Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Cost - 4 / 5

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I would give an infinite amount of stars if I could. I love Healthy Paws. My dog has been very accident prone since day 1. He got hit by a car and had to be hospitalized with pneumonia and kennel cough even before he was 2. He spent 4 days in the hospital and it would have cost my an extreme amount of money if I didn't have healthy paws. Just recently he had to have surgery to repair his ACL, again which was going to be expensive. I called to make sure it was covered and knowing that it was covered it gave me a complete peace of mind. Submitted his hospital bill and it was approved very quickly. I would recommend Health Paws to anyone. They have awesome employees who are so fun to... Read More

My dog had to have emergency surgery that was both unexpected and very expensive. Healthy Paws provided my reimbursement VERY quickly and made the process VERY easy. We're feeling very good about our decision to get insurance with Healthy Paws.

I made a joke the other day about wanting to quit my job and go work at HealthyPaws because my experience with them has been unlike anything I've had with any other company before. Let me tell you about my dog, Maddie. She's only a bit over a year old and she's the happiest, most loving, silly dog I've ever known. She was fully vaccinated; never even a single day late for a shot or a booster. She spoiled rotten and I take every step possible to make sure she is healthy and being taken care of. I noticed she wasn't feeling well so ended up at our regular vet 3 days in a row doing X-rays, ultrasounds and ultimately just getting meds to treat what we suspected to be just a bad upset... We decided to try Healthy Paws in December, 2015, when we adopted a rescue dog who had lost her left front leg in a tragic mauling. Since we adopted her, she has been diagnosed with a couple of serious ailments--inflammatory bowel disease and, more recently, encephalitis. Healthy Paws' superior coverage has enabled us to give her the treatment and monitoring she needs, and she is thriving, despite her challenges. We have had other pet insurance coverage, but none has surpassed the friendly service and prompt reimbursement Healthy Paws provides. They have won our loyalty as serial rescuers.

When selecting which pet insurance to purchase, I selected Healthy Paws because of its high rating not really ever thinking that I’d need it. Thank goodness I did! One of my cats has had 3 urinary blockages (which can be life threatening to cats) in the past 12 months and finally needed an extensive surgery to prevent future blockages. Submitting my claims were super easy on my phone app. Healthy Paws processed all my claims expeditiously with no issues. Healthy Paws played a crucial role in alleviating the stress of caring for my fur baby. Healthy Paws made it possible for me to concentrate on providing the appropriate medical care and recovery for my cat. Best pet insurance... Read More

This is one amazing insurance company. Typically speaking, the bottom line of an insurance company is to mitigate their losses as best as possible while providing the bare minimum service needed to stay in business. You absolutely do not get that with Healthy Paws. They make sure your claims are paid in full and within a very quick reimbursement turnaround period. I have never waited more than 24 hours to get confirmation of my reimbursement for any covered medical costs. In addition to making sure I have the financial means to keep my animal family healthy, they take a personal interest in making sure both my animals and I are doing okay. For example, my dog was diagnosed with a... Read More

I have had pet insurance policies with 3 other companies and can say that Healthy Paws has BY FAR the best customer service and fastest claim processing of all of them. I have had 2 dogs with cancer, one with an eye injury and a fourth who required a splenectomy and have not had to jump through hoops one time to get a claim processed or been hit with a significant premium increase or had my coverage being changed (reduced) due to a carrier change as I have with other companies. They are definitely worthy of their high ratings!

Healthy Paws is fantastic. I have covered my dogs with pet insurance for many years, including two other insurance companies. Healthy Paws is by far the best. My Dobe has two unforeseen surgeries in the past couple of weeks and Heathy Paws is incredible. The claim process is simple and their explanations easy to understand. They do not try to “weasel out “ of coverage with loopholes and legalese. The payments are quickly made via direct deposit. Thanks to Healthy Paws I have been able to concentrate on getting Lexie the care she needs and not on how to pay!

Coverage is exactly as described in our plan. Claims have been taken care of promptly and their customer service has been great (I’d called in several times to confirm I understood certain aspects of our plan’s policy). So far, so good.

I have an 11 month old Shar Pei that has had some medical issues. Cherry eye x2, tummy issues, and entropian surgery. Im so thankful we have insurance for our baby girl. Healthy paws app is great. You take a picture of the vet bill, upload it to the app and within days reimbursement straight to my account. Healthy paws staff also always check in on my baby whenever we submit a claim which is very comforting. I did alot of research when I was looking into purchasing health insurance and healthy paws was the best out there. If you are thinking about buying insurance look no further. This is the company for you.
