Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Hello, my dog is 9.5 years old and I've had pet insurance on him since the age of 2. To be honest up until about 8 years old I never used it as I never had a reason as my dog has always been a healthy boy. Though in the last 18 months it's been utilized multiple times. He has run into some health concerns and having the pet insurance truly makes having the appropriate care a reality. Just in the last month with blood tests, ultra sounds, CT scans and other diagnostics the vet bills have totaled $3200 in 4 weeks. The pet insurance plan I have with Healthy Paws is a 90/10 plan, so of that $3200 I have had to only cover a little over $300 out of my own pocket. I've been with Healthy Paws... Read More

My 8 year old black lab has been insured by Healthy Paws since he was 5 years old. He had some neck and back issues last year and his chiropractic appointments were covered! In May of this year I noticed a growth in his mouth. It turned out to be cancer, melanoma. He has had 3 surgeries and is currently under the continuing care of Cornell Oncology. Healthy Paws has been absolutely wonderful throughout this entire ordeal. Their customer service is excellent, the claims are processed really quickly, they keep you updated while you wait, and once the claim is approved reimbursement comes in the mail. I am a practicing small animal veterinarian in Syracuse, NY. I have pet insurance for my... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Cheryl - Our management team works hard to keep your premiums as low as possible, but there continues to be an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians. Due to the increasing cost of new technology and advances in veterinary care, rates were adjusted. These increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding our premium increases by including this information within the “Frequently Asked Questions” page on our website. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase, but our competitors premiums are historically higher overall than your premium with Healthy Paws. We’d be more than happy to send you comparisons from the other leading pet insurance companies based on what your pet’s current deductible/reimbursement levels are. Just contact our customer care team and ask to have a price comparison emailed to you. Give your babies big hugs for us!

Fantastic company with prompt reimbursement within a week. I have had to file 2 claims so far and all I had to do was send a photo of the bills. So happy I chose Healthy Paws I recommend them to everyone. You will not be disappointed.

Our family's four-legged members have been insured by Healthy Paws for several years and I can honestly say that I wish our human family members' health insurance company showed the same level of support and compassion as Healthy Paws when we faced expensive and challenging health crises. Healthy Paws is an incredible client-centered company! Claims are as easy to submit as taking a picture of the veterinarian's receipt with the Healthy Paws App and within about ten days the reimbursement direct-deposits into my checking account. Healthy Paws even sends confirmation emails upon their receipt of the receipt photo and sends ongoing updates as the claim moves through the approval... Read More

Healthy Paws is the best pet insurance on the market! They offer wonderful, unlimited policies and their claim processing is very fast and easy! I am so thankful for Healthy Paws. Our furbabies have suffered some urgent emergency medical situations and Healthy Paws has never let us down! Our three babies are now nine years old and they are going strong, thanks in large part to Healthy Paws Pet Insurance!

Their comprehensive plan was a God-send for us when our less-than-5-yrs- old Bernese Mountain Dog was diagnosed with lymphoma. We hit the $500 deductible with the bill from the first vet visit and were then reimbursed for 80% of all covered charges after that! Claims can be filed electronically and it takes literally only 5 minutes to upload the vet invoice and records to submit a claim. We received all of our claim reimbursements by direct deposit within 10 days of submitting the claim! Our vet bills for cancer treatment for our 90 lb. dog approached $7,000. We would not have been able to get her any treatment at all if we did not have this insurance. Healthy Paws is the best!

I spent some time researching the right insurance company for my pug. I am glad Healthy Paws was high on the list. They have been great from the first claim filed. I would definitely recommend them to all pet owners.

I adopted a Maine coon kitten from a reputable breeder, and insured him through healthy paws. To my surprise, he came down with a severe case of pancreatitis along with several other things at the young age of two and I was devastated. My Healthy paws insurance allowed me to provide him with the absolute best healthcare available without having to worry about finances on top of the stress of my poor cat. The process was quick and simple and I got my money back within 10 days. It was by far the best decision I have ever made and I would recommend insuring every pet you own with healthy paws. I have gone through other pet insurance companies before who have a ton of fine print and only cover... Read More
