Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Janelle and Nicky helped me with my claim. My dog unexpectedly needed orthopedic surgery due to a crucial ligament break. Surgery cost over $4,000 and healthy paws helped me cover more than half of the cost. I paid a $200 deductible and 20% of the bill because that's the plan i chose. Talking to Janelle and Nicky it was warming how much they truly care and they talked to me as friends they cared about how she did from surgery. I got reimbursed direct deposit a week after my claim. It was easy doing it through the app. I am thankful I have insurance for my dog and I am satisfied with the service I have received.

Healthy Paws has pushed my claim/reimbursement out weeks. I have been without money, gas, food for my dog and I for over a week already and have no idea when I will see any money.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
JT, We received your claim the middle of the week of 11/5 and it was processed the beginning of last week. Your reimbursement via direct deposit was also initiated the beginning of last week. It can take 3-5 business days for the funds to reach your bank account, so you should see it any day now. We’re sorry that you’re having financial issues and hope you and your dog stay well.

I've been extremely happy with Healthy Paws. My dog had a chronic injury that required physical therapy (though fortunately not surgery) and Healthy Paws made it possible to deal with the issue as soon as possible, rather than waiting and possibly allowing the injury to get worse. My only complaint is that the deductible is calculated at a discounted rate equal to your reimbursement rate, which wasn't clear to me when I signed up. Even so, the insurance has more than paid for itself and been extremely easy to use, even after moving across the country and changing vets several times.

Seriously! The best pet insurance ever! They make it so EASY! The last thing you want to have to worry about is jumping through hoops when you’re dealing with a medical emergency for your fur baby. The best part about healthy paws is that they actually care! Not only were they there for us every step of the way, they actually reached out to see how our pup was doing! I’m not talking about some generic computer generated email... an associate actually reached out! I couldn’t believe it. We Love you guys!!

My dog is a much happier, healthier pup thanks to Health Paws; if we hadn't insured her through them, I doubt we could have paid for the heart condition she has developed (~$1.5k a year), which necessitated the removal of a diseased tooth that was exacerbating the issue (~$3k), and which complicated the surgery she needed for her rotator cuff (~$10k). Healthy Paws covered a total of almost $15,000 for us in this year alone, and I couldn't be more relieved that we chose to insure her as soon as we adopted her. HP's online claim system and direct-deposit reimbursement make them easy to work with, and when I've called to get assistance with things like medical paperwork, the person I spoke... Read More

When my little franchise started having gait issues at only 8 years old I took him to have all the tests run and found he had a ruptured disc in his back. Thanks to healthy paws I was able to get my boy the surgery he needed to live life to the fullest. The claim is just take a picture and then receive the check. They are the best.

I am so happy to have gotten my dogs insurace through Healthy Paws. My wonderful lab is only 2 1/2, and unfortunately, she developed a serious ear infection that her regular vet could not cure. She had to be seen by a specialist, and had to be sedated for proper treatment. Just the antibiotics alone she had to be given were $600.00. When I called Healthy Paws to see if they would approve them, they assured me everything was covered and that she would never be dropped. Customer service is wonderful to deal with, they even reached out to me to see how she was doing. You always hope your pet won’t need the insurance, but things happen, and I am so grateful for Healthy Paws. They certainly... Read More

Amazing customer service and super simple claim process (just snap a picture!). They’ve covered surgeries for both our dogs AND all the medicine needed for pain management on-going. HIGHLY recommend.

Having had animals for years I fully appreciate having pet insurance. Thus, in 2013, after adopting a couple of kittens I started shopping for pet insurance. I came across HealthyPaws, did my research and decided to give them a try. Premiums were reasonable. A few years later one of the kitties died accidentally. HealthyPaws sent me a sympathy card, hand signed by the employees. At about the same time my remaining cat started developing chronic UTIs and skin infections, necessitating treatment every 2 months. I submitted claims to HealthyPaws, via an in-phone app and was pleasantly surprised how eassy the whole process was, time and again. The claims were adjusted within hours and the... Read More

I did quite a bit of research and chose Healthy Paws Insurance because they had very comprehensive coverage for a good price. You hope you will never have to use it but unfortunately we did. Recently, our dog had to go to the emergency vet. Over several days he had to have a lot of expensive tests run and Healthy Paws came through by paying everything that was covered under our policy and paying quickly. If it weren't for Healthy Paws, we would never have been able to afford this level of care for our dog. I have been recommending Healthy Paws to everyone I know ever since.
