are not available!! This is total BS that you take an individual’s credit card info before confirming. 😡

They do not vet their property owners, and they don't provide any protection to renters to keep owners from scamming them with erroneous claims.

Where should I start, I am not someone that likes giving bad reviews but they kind of forced me to. We booked a property near Yellowstone national park. After booking, we received a letter for an appointment with immigration services so we needed to reschedule. Contacted the owner and he said that he'll change the reservation but he never did. Contacted him again after a week only for him to tell us that the property is no longer available for the new dates and suggested another ( more expensive property). We called VRBO and after many many lost hours ( worst customer service ever) they said that they won't charge us the cancellation fees nor the difference in price. So we booked the new... Read More

After booking I needed to cancel due to Covid with the family I was going with. I told the owner sept 10 that I wouldn’t be able to make it & my check in was the 18th. I was 6 days into the cancellation policy of only receiving 50% refund. When I spoke to a Vrbo representative she assured me I would receive 100% refund due to Covid and this particular case and that they would prompt the owner to issue the refund. I asked the rep if there was anything else on my end I needed to do after this call. She said no and that it could take 3-4 weeks for the refund. I will not use VRBO again. I have been waiting on my deposit to be return for two months now and I don't believe my 300 dollars will ever be return. Also you all need to be aware that the price on the listing is not what you will pay for the rental. Along with the listed price their is an owners fee added. We rented a ten bedroom and their was seven of us. We ended up pay over a hundred dollars for an "Extra Person Fee". We rented through VRBO in August of 2020. The place was nice but the fees and the lack of return from deposits will keep me away.

Booked a rental in January for an event that brings thousands of people to the Gulf Coast in October. That’s how far ahead you have to book. Received an email this week saying my reservations were canceled. Wasn’t given any reason whatsoever. I reached out to the property manager asking her to give me a call but so far nothing. I do NOT recommend using them. I will stay in a hotel going forward where at least theres a pretty good chance you won’t get kicked out.

I do not recommend VRBO or South Padre Island Rentals. I rented a lovely home at 111 E. Capricorn C South Padre Island, Tx for 8/52020 to 8/9/2020. I notified them weeks in advance that we could not make the trip due to Covid. Two members of our family had come down with Covid 19. It was too bad of a time to come in August anyway because of Covid & my husband and I were having to fly from California. When making the arrangements they referred us to a Trip Cancellation service called CSA travel protection which I paid $420.45 for. SPI will not return my money or help me get it back.
