Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

Although their service offer is similar to that some competitors, it must be noted that First American contracts are short and easy to understand, which is another feature that potential clients will surely appreciate.

First American is not honoring their own warranty contract to repair/replace my house AC that broke a month ago on 5/11. They sent an incompetent contractor to my house who did not completely diagnose the issue. Then this contractor called and tried to sell me a replacement AC, telling me the warranty company would only pay a small percentage portion of the replacement costs and not anything more. Since then I have paid out of pocket for 3 additional HVAC companies to diagnose the issue. I have provided First American with this information in an attempt to get them to understand their contractor did an incomplete job and was dishonest with me. I have been told many times by First American... Read More

Hello Robyn. According to our records you placed a claim on May 12, 2024, for your air conditioning unit not working properly. First American dispatched independent contractor, South Placer Heating and Air who reported a compressor failure as well as an unrepairable leak in the evaporative coil, with the contractor recommending that the condenser and evaporative coil be replaced. Our records indicate that we are awaiting your acceptance of either the non-covered costs or the cash payment in lieu of the condenser and evaporative coil replacement. You can refer to your home warranty contract under Limits of Liability number Seven and Fifteen, for more information.

This has been the worst experience. Unable to get an answer as to why they are not having the company they assigned to fix a built in oven/stove and microwave. We were told it was fixable and needed parts. The stove when you turn burner on all burners get hot. When you call to speak to someone you can not understand them and they are flippant. Waited 17 minutes to speak to a supervisor or someone who was understandable. We have been waiting for an answer/parts since May 24th. Oh and the counter gets hot when you use the oven/ stove. Do not use this company. What’s even better our contract expired 3 days ago and a salesperson named Gina wanted to renew the contract at almost double... Read More

Please do yourself a favor and look somewhere else. There was a leak in our ceiling which I reported to FA. Their contractor cut a hole in our ceiling without reinforcing it, which FA was supposed to repair. We made several attempts for the repairs. We were told that someone would be sent to fix the damage. They never send anyone. We got the repairs fixed and sent proof of payments. We have been calling for months now to get reimbursement for the damages. The person assigned to the case has refused to respond to both calls and emails. We have gotten no assistance and FA is refusing to provide any further assistance or information. We have been dealing with this issue since 10/2023. Look... Read More

I am a new homeowner and I love First American. Yes, every company has its issues and bumps along the road, so they appreciate the customer's and the technicians' feedback to work through these issues. The first year in my home, my HVAC went out and needed to be replaced. This warranty company helped me from being scammed by one of their vendors. I submitted a claim for a possible leak on the roof. The estimate was questionable, and the tech attempted to deduct a fee out of the allowable cash-out. The HVAC was programmed incorrectly and we were without heat for a few weeks and had to get portable heaters, they reimbursed me for the portable heaters. The home warranty is WORTH IT! The... Terrible company. We have trying to get our refrigerator fixed since 12/25/23. As of today 5/10/24 it is still not fixed. They contract with cheap companies to save money and these people have no idea what they are doing. They also sent out multiple technicians who would not even touch it because they are not LG certified so we are left waiting and our time has been wasted. The first contractor they sent messed up our refrigerator so bad that it is not fixable but they still keep sending people out who just change parts over and over again but it is still not fixed. Our refrigerator should have been replaced by now but they just keep sending out more technicians to try and fix it and... Read More

I've waited 6 days for my hot water tank replacement and still have to wait for the warranty company to buy the tank then recontact the contractor to have it installed. I'm still waiting rather than they have a contractor fix it and reimburse them. A customer for 2.5 years only because they cover pools that I'm still here so sorry.!

AD Military customer for 3+ years since returning from overseas. Customer service has always been great; not difficult to contact and they are always pleasant and professional. Wait times on the other hand have been far from ideal. Some examples include: • 7 month wait for a simple HVAC repair (common part replacement) •• Wait time fault mostly on FAHWs assigned contractor (not sure how well they vetted the contractor given the awful reviews on many sites) however nothing tangible was accomplished through frequent communication with both parties during the process • cash-out request delayed nearly 3 weeks (typically 3 business days) • (current/unresolved issue) Hot Water Tank... One out of three service requests were actually performed. The first one was a garbage disposal incident and went off without a hitch. It was great. The second one was a dryer issue. The service personnel called me at the end of the appointment window to exclaim he was going to be an hour late. I've already pushed my plans back for the service but then the service being late officially ruined my night. However, he didn't even show up an hour later. But the extreme kicker is that the service personnel marked my service request as "needing to get new parts". I had to spend several hours on the phone with First American Home Warranty to explain to them that the service personnel never... Read More

Scott, We would like to apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced during the handling of your claim. According to our records you placed a claim on February 15, 2023, for your clothes dryer not working properly and we dispatched Premier Appliance Service who scheduled an appointment for February 17, 2023, although was unable to service on the date scheduled and requested to reschedule the appointment. You declined to reschedule the appointment or allow First American to dispatch another contractor, therefore the claim was cancelled, and the service fee was refunded back to the credit card used to pay it. Our records indicate another claim was placed on November 9, 2023, for the dishwasher not working properly and we dispatched Fox Appliance who reported running the dishwasher cycles, checking the air gap as well as drain line, and finding no mechanical failure to the dishwasher. You informed First American that you asked the contractor to leave, and we offered to send a second opinion contractor to confirm the diagnosis. You can refer to your home warranty contract under Limits of Liability number ten and Customer Service number two, which states: “Company may obtain a second opinion.” “Contract holder pays the $85 service call fee for each separate trade call. Trade call means each visit by an approved Contractor, unless multiple visits are required to remedy the same problem. Persons dispatched for trade calls are independent contractors, not agents or employees of the Company. Company warrants Contractor’s work for 30 days. If the Item fails outside this time period, an additional service call fee will be charged. Failure to pay the service call fee may delay processing of future claims.” If you are experiencing a dishwasher failure, please contact First American directly so we may re-dispatch a contractor to diagnose the failure.
