Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I decided to get pet insurance after adopting a three-month-old puppy, getting coverage for both my puppy and my ten-year-old dog. I chose Healthy Paws based on recommendations from fellow volunteers at the local shelter. My puppy is now 2 1/2 and has had various bouts of lameness. Three weeks ago, he finally had double TPLO surgery. A week ago, Healthy Paws sent me a note asking how he was doing in recovery, and a day or two later, the reimbursement check came in the mail. My vote? Put Healthy Paws in charge of human health insurance. When was the last time your health insurance company checked up on you after major surgery? They make it easy to make a claim, the coverage... Read More

When we first purchased pet insurance, we prayed we would never have to use it. We realize that this is a business relationship and that we send premiums every month for our insurance on Ozzie and Oscar, but the ease and expediency with which this company responds, the no-hassle reimbursements and coverage, the concern and personal attention they give us is beyond all expectations. The service we have experienced with Healthy Paws is a forgotten courtesy for most companies and takes us back to a time when business was conducted with a smile and honest-to-goodness sincerity. Thank you, everyone at Healthy Paws, for making an otherwise troubling time so much easier to accept.

I don’t normally write reviews but I am so happy with Healthy Paws I felt the need to. I have submitted SO many claims for my dog and Healthy Paws has handled them all just the way they promised. My original reason for getting health insurance was for major events like surgery (which my dog has had to have twice for growth removals), but now that he’s older with more issues his medication is covered as well. His blood work (which he gets twice a year), x-rays, and ultrasound were covered with no issues. They also cover monthly laser treatment for his arthritis. The best part is I never have to worry about if he’s getting the best care because with Healthy Paws I can afford whatever he needs!

My wife and I are very impressed with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. Claims are very easy to submit online, with no lengthy forms to fill out, and claims are paid quickly with no quibbling. Our dog recently had expensive cancer surgery. It only took me a few minutes to submit the claim online, and the claim was processed and completed the same day! Shortly after that, the reimbursement was directly deposited into my checking account. I wish my own health insurance was as quick and easy to use as our dog's Healthy Paws insurance!

To be honest, I wasn’t very pleased and actually regretted getting pet insurance for my 3 year old French bulldog. He had pre-existing allergies and absolutely nothing was being covered. I was spending a pretty decent amount in fees every month (which was going up every year) and I highly considered canceling the insurance. Well, fast forward two years later, Healthy Paws has covered not one but TWO back surgeries for my poor French Bulldog who had been diagnosed with IVDD! Not only did they cover the surgery itself, but they also covered the MRI, intensive care, hospital stay and all the shots/medications. I cannot thank them enough for their assistance in my poor pup’s hard times. I... Read More

For years, I tried to determine whether pet insurance was worth it and if so, which company to go with. And, now, I'm singing from the mountain tops that Healthy Paws is one of the best decisions I've ever made! For the last 2.5 years, we've been overjoyed with their customer service, responsiveness and ease of submitting claims. Even our old dog has sterling coverage that just recently saved his life as he was in and out of the hospital. Today, he is curled up at my feet snoring thanks to Healthy Paws. I cannot say enough good things about this company; they truly prioritize your furry family above all else.

If it weren't for HealthyPaws, our boy wouldn't be alive today. My husband and I pay a little over $40 a month to cover our two cats. Last week, we had to rush our little boy to the ER when he became extremely lethargic. It turned out he was going into liver failure and they had to keep him hospitalized for four days. He developed diabetes and an intestinal and gall bladder infection and so we then also had to get him multiple medications, insulin and a feeding tube to help him get better. The final cost was over $5,000 and HealthyPaws helped cover it all. My husband and I are graduate students and would absolutely have not been able to afford it and would have either had to give him up or... Read More

Healthy paws is a top notch company and came through when our dog Mabel ate a squeaker toy. My wife and I are so relieved that she’s safe and happy. Healthy paws has got us through the whole ordeal taking the cost of any medical procedure to help her out of the equation. We were able to make sure she got the best possible care. Paid the claims fast and it’s cut and dry with no confusion for the consumer. Thank you!

I cannot say enough good things about healthypaws. My dog is diabetic and they cover EVERYTHING, including needles and blood glucose curve. They even pay for Dasuquin, a supplement for joint health because he had knee surgery in the past. They paid for the surgery and more than 20 rehab visits. Recently, I spent more than 5K on cataract surgery, a result of his diabetes. The money was direct deposited in my account within days. All I need to do is upload a pic of the invoice via their app, done. I have literally saved thousands with healthypaws. And the best thing is that I never have to worry if I can pay for my best friend’s care. And you can’t put a price tag on that. Thank you... Read More
