Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Thanks to some incredible vets and Healthy Paws, we defeated our golden retriever's urinary issues. There were no case studies to guide treatment of this severe infection which involved a vulvaplasty, bladder surgery, and extensive catheter-based infusions and hospitalization. Only with this level of support could we have seen the return of our cherished family member. Her personality has even returned to its former happy self. Yay!

My now 12.5 year old yorkie has been with Healthy Paws since he was 6. After many horrendous experiences with other companies, I cannot recommend Healthy Paws enough. Their coverage is clear and concise, and I absolutely love their online app that allows me to take a photo of his invoices to be submitted right away. The direct deposit option is also not only extremely convenient, but allows us to be environmentally friendly by saving trees. I work a lot in Canada, and they have been amazing in covering my pup's veterinary bills without any issues. I love them, and have sent many, many of my fellow pawrents there. Thank you Healthy Paws.

Healthy paws has been one of the best decisions that we have made for our dog. Even though the premiums are a bit on the higher end, it has always been super easy to submit claims. The EOB after the claim has been processed, clearly calls out the breakdown and I have never had to go back to customer support on this. We recently got a major surgery (ACL) done for our dog and I submitted the invoice a couple of days after. This was a huge bill and I was nervous on how much I would be getting back (based on the breakdown of the invoice). Surprisingly the majority of the bill was covered by the insurance and money deposited into my account in a few days, there was not even a single follow up... Read More

I paid premiums for my two cats for 3-years without submitting one claim. When they finally needed treatment the claims were rejected without a clear explanation. I was reminded that the insurance does not cover illnesses or conditions that were present before the date of the insurance. This becomes very subjective. It seems that you are very lucky to get anything paid out by Healthy Paws, and I suspect that the entire pet insurance industry works in the same way. You're better off putting $50/month in a jam jar than giving it to this bunch.

Big Arthur - We're sorry that your kitty wasn't feeling well and that we could not provide coverage for your claim. We’re never happy when we have to deny a claim for a client. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records by your veterinarian. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet's medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Unfortunately, we cannot find your account in our system with the information in your review. Since we cannot find your account with the information provided, we don’t want to speculate on why we could not provide coverage. If you’re willing, please send the Administrator of ConsumersAdvocate.org an email with your full name/policy number, along with permission to share that information with us. We can have one of our Customer Liaison Managers look into the issue for you and provide more clarification. Give your kitty a hug for us.

Great company to work with, they seem to really care about our pets and always follow up to make sure my dog is ok if she has had a procedure. I also received a sympathy card from the company when I lost my previous pet.....you don't find many companies that care for their customers the way Healthy Paws does......I am extremely satisfied with their service!

Our elderly lab mix recently had a mass discovered during her annual exam. Although the initial diagnosis was very grim, after further ultrasound and splenectomy, the mass was determined to be benign and she is doing well. She has also had two ACL repairs within the past few years. All has been covered by Healthy Paws, we're very glad we've chosen to have pet insurance, and chose Healthy Paws. Especially after losing two previous dogs to cancer. Claims submittal is easy and online, and processing is usually very quick and efficient. I wish our healthcare system worked this well!

Most amazing and wonderful pet insurance out there. We have had Healthy Paws since our little guy Fisher was a baby and unfortunately he is a pup that suffers from allergies. They helped us with all the allergy testing to help our pup get some relief. The best part is the check in emails they send to see how your baby is doing. Made me feel so thankful.

I cannot begin to properly describe what Healthy Paws has meant for us. Not only have we saved upwards of $12,000 in the past 5 years, we have piece of mind knowing that our beloved pets are covered in emergencies, we don't have to choose life or death. When one of our dogs was diagnosed with cancer and ultimately passed after 10 months, we were given condolences and personal notes. I cannot thank them enough for their care and concern.

I could not disagree more. I've been with healthy paws a little over two years, and my rates have gone up twice. I have not so much as made one claim on my two pets that are on my policy. In other words, I've been paying them quite a bit of money every month, upwards of $80, and they have not covered a single thing. Now, they are raising the rates on all California residents because of the wildfires. What does that have to do with anything? This does not seem like an ethical move! I am looking to leave this company as soon as I can find better coverage for my pets, which will not be too difficult to find. Do not go with this company, you will throw money at them, with little to nothing... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Kathryn - We truly understand that no one likes any form of premium increase. We also know you haven't had to file many claims and we hope you don't have to - that means your pet is happy and healthy. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. In no way are premium increases in California related to the devastating fires people are having to deal with. Your monthly premium has gone up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website.

Healthy Paws is so easy to use, and they responded very quickly after I submitted my claim, even though I expected a delay. They provided a detailed explanation of how my claim was processed, and even sent an email after processing my claim to check in on my dog. I wish all insurance companies operated like Healthy Paws.
