Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

Healthy Paws has proved to me why they are rated the #1 pet insurance! I have a 9 year old lab/pit mix that faced a gnarly gastro infection which ended up being diagnosed as pancreatitis. It was a really emotionally exhausting week and a half of him spending every day at the vet. Healthy Paws made worrying about the blow to my bank account the last thing on my mind allowing me to focus on the care Mister needed to get him back on his feet. When all was said and done Misters bills were over $3,000 and thanks to Healthy Paws I only had to cove 20% of that. They were not only quick to process, approve and reimburse the claims but even reached out via email to check in on him. There's no other... Read More

Unbelievably good service! My dog has had a rough year after being hit by a car and then (unrelated) tearing her ACL. Both required surgery. HealthyPaws immediately reimbursed me for all medical treatment with no questions asked. They then followed up with a personal email to ask how the dog was doing after both surgeries. I wish human health insurance was this good!!

It is really rare for me to have such a flawless experience with insurance companies but HealthyPaws is exceptional. It does not matter if you or your little friend gets sick, the outcome is almost always a very large bill. My lovely cat has gone through some unfortunate moments and we didn't have to be worried about the costs but instead utilized all our energy for her getting well. I am totally grateful to them.

This company went above and beyond my expectations when it came to caring for my little dog. He needed an expensive surgery on his back and they called the vet and authorized everything he needed to get him on the road to recovery. I can’t say enough good things about Healthy Paws when it comes to getting you the care your pet needs.

Easy to submit claims and quick payments for reimbursement. Or dog had TPLO surgery and healthy paws helped make the surgery an affordable option to get our pooch back to normal again. After we submitted our claim they followed up a few wins later to make sure he was doing well. We really appreciated the care and follow up.

We have been with Healthy Paws for 7 years now. We have 2 little Min Pins. This insurance is absolutely wonderful coverage. One of our Pins began having high liver enzymes and mystery pain. I took her to several different Veterinarians over the past 4 years including several emergency room visits. I finally got a diagnosis of what her problem actually is. She has pancreatitis. Healthy Paws has covered her through all of her treatments along the way. I highly recommend Healthy Paws. Each of my claims has been paid more than timely. My dogs will stay with this coverage forever.

Healthy Paws has been my dog's guardian angel. Without their assistance I would not have been able to afford the care he has needed. I do my best to provide a healthy lifestyle and keep him at optimal weight but it's the unpredictable incidences that make Healthy Paws a God send! Claims are so easy to file and they keep me posted of their review process, plus reimbursement is prompt. Whenever I've needed to speak with them directly, they are easy to reach and everyone has been courteous and more than helpful. I would recommend Healthy Paws to my friends, and I do!

Oakley, my 65 pound lab mix, had an unfortunate condition called patella luxation in both knees that he was diagnosed with when he was 1. Although it's not a completely uncommon condition, its pretty unusual in larger dogs. The vet explained if Oakley did not have the surgery, due to his size, he would be quite miserable when he got older as he would develop arthritis, likely be bow-legged and his knees might slip out of their grooves permanently. I was forewarned the cost of the surgery, hospitalization, medications, X-Rays, exams, IV's, etc. would total about $3,000 per surgery. Since he was covered through Healthy Paws, having the surgeries was a no brainer. I had already chosen... Read More

Healthy Paws is awesome. My sweet puppy was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to have his leg amputated. Healthy Paws' process was easy and quick. I was able to submit all paper work online and received reimbursement within 7 days! There was no hassle and no fuss. They even sent an email to check up on my puppy after everything was done. Couldn't recommend Healthy Paws enough. Best insurance company!

I am a certified dog trainer. I've researched all the pet insurance companies. While this doesn't pay for routine visits, it is by far the best. The main reason I got this was in case we were faced with a huge bill which usually means diagnostic tests and lab work. I chose the $250 deductible and 90% coverage. One difference is it's not per incident. The $250 deductible is for everything that may come up in a year. I have a friend with another big name pet insurance who has $250 but it's for each item. His dog hurt his leg, the $250 gets deducted before reimbursement. Three months later, ear infection, he has to satisfy the $250 again. Not the case here. So if I get a bill for... Read More
