Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Hands down the best coverage you can get for your fur baby! Our poor little frenchie has had two major surgeries in the past 18 months and several other issues with things like allergies and copd. We have submitted A LOT of invoices and statements and have never had an issue with one single item. The only time I’ve received an email in response to his treatment was to say “we’re checking in” and wishing him well. If you’re looking for insurance for your pet, honestly stop your search now and save yourself the time and trouble and signup with healthy paws today!

As pet parents ourselves we know how stressful it can be when our furry friends aren't feeling well. We hope your sweet Frenchie is feeling better after those surgeries. Please give your furball another big hug from us.

We had this insurance for two years and never submitted a claim. My dog had an impact injury and her leg when lame. She had to have surgery. First Healthy Paws denied the claim saying it was preventative so I had the vet write a letter. Then I resubmitted and they said they couldn’t read the PDF invoice from the vet. Then I resubmitted and they said it was a pre-existing condition. Two years later??? My vet even confirmed that it wasn’t and they still denied the claim. They are supposed to process claims in 10 days. This was two months of them denying me sending information to refute their reason and them finding a new one. Do not waste your money. They have loads of bad reviews they try... Read More

Angelica - We are never happy when we have to deny a claim for a client. We appreciate you providing your pet’s medical records and resending when the copies we received were unreadable. Even with today’s technology, there are still issues with fax quality from time to time. We’ve also been helping an unusually large number of sick pets in the last few weeks which caused the delay in your claim processing. We apologize for that delay and have been proactively implementing solutions so this does not happen in the future. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet's medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Since the medical records that were provided to us show the sign/symptoms of the current issue to be pre-existing, we could not cover your claim. I regards to our reviews, our pet parents are passionate about their pets, just like you, which is why we have both positive and negative reviews. We don’t have the ability to manipulate or cover up any review posted by an individual. Our goal is to provide a response based upon the content of the review while adhering to our corporate privacy policy which protects our customers private information. We’re sorry to lose you as a client and hope you and your pet stay well.

My cat got into something in the house while I was away and had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks, and had a stomach tube placed for well over 2 months. If it weren’t for healthy paws, my cat would not be here. The fact that they don’t have a limit played a huge role as well. They paid exactly what they said they were gonna pay, no questions asked. I would not consider any other insurance company.

I am so thankful to have found healthy paws and that I signed up when I did. After months of diagnostic tests, surgery, and physical therapy it was reassuring to know that all of it would be covered. All I had to stress about was getting my pup feeling better, not the cost. In the past I had pet insurance through a company that often fought me on what should be covered or only covered low percentages leaving me questioning the treatment my animals need. With healthy paws they receive all the care they need because I am confident that healthy paws has our back. Submitting a claim takes less than a minute and I receive my reimbursement very quickly. Healthy paws also reaches out to see how... Read More

I can't recommend Healthy Paws enough. When we first shopped around for pet insurance, I read plenty of stories about "scam" policies that don't help when you need it most. Trust me, Healthy Paws isn't one of those companies. When our 6-year old pup suddenly needed dialysis, I called their customer service line to confirm his care would be covered and they assured me they would help. After too many dialysis sessions to count, extensive testing to identify the cause of illness including an unexpected kidney biopsy, and a four week stay at the vet hospital with 24/7 care, they kept their promise and covered 90% of the cost. When we finally took our boy home, they worked directly with... Read More

Thanks to Healthy Paws, we were able to get our dachshund admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment and ivdd surgery without a hassle. There is nothing more stressful or heartbreaking than to be given just two choices from a surgeon: life-saving surgery (if you can afford it) or euthanasia (if you don't have $$$ or insurance). Having much-needed pet insurance allowed us to focus on caring for our dog and to get him the best medical care possible.

I have a 7 year old English Bulldog who has been insured by Healthy Paws from the day we brought him home at 9 weeks. While we've had the good fortune to have a healthy dog, unforeseen health issues do arise and most recently, our sweet boy had a very serious bout with aspiration pneumonia that involved an extended stay with the vet, numerous tests and several medications and follow-up care. Healthy Paws came through for us as they always have. Knowing you have a good pet insurance policy in place when unexpected events like this arise definitely helps keep the stress at a manageable level. Being able to say yes when the doctor presents you with a daunting itemization is invaluable and... Read More
