Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance deserves the highest rating possible. Our pet, Truman, is a 16 year old Dachshund/Chihuahua/Beagle mix. His health took a dive in January; we have had to take him for many expansive and expensive tests over many months to actually learn what was wrong. He was finally diagnosed with an aggressive Melanoma . He was operated on 2 weeks ago and his prognosis is good; all the cancer was removed and he just has to take (expensive) anti-Melanoma injections over a short time period to keep the cancer at bay. Truman is back to himself and is active, eating and loving! But this journey with him was very expensive. Healthy Paws has been with us throughout... Read More

After 6 dogs in our family over the last 30 years we decided on our newest pup, Ellie, a golden retriever, to research and purchase pet insurance. I must say I looked into approx. 8 different companies and compared... Healthy Paws was my ultimate choice and I am so glad I chose them. At approx. 4 months our pup had a bowel obstruction that required hospitalization and the price was equal to any human hospital stay. Healthy Paws was easy to submit a claim, they contacted me at the time of receipt of my paperwork and within 10 days I have a check for 80% of my covered expenses. They were outstanding from start to finish. They even sent me a very sweet note checking on the health of my... Read More

Yes, Healthy paws did reimburse my pets medical bill in full and immediately as promised. They state that your rates will never be increased for filing a claim. HOWEVER, the raise their rates on you every single year and this year my RATE INCREASE is 37.756%. Consider this carefully before you commit to a life time of increasing medical rates. I feel that a 37.756% is EXTORTION.

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
V. Hayes - We understand this increase was larger than normal, but there continues to be an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000 in cost. Due to these increasing costs of new technology and advances in veterinary care, rates were adjusted. These increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims or for a pet having pre-existing conditions. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "frequently Asked Questions" page of our website We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase not matter how much it is, but our competitors premiums are historically higher overall than your premium with Healthy Paws. We’d be more than happy to send you these comparisons from the other leading pet insurance companies based on what your current deductible and reimbursement level. Just contact our customer care team and ask to have a price comparison emailed to you.

Henry tore his CCL and Meniscus. The surgery was $3,700. Healthy Paws covered $3,300. With this peace of mind in your pocket, you can concentrate on getting the best care for your pet. They even checked in to see how he was doing. Love this company. You will too.

Skoobz is recovering very well. So far he has not put his leg down but the doctor said that will take time. We are hoping for a complete recovery but time will tell. Thank you so much for checking on Skoobz. I have been so impressed with your company. The ease and speed of the claims process has been remarkable! If only humans had it so good! Thanks again!! I cannot say enough good about Healthy Paws. Our dog recently had surgery to remove a tumor. Between surgery, scans, and post-op care, the cost is well over $10,000. But Healthy Paws has paid 90% of it! They have reimbursed us quickly and without hesitation. And they even have checked in just to see how our dog is feeling! They clearly care about animals.

We have four dogs covered by healthy paws, and couldn't be happier. Healthy paws has been there with excellent coverage over the years through the little stuff as well as the huge stuff like multiple surgeries to remove tumors, chemotherapy, and a torn ACL repair. Knowing our dogs have such good coverage lets us focus on getting/keeping our dogs healthy without the added stress of worrying about the cost of doing so. Because of our experience, I literally advise everyone I know who adopts a new pet to sign them up for healthy paws insurance right away.

My dog Baxter has been in and out of hospital s to find out what was wrong him. We finally found out it was a ruptured disc in his neck but without the help of Heathy Paws there would have been no way we could have afforded the surgery.... Thank you Healthy Paws

Healthy Paws is AMAZING. They have never failed to cover EXACTLY what they promise to cover on even very large claims. I honestly never thought that an insurance company would make me happy, but Healthy Paws are a delight to work with.

I signed up for Healthy Paws after my dog tore her ACL and I realized that I would have a hard time affording care if something like that happened again. I hoped that I would not have to use them, but unfortunately, three years later my dog started having severe stomach problems. The first claim took a few weeks to determine coverage as they needed to review her charts but after that, they are quick to review a claim and determine coverage: it usually takes less than a week. After that, they turn around payment quickly. Using the app makes it incredibly easy to submit claims and they email me a clear, easy to understand explanation of benefits once they've evaluated the claim. I love the... Read More
