Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

Service is horrible. The replacement parts used are extremely cheap and in some cases not even working. Repairs are based on riging things up so you end up making the repair yourself or seeking help and paying for it yourself as well. This is a huge rip off. Not only have I paid multiple $75 fees for the same issues, along with dealing with disreputable repair companies, but the issues are never actually resolved! Stay away from this nightmare!

Because of Hurricane Irma, I was not able to get an AC Technician and it took three days to get someone at my house to fix the AC unit. However, the technician that finally showed up was very helpful and tackle the problem right away.

It is painful getting in contact with a living human. We were on hold for an hour. You cost me $1000, because I had no AC in summer, and your "preferred " company was not even going to get to us for a week. We had to go to a hotel. The company was some mega regional organization. After forcing the matter you brought in a second local person who came in a couple days. It is like you expect people to only call for an inconvenience, not an emergency. Loosing a dishwasher, stove or washer is an inconvenience. I see waiting a few days to get help, maybe. However, not having AC or heat needs a different level of urgency. You should let us get whomever we can get out... Read More

I am very dissatisfied with AHS. Overtime they send someone its someone who barely speaks english and if asked any questions they respond as if you are stupid for asking.

I've had AHS for several years and made the decision to try them because we were shelling out TONS of money insuring each appliance separately through the big box stores ! Our experience has been that they are professional, courteous and experienced. This was a good decision and AHS has been well worth it !

I looked forward to having my home purchased protected by AHS. I have now used them to fix several problems that occurred after I closed on our house. Three of the four contractor performed great while one did not.

We have been AHS customers since 2006. From 2006-2009, service was good. Since 2009, and especially in last 2 years, we have noticed consistently poor customer service, no follow-through on commitments, no returns of promised calls by supervisors, issues are not resolved in a timely manner, poor quality vendors that are dispatched to fix issues, etc. Tired of waiting for 30-45 minutes to talk with someone, and customer reps who disconnect us while transferring to a supervisor. Final straw was waiting 6+ weeks to get my covered washing machine fixed, and being charged for service fees the supervisor agreed to waive. Never again with AHS.

I tried 2 days to schedule an appointment on the phone and the first time was on hold for over an hour and the second time over 30 minutes before I hung up but not before I got a non-English speaking person on the phone. To say the least, I just ended up making the appointment online

I have had houses covered by AHS for about 25 years. While I have had bumps through the years, mostly minor HVAC repairs, my experience had overall been good, and I had recommended the product to others. That has changed. My central air went out on Sunday 8/20, I reported it on line. It took 5 days for a contractor to make it ( I took time off work). They left paperwork, and said they'll follow up next week. It took several days - then I was told it was denied - dirty - which was not mentioned on the paperwork - it is 19 years old, clear of brush & debris. I asked for a second opinion - 5 more days to arrive, 5 days after that, I am told by the contractor that the repair is... Read More
