Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Considering the few benefit limits Healthy Paws imposes and the company's customizable payout percentages and deductibles, Healthy Paws plans are reasonably priced and even cheaper than less substantial plans.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

When looking for health insurance for my two new puppies I looked at all the options. When I contacted Healthy Paws with some questions they were very helpful and answered all my questions. I liked the ease of the signup process and the usability of their phone app. It was not until a year later that I needed to actually use the insurance and when that time came I was pleased to find that the upload process and claim process was so easy. I uploaded the records that I received from my Vet and then snapped a picture of the bills and in a week Healthy Paws had reviewed all the records and reimbursed me for the covered procedure. My Dog ended up having bone cancer and lost her leg.... Read More

Getting a Healthy Paws policy for my German shepherd, Gus, is one of the best decisions I've ever made! Customer service is fantastic. It's so easy to file claims through the app and they are very prompt and communicative. Thank you, Healthy Paws!

Dear Healthy Paws: Thanks so much for checking in on Walter. He is doing so much better. Last year, at about this time, he could barely walk. Now, he’s moving right along. I was thinking, just this morning, that without Healthy Paws I wouldn’t be able to provide him with this life-changing care. Walter means everything to me, and we thank you from the bottoms of our hearts. Over the years, I’ve recommended Healthy Paws to every dog-owner friend, and to strangers too. So many of my friends have signed up with you, and all are pleased. Love, Lisa & Walter

My wife and I were recently Healthy Paws customers until we suddenly lost our mastiff. Losing our dog was a significant tragedy and while that can't be changed, the stress of that could have been so much worse. She had significant hospital bills which were terrifying to rack up. On multiple occasions, we have had to file large claims and each time, they were reimbursed without argument. We cannot tell you how grateful we are for that. Additionally, a couple of weeks after our loss, we received a card signed by the team at Healthy Paws. It was very touching. I don't know when we'll get another dog but when we do, we will for sure be insuring them through Healthy Paws as well as... Read More

I can't say enough positive things about Healthy Paws. I first purchased insurance when my boy Teddy was a puppy, and I'm thankful every day that I did. I carry the maximum level of insurance (90% coverage after a $200 annual deductible) on Teddy and it's worth every penny. The first year of Teddy's life we were at the vet every 2 weeks for chronic skin issues, & more than one emergency visit when he's ingested things that he shouldn't have. We have spent thousands of dollars over the last couple years on procedures, medications, and skin related medical care and the majority of that money spent has been refunded by Healthy Paws (90% to be exact!). His most recent issue was an ER Vet... Read More

This company needs to fix its customer service badly. The website freezes your computer when you try to do a simple task like changing a credit card number. And the phone number for customer service is poorly staffed with unacceptable wait times.

Healthy Paws is the best insurance choice we made for our little boy. He at 7 months suddenly needed surgery and the team at Healthy Paws were incredible, they went above and beyond to make the payment seamless. They even authorized us for direct payment and all we had to pay was our part. They were always reachable and the customer service was excellent. They even followed up with us after to know how our boy was recovering. What more can you ask for. Thank you Healthy Paws.

I have two labs and enrolled them in Healthy Paws about two years ago after being urged by a fellow dog owner. My oldest, a chocolate has had health issues for most of his life, however, nothing life threatening. Realizing the high cost of specialized veterinary care and upon referral from a friend whom had a near catastrophic illness experience with her lab which could have easily wiped her out financially, I made the wise investment in enrolling my two dogs with Healthy Paws. Recently, my oldest dog became terribly ill and would not eat. Our family vet indicated that his symptoms were beyond their practice and would have to take him to an Emergency Vet offering advanced care.... Read More

As a pet parent, you never want to see your pet (baby) sick or injured. Recently, I experienced a life threatening bacterial infection which had the potential for a fatal outcome without critical care hospitalization and 24 hour care. Iggy was in the hospital for 11 days. From the beginning, I worked with the Veterinary Hospital, telling them I had Healthy Paws pet insurance. Thank Dog for Healthy Paws. I was able to focus on Iggy's care and treatment versus worrying about the hospital bill and if I would be able to afford care. Healthy Paws with my permission, direct payed the Veterinary Hospital. Everyone at Healthy Paws are rooting for Iggy and showed me that they truly care... Read More

I am very pleased with HealthyPaws as the insurance carrier for my Frenchie. My boy has had a decently long list of health issues. Being a bulldog is not easy as they come with many issues. My boy had various surgeries and treatments. HealthyPaws been there the whole time and covered him. Having this security is helping me greatly to reduce my stress level as well. HealthyPaws is highly recommended and has a great team of caring and supportive personnel on the phone and filing the claims online is a breeze as well. HealthyPaws is the way to go for insurance.
