Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has been hands down amazing. Our 8 year old Vizsla Ruby woke up in the middle of the night on 5/18 and decided to get into the trash. By evening on Sunday it was clear something was really wrong and we took her to the ER vet for xrays. She had an ultrasound first thing Monday morning and went right into emergency surgery for bowel obstruction. They had to cut into her stomach, and remove about 8 inches of her bowel. She was supposed to have a 24 hour recovery at the ER vet post surgery but she just would not bounce back. The surgery looked good but she wouldn't show any interest in eating. She ended up staying at the ER vet for 4 nights and 5 days before we brought her... Read More

When I began searching for insurance for my 11 year old dog (at the time) I didn’t think I would find an affordable plan. Much to my surprise, I came across Healthy Paws and the premium was so affordable I thought it had to be a mistake or perhaps, down the road, I would find they wouldn’t cover much. I was so wrong! Fast forward 2 years. My baby is now 13 and is starting to have much more frequent vet trips, as well as being on daily medication. The plan I chose has a 750.00 deductible yearly, which I spent after a couple visits to the vet. My reimbursement is 60%. I submit my bills to Healthy Paws and I have never had to wait longer than 10 days for reimbursement. Most times it is 3-5... Read More

Last year, our new German Shepherd Scout needed surgery to clear an obstruction (she managed to eat a couple rocks) as a young puppy which cost several thousand dollars out of pocket (and of course all the stress we went through before and during surgery). I figured it was time to look into pet insurance after this, and settled on Healthy Paws after looking at other options due to reviews and what was covered. Over the year various check-ups and medications were submitted (most which counted towards the deductible, and where others were not covered there was a specific reason provided as to why). Fast forward to about a year later, Scout suffered a very bad leg fracture and couldn't... Read More

Healthy Paws is the worst. We have had them over a year and they have NOT covered ONE thing . Hereditary/ genetic conditions / NOPE. Prescription meds - NOPE . Wellness - NOPE . The list goes on. They have “ misplaced “ invoices and Dr notes resulting in having to send these multiple times only to finally , after quite a wait , get denied for everything we have submitted. We canceled. Do yourself a favor and pass on these people.

Joan - We’re sorry that you were not satisfied with your policy and apologize for any issues you had with our claims process. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/wellness care and the office visit fee. Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our "Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions" page. By making preventative/wellness care part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs. Unfortunately, we cannot find your account in our system with any degree of certainty using the limited information in your review. We would really like to provide you with more context as to why your claim was not covered. Without being able to look at your account and the medical records, it’s likely a condition that was pre-existing, which would have excluded coverage for the condition and any prescriptions for it. If you’re willing, please send a message to Consumers Advocate at info@consumersadvocate.org with your full name/policy number and we can have one of our Customer Liaison Managers reach out to you once we get that information. If you would rather call us, please ask the team member that you speak with to have a Customer Liaison Manager speak to you or if they are busy, set a time to give you a call back when it is convenient for your schedule.

Everybody at this wonderful company CARES about your dog and what both of you are going through at a difficult time. They don't just just promptly reimburse every imaginable bill right into your bank account but they send messages of good cheer. I am amazed at their caring outreach even as they are paying thousands of dollars for my girl maisie's medical care...trying to avoid a bad knee becoming an ACL tear...and now through surgery and recovery

Healthy Paws has been a God sent. I can’t say enough good things about them. We got it about six months after we got our pup. My sister’s dog was around 11 and she had a lot of vet bills for her. We thought we would get pet insurance to use when our dog got older. Just before his 2nd birthday we got the devastating news that he had cancer. There were a lot of pathology tests, xrays, and a CT. All of that showed that we need to quickly to remove the tumor. The tumor was in his mouth, so the surgery involved removing some of his mouth and cheek. It was such a stressful time. Everything happened so quickly. After every appointment we would take a picture of the receipt and submit it using the... Read More
