Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has been amazing. My dog needed to have 2 ACL surgeries and they were there every step of the way and the reimbursement checks came in extremely quick. I highly recommend them.

Healthy Paws has been one of the best decisions my wife and I have made. We were originally reluctant in getting insurance for our 2 dogs (English Bulldog and Great Dane/English Mastiff mix). Unfortunately we had to do surgery on both dogs and Healthy Paws was great at reviewing the claim and getting the reimbursement direct deposited into our account. Filing a claim was as easy as using the App, taking a picture of the receipt, and hitting submit. If you are thinking about getting insurance for tour pet I would highly recommend Healthy Paws.

Carlo - Thank you for all the kind words regarding our simple and easy claims and reimbursement process. Although we are sorry to hear that both of your pups have needed major surgeries, however, we are so glad that you were able to provide them both with the best medical care possible. Please give both of your furbabies a big hug from us!

My family and pup, Jax are so fortunate to have Healthy Paws in our lives. My 4 year old, Lab, Jax had recent ACL surgery which would’ve cost us $4700 without insurance. Instead, they covered 80% of the surgery, all his meds which he continues to take and rehabilitation which he will be starting soon! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Healthy Paws!

We researched for a long time before deciding to sign up with Healthy Paws and we couldn’t be happier. Our Bull Terrier needed surgery after swallowing a foreign object (sewing needles !!) and apart from prompt reimbursement they also sent an email checking on how he was doing. Reimbursement is speedy as well. Best decision!!! I highly recommend Healthy Paws

We have been with Healthy Paws for four years. In that time our dog has had two knee surgeries and Healthy Paws covered us and also checked in on how my dog was feeling/doing. Reimbursement is always prompt and the interface is extremely easy for filing claims. I recommend Healthy Paws 100%.

I've been a policy holder for 2 years. I've never had any problems until today. I called to see if my dogs allergy testing was covered. I was told yes. I called back to make sure the medicine would also be covered. Oliver told me he couldn't answer the question. He would put a service request in for a rep to call me in 7 days. I asked to speak to a supervisor. After 50 minutes of being put on hold and being advised that there are no supervisors or managers on hand, he transferred me to Justine. After 10 minutes with her, she finally transferred me to Ed, a service representative who answered my questions in less than 5 minutes. Shame on you Healthy Paws. Train your staff better... Diane, We appreciate you being part of the Healthy Paws family and that we've been able to play a part in your pet's care of the years. We apologize that your recent customer service did not meet yours or our expectations. We have recently rolled out the ability for our pet parents to schedule calls with our team for non-critical issues and it has been a huge success. In your case, we should have routed you to an agent that could have provided immediate assistance as Ed did. We have been proactively adding more customer care staff so that all policyholders can get the their claims and customer care issues resolved as quickly as possible. As with any sort of hiring, there is always a learning curve as colleagues become more confident in both the policy and our internal processes. Even with the frustration you encountered, we're glad that our team could provide you with the needed information. Give your baby a hug for us.

This company that is allegedly the "Best Pet Insurance" is horrible. Essentially, they take your money and cover nothing. Recently, one of our dogs had a diagnostic workup to determine whether she had lymphoma. Needless to say, it was costly. NOTHING was covered. All of the charges were subtracted from the annual deductible, which by the way, starts fresh each year. I wish I could give this company a minus 5 since service is slow, and all they want is your money.

Gary, We’re sorry your pup has to go through all of this and that you’re not satisfied with your policy. There a many pet insurance companies that have annual deductibles and some that even charge a deductible for each new condition. We do our best to be transparent on how our reimbursement calculation works. We include this information (including examples) on our website within our "Frequent Asked Questions" page, and on our "For Customers" page within our website. Our process for calculating reimbursements are approved by each state's Department of Insurance and are based upon the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at enrollment. As with any policy with a deductible, the deductible has to be met before any claim reimbursement is paid. Give your girl a hug for us

Pet health insurance wasn't really a thing when I got my first dog, almost 20 years ago. At the end of his life, he developed a lot of health issues that became extremely expensive... so fast forward years after his passing, we got another dog and I immediately began researching insurance options, before we even brought him home. Healthy Paws came highly recommended and I am so happy that's the insurer we chose. They have are reasonable, responsive, have great customer service, reimburse quickly, and the app is incredibly easy to use. I haven't had to haggle over anything and they've even emailed to check in our guy after he was sick. I am so happy with our decision. It is definitely worth... Read More
