Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I really don’t like Healthy Paws - they put up my premiums without any communication despite no claims - they are impossible to get hold of to discuss the issues and left me on hold for ages - they never email me and dont reply to my emails

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Gina - We’re sorry that your customer service experience did not meet yours or our expectations. We’ve been helping many sick pets in the last couple of weeks and this has temporarily increased our phone hold times and response times to emails. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase and realize this increase was larger than normal. We also know you’ve never filed a claim and we hope that you never have to--this means your pet is healthy and accident free. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Your monthly premium is going up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. In regards to communication around your premium increase, insurance regulations require that we send out a notice to our clients whenever there is a policy change. We emailed you regarding the premium increase 60 days prior to your policy anniversary date, using the email address you chose for your account. If you would like a copy of that email for your records, please contact our customer care team and we’d be happy to send it to you. We hope you and your pet stay well!

Healthy paws pet insurance has been a lifesaver. Not just for my bank account, but more importantly, for my dog Joey. He is a rescue that we’ve had the past 1 1/2 years. As soon as we sprung him from the rescue, we purchased healthy paws insurance just in case there were any issues down the road. Well, fast forward 16 months later, and Joey had to spend 4 days and 3 nights in the vet hospital, as we tried to figure out what was going on. The poor boy had a bacterial infection that went into his bloodstream. This was a grave, life-threatening condition. But the veterinarians did a great job of treating and saving him. Great medical care is not cheap, and I’m so happy healthy paws was... Read More

I have nothing but amazing things to say about Healthy Paws. With 3 dogs, I never considered pet insurance until a friend of mine had an emergency visit that cost thousands of dollars. I wanted to be able to provide my pets with the best possible care, without being restricted by financial limitations. I did my research and Healthy Paws seemed like the best option. Not even 6 months later, one of my dogs tore both of her cruciate ligaments and requires surgery on both legs amounting to over $16,000. It was a lengthy process with multiple surgeries, x-rays and vet visits, but Healthy Paws made it much less stressful. The claims were processed and paid within days. We've had Healthy... Read More

I first got Pet insurance back in 2007 with my first dog, Kacey. Back then it wasn't as good as it is now. Kacey past away in 2016 due to Leukemia, and I adopted Marvin shortly after. He was about 5 or 6, a rescue dog. I researched all the new & different pet insurance companies for days, I finally went with Healthy Paws, they had the best coverage for my needs. And boy has it paid off! Marvin recently spent a few hours at the emergency vet, and subsequently a trip to a neurologist for an MRI. Healthy Paws made the claim process so easy & they covered everything 90% (due to the policy I have, less the office visit charge) & in a very timely manner. They even continue to cover his paid... I’m writing this review to recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance in the highest degree. I have insured two dogs with Healthy Paws, both of whom I was able to get the best possible medical care because of the assurance of having Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Most recently, my dog Eva, a very healthy mix breed had two serious medical issues. This past May, she came down with acute pancreatitis out of the blue (I believe due to tainted treats from Blue Buffalo). She spent a week in emergency care at a veterinary specialist and Healthy Paws handled the claims for her care and follow-up quickly and without question. Based on the insurance plan I have her on, this meant that 90% of the... Read More

I initially purchased pet insurance for my (then) young male cat since I was seeing and hearing about the costs to diagnose and treat urinary blockages. I spent 3 years paying the premiums but never had a dire emergency. That all changed in mid-January when I woke up to find a spool of thread had been unwound and strewn throughout the house. The first 24 hours were fine. My cat, Baker, ate and then, as cats often do, threw up some. Between 24 - 36 hours, he started slowing down, not eating and wanting seclusion. When he vomited a significant amount of brown, smelly intestinal contents, I knew that he was obstructed. I ran him to a 24 hour vet clinic at 10 PM. Baker was promptly seen... Read More

We did quite a bit of research about finding a good insurance for our baby French Bulldog, figuring if we didn’t get it something was bound to happen and if we did then we would be covered. Beyond glad we chose Healthy Paws as our pup took a tumble at doggy daycare and fractured his elbow about a week ago and racked up huge vet bills. We submitted the claims via the Healthy Paws app and were reimbursed within the week! We couldn’t be happier with the quick turnaround, customer support when we called with questions and the follow up of the team. Most importantly, they saved us over $4,000 in out of pocket expenses. Very glad we chose Healthy Paws!

I have been a customer of Healthy Paws for over 5 years now. I've had two of my pets covered with Healthy Paws within that time. I've never experienced huge increases in premiums with my first pet's insurance. She was covered for nearly 4 years, but that pet has since passed. Currently, I only have one pet covered since Jan 2016 with a premium of $39.72/month. After one year it increased slightly to $43.70/month, which is reasonable. However, the next year it jumped to $54.18/month, and they just raised it again to $67.81/month this year. These are substantial increases, which they justify as increased cost of vet care. They really put pet owners in a bind and forcing them to choose... Read More

S - We appreciate you being part of the Healthy Paws family and glad we've been able to provide coverage for your pets claims over the years. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase and realize this increase was larger than normal. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. We have seen an increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians. These are some examples of procedures performed during the last 12 months that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000. Your monthly premium is going up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state. I just want to say that I could not be more pleased with Healthy Paws and how easy it to file claims and receive reimbursements. Our German Shepherd was diagnosed with a potentially life threatening fungal infection and required thousands of dollars worth of treatment and medications. I am not in great financial shape right now so to be able to focus on my dog and not have to worry much about the financial side of treatment is such a blessing. Getting Healthy Paws insurance was a great decision and I would never own a pet again without this insurance. I have been telling my friends and family about Healthy Paws and highly recommending getting pet insurance through them.

Our relationship with Healthy Paws has been beneficial, stress free, and delightful since Day 1. Submitting our cats' veterinary invoices is a quick and easy process via iPad, cell phone, laptop, or desktop and scanner. The reimbursement checks seem to arrive before we've powered down our devices and Healthy Paws is very quick to communicate the status of our claim so we always know what's up.
