Our Overall Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Excellent)

American Home Shield's coverage is among the most comprehensive we've seen in the industry. The company covers considerably more appliances and systems than its competitors and has fewer coverage limitations.

The company recently updated its plans—they now have three to simplify choosing the right one for your home. American Home Shield focuses on the repairs that offer the most value to consumers, removing items that are inexpensive to replace, increasing its coverage limits on appliances in its most expensive plan to reflect today's higher-priced, "gourmet" appliances, and adding roof leak coverage.

Coverage Options - 4.7 / 5

American Home Shield offers consumers a choice of three plans, following a good-better-best model. Its ShieldSilver plan warrants systems only, but can be amended with certain add-ons, including pools, electronics, and guest houses. Its ShieldGold plan covers a range of systems and appliances, again with add-on options. Its ShieldPlatinum plan covers everything in the ShieldGold plan, plus roof leaks up to $1500 and some routine maintenance services. These include free HVAC tune-ups, unlimited top ups on your AC refrigerant, coverage for code violations including permits.

All told, American Home Shield covers 23 systems and appliances, considerably more than most of their competitors, and fully covers 11 of those items. There is no limit on the number of claims a customer can file over the year’s contract, either.

Contract & Price - 5 / 5

American Home Shield has a flexible pricing policy and offers three different coverage plans and two trade service call fee levels: $100 and $125.

This allows consumers to have input into the annual price based on their budgetary needs.

We requested a quote for a single family home under 5,000 square feet located in a medium-sized midwestern city. The minimum annual premium (Shield Silver Plan) was $59.99 per month. The maximum premium (Shield Platinum Plan) was $109.99. So AHS prices are somewhat higher than many competitive plans. Consumers should note that their final price will vary by plan, service call charge selected, and location.

I had American Home Shield for 2 years until 05/20/20 when I logged into my back account to notice that they had charged me more money for my bill. I then logged onto my account with them to realize my contract had expired. They state on their website that you will be notified by email or mail BEFORE your contract is set to expire so that you are able to renew it. So I then called to speak to someone, after all of the sale gimics I ended up cancelling my contract with them. Fast forward to today 05/23/20 when we turn on the AC....it isnt working. The same AC compressor is messed up. I call American Home Shield because I was told this part is under warranty as we had it replaced June of... Read More

I have used AHS for a number of years. The company’s responsiveness Is impressive. They get my appliances repaired, or replaced, as necessary every time I made a call for assistance. I have never considered leaving AHS for another company, even though I have had many such offers from competitors who promise to save me money and give me better service. When you are as satisfied as I, those promises fall on deaf ears. This is a good company with a great policy.

this is the 4th day and no one has contacted me to set an appointment for my service request. I paid my fee of $100, it was taken out of my account and no service. I've been calling AHS all they do is put me on hold to contact the contractor, which I was doing the same thing and not getting my call answered. AHS needs to rethink about their agreement they have for the contractors they have for their customer's services. taking money and promising a service within 48 hours and still nothing is NOT RIGHT! I'm ready to take my service elsewhere and refund back my money. Mind you, when calling AHS you will be on hold for over 30mins only to answer you call without solutions or drop your... Read More

.We have had nothing but trouble contacting this company to be reimbursed for a microwave oven we agreed to purchase and install. AHS owes us $279.00 and have called four times requesting reimbursement, keeping us on the phone for up to 2 hrs. But to no avail. This company seems to be a fraud....Ken Casper, Mammoth Lakes, CA

I don't know what is happening to AHS but each time I call for repair, they send out a technicians to review or inspect the situations, which is about 4/5 days after call. Then the parts are ordered and the waiting period begins for the parts and the technicians to find time on schedule for repairs. It took 1 weeks for AHS to inform me, I was not covered for prior request after 1 week of waiting for technician. Now, the technicians came out and said, the repair person will return after they order the parts from AHS. Why can't the contractor have the parts or the right to order the parts for my washer machine and glass cooking range? I am about to switch companies because of the... Read More

I would give them Zero stars if that was an option. Thus company has gone down rapidly. I have had American home shield for at least 5 years + and monthly payments as well as service at the beginning was great. Not only has my monthly charge increased by $40 a month now AHS will not fix or replace my faucet that doesn't work. A few years ago they easily replaced a non working faucet. I have seen the quality of what they allow go down hill. Also the companies they utilize now are the bottom of the barrel. They have no problem taking my money but won't replace broken items. I will be changing companies and taking all my family and friends with me ( who I referred to AHS) .

I’ve been covered by AHS for several years and have submitted several claims to them. All have been resolved to my complete satisfaction except one. I must say that in that one unsatisfactory experience, the claim was handled by AHS in accordance with their contract. All AHS contractors that I have had experience with were professional, knowledgeable and did their professional best to resolve the problem. All in all, I have no complaints and would recommend AHS to anyone looking for the coverage they provide.
