Coverage Options - 4.1 / 5

First American offers two plans, the Basic coverage, and Premier coverage.

While their basic coverage protects mainly kitchen appliances, their Premier plan offers complete protection for all main home systems as well as appliances.

In line with most businesses in the industry, however, they will not cover cosmetic damages, damages due to improper maintenance or installation, and any known or unknown pre-existing conditions.

Coverage amounts differ by contract, yet their limits range around $3,000 in the aggregate for kitchen refrigerators, $1,500 for heating systems, and $500 for ductwork, which are substantially higher than comparable companies.

Contract & Price - 3.8 / 5

Annual premiums with First American can range from $300 to $500+ depending on the plan and option selections, quite reasonable within the home warranty industry.

The company extends a standard 12-month contract term and allows customers to obtain quotes and enroll online. Contracts seem to have different cancellation policies according to geographical location, so customers are advised to read their warranty agreements thoroughly before signing.

For instance, Texas residents may cancel their plans within the first seven days of coverage for a full refund, whereas Virginia residents have 20 days to cancel and receive back the entirety of their payment, provided they have not filed any claims under said contract.

Awful company! I have had them for the last nine years and suddenly in the last 18 months I have had two claims and their contractors were terrible. I have currently been without a working furnace for 20 days since the first contractor came on the 1/18 and told me he would only replace the covered part if I replaced a gas line (that was replaced in the last 18mos) that wasn't covered for 200.00. I asked him to leave my home and called First American back and they sent a new contractor out to my home which informed me the first contractor had taken the ignition bracket out of my furnace and it was nowhere to be found in my attic. Without this part my furnace can't be repaired. FAHBP... Read More

On hold with First American Home warranty for the last 30 minutes, before this spoke with three very INCOMPETENT representatives at this company who are trying to explain to me that when a plumber comes to my house to fix a leaking pipe, the plumber is not responsible for access to the pipe as it's not covered by their "warranty", according to these idiots, apparently, I'm responsible for opening the drywall for their plumber and I'm responsible for fixing the drywall. Unheard of!!! And this is the 2nd service call for the same problem, the 1st "plumber" came in, spent about 10 seconds looking at the shower, completely misdiagnosed the problem, told me it's not covered by the home warranty... I have had this warranty for 3 years now. When I first purchased it I thought overall they did a fairly decent job responding to request.as the years have gone by they have progreeively gotten worse. Hold times are in excess of 1 hour to try to speak with someone is nearly impossible.they will not allow the contractor who comes out o fix the problem. Instead they tie his hands and make him diagnose the problem and submit a report to them. Then they take 2-3 business days to decide if they are going to cover the repair it. Took me 3 weeks to get my washing machine repaired. Do yourself a favor and don't deal with these clowns. I am canceling just as soon as my contract expires and signing... Read More

First American Home Buyers Protection borderlines on a criminal business. Their business practices related to filing claims and customer service is deplorable. I am of the opinion they make the process so negative for the consumer, so the consumer will give up on going through the warranty company and seek other means for getting issues resolved in order to decrease the amount of money paid out for claims. The hot water heater stopped function early one morning. I immediately called the home warranty company to begin the claims process. I waited all day and checked the status online and determined a contractor had not been assigned. I called 2 more times that evening to request a... Read More

The pro, every time I needed a repair - it got fixed or replaced. My biggies issue with them is that I had no choice in provider, it could take weeks for someone to come out, every provider that they contracted with had terrible ratings and customer service and didn't seem to care since I had no choice but to use them and any time I would call First American they would say there's nothing they can do since it's already been assigned.

August 10th still no AC and hot as the place the devil lives! About a month ago my AC went out. I contacted First American and they found a contractor to administer the repairs. The unit need a new compressor. About 3 days after the visit from the contractor they got the okay from First American to start the work and the contractor "claimed" they ordered the part, it would be here in three days. Three days came and went no calls or updates from EITHER party. My wife called on day number 4 and the contractor told her that the part had not been shipped yet. The secretary blamed the parts vendor and said she was having it shipped out right away. I seriously doubted the problem was with the... Read More
