Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I invested in pet insurance for the first time. G before hand I reviewed some consumer ratings and decided on Healthy Paws. I couldn’t be happier. The price is reasonable and it was super simple to file claims from the app on my phone. They kept me updated regarding the status of my claim and the refund due came quickly. I would highly recommend this pet insurance.

We have two Frenchies and both have been insured with Healthy Paws since they were puppies. I compared Healthy Paws to two other pet insurance policies and a couple things I preferred about Healthy Paws is there is an unlimited lifetime benefit and no breed-specific exclusions. Some years the policy pays for itself and some years it does not. But the expense of the policy is worth it. Recently one of our Frenchies suddenly could not walk. After admitting her to the hospital, I called Healthy Paws and they were compassionate and understanding and reassured me that the policy would cover the services. The bills totaled over $6,000 and a week later I received a check for 90% of the... Read More

We did a lot of research before purchasing a Pet Insurance policy and landed on Healthy Paws due to many great reviews and testimonials. After four years, we can say with certainty that there is absolutely no other policy out there that comes close to Healthy Paws. This is truly the pet-first policy and has proven multiple times that it stands with pets and their owners. We recently had a series of health issues with our dog, including a major surgery and approximately $8,000 in medical bills. The claims process was extremely easy, convenient, and there was no argument about any charges. Healthy Paws distributed claims and money from start to finish in about a week, truly fast and... I just wanted to leave a review of Healthy Paws and my experience. I am pleased to say they have exceeded my expectations. I have had many pets in the past and this is the first time I have purchased pet insurance. After a lot of research I decided to go with Healthy Paws. When we got our new Rottweiler puppy, who knew then that 12 months later she would be having doggie ACL repair surgery. So at 15 months, Carolina goes in to have surgery and I pay upfront with the "hopes" that Healthy Paws will reimburse me as stated in the contract. I am pleased to say they have exceeded my expectations. I have submitted my claims within 3 days of each visit or surgery and I have been reimbursed... Read More

Healthy Paws is the best and your pet needs them (so do you). They genuinely care about my cat and my needs. I called a few times after I submitted my first claim to ask some questions. Each representative I talked to was kind and concerned about my cat. They also were very knowledgeable and helped me get the answers I needed. They even follow up to ask how my cat is doing after my claims have been processed. The claims are processed very quickly. I wish human health insurance companies cared as much as they do.

ABSOLUTEY HORRIBLE!!! STAY AWAY!!! ABSURD PREMIUM INCREASES!!! As a small business owner, I never write bad reviews and always give companies the benefit of the doubt because I understand how hard service businesses are and how damaging poor reviews can be. However, what I have just experienced was so bad, this review needed to be done to help and warm other pet parents. My dog has been insured with Healthy Paws since August 2016. Luckily, no major claims of any kind, just some tests and meds for a stomach bug. Out of the blue, I get what starts out to be a friendly ‘upcoming anniversary’ email that turns into a premium increase notice. I get it, insurance premiums almost always notch up... Read More

Customer Care of Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Nick - we understand this increase was larger than normal, but there continues to be an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000 in cost. Due to these increasing costs of new technology and advances in veterinary care, rates were adjusted. These increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our website. We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase no matter how much it is, but our competitors premiums are anywhere from 24% to 126% higher overall than your premium with Healthy Paws. We’d be more than happy to send you these comparisons from the other leading pet insurance companies based on your current deductible and reimbursement level. Just contact our customer care team and ask to have the price comparison emailed to you.

I’d like to say thank you to Healthy Paws for how simple the process was with my dog Maverick’s claim. This was the first significant claim we’ve had to submit for Maverick, and given the fact that they’re an insurance company, we were fully expecting to have to go twelve rounds to get reimbursed, but that wasn’t the case at all. We even picked a cheaper vet to get the surgery at, two hours away from where we live, just in case we were given the stiff arm. Everything was super easy though. The process for submitting the claim took all of two minutes on my phone and I was notified within a couple days that the claim was approved. It was nice being able to focus on Maverick’s recovery versus... Read More

Absolutely amazing! Our dog had an unexpected trip to the emergency vet. The staff at Healthy Paws was incredibly nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. I was so worried about my girl since she was at the emergency vet for 4 days 3 nights and the staff walked me through the process of filing my claim and assisting me wth everything. One of the best customer service experiences I have had! Very happy and will continue now and in the future to get insurance through them.
