Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

We are very very happy with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. We have never had an issue with any claim - and there have been many- and compensation is very fast. No waiting. They also send emails checking how our dogs are doing. We will always have our pets insured through Healthy Paws.

My German Shepherd, Lukka, had a medical situation involving two trips to Veterinary Medical Emergency Clinics and ending in a week long stay at the ICU at Texas A&M University Veterinary Hospital. After many tests and ultrasounds, it was determined that surgery was the only real fix. After surgery, he was sent home and there were many meds and followup trips to my local veterinarian. Some of these meds are life long medications. It seemed like I was submitting claims every week. The surgery and previous two claims at the emergency clinics were over $8,000.00. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance covered all the claims, no questions asked. And being able to file online is so fast and easy. I feel... Read More

My Labrador has had five...yes five...bowel obstruction surgeries. Each costing approximately $6000.00 once all was said and done. healthypaws saved his life and my wallet. I am so grateful for them. This is the second pet insurance company I've gone with and healthypaws is exactly what I was needing...especially since my boy is a repeat offender.

Healthy Paws pet insurance may be the best financial decision I’ve ever made. When my dog needed surgery they communicated often and in a timely manner. I was able to not hesitate when making decisions about his care because I knew Healthy Paws was behind me.

I am so happy that I found Healthy Paws! I was skeptical about pet insurance coverage prior to signing up and thought that it would either be too expensive and not worth it or that they would barely cover the bills... I was pleasently surprised to see that not only is their monthly premium very affordable ($29 a month for my cat), but my plan has a single $100 deductable and covers 90% of all tests, procedures, and medications. My cat was recently sick and I spent over $1500 in 3 days! Healthy Paws covered over $1100 after my deductable kicked in! I got the reimbursements in roughly 1 week after sending in the claims. Long story short(er) the company is great and I highly recommend them!

Healthy Paws came in when I needed it most. So easy to use. Just uploaded my invoices and medical records using the app and got reimbursement a week or two later. No issues or hassle.

We have been fortunate to have Healthy Paws Insurance for our last two dogs. Unfortunately our pets have had issues especially our current boy Rudy, but this insurance has never hesitated to be by our side and pay on the claims promptly and without any undue questioning or procrastination. I would never consider having a pet without Healthy Paws. Almost a important as a great veterinarian which The Rudy has both.

I have 2 small breed dogs (Shih Tzu/ Maltese mixed and Biewer Yorkie mixed) and I have enrolled my dogs since 12/05/2014, when they were about 4 and 5 years old. After a very thorough research and analysis of all the pet policies out there, Healthy Paws was the most affordable one with great benefits. I paid about $80-90 for both dogs per month with a 90% reimbursement and $100 deductible per year and there are no caps on claims. It doesn't cover preventative care but enrolling in Healthy Paws Pet Insurance gave me a peace of mind that I will be able to afford medical care for my dogs in case they needed it. My dogs are generally healthy and I didn't have to submit any claims but... Read More

We've been with Healthy Paws since October 2014. In November of 2017, our dog was diagnosed with a partial tear of her ACL. Healthy Paws covered her entire treatment including bi-weekly laser treatments. Unfortunately, the partial tear became a complete tear earlier this year that required surgery. Healthy Paws was with us the entire way, and we are grateful for them. We only paid the original $100 deductible, and HP reimbursed us 90% for all of our costs including the surgery. It's so easy to submit a claim online and they pay FAST which is greatly appreciated. I would highly recommend Healthy Paws for any pet lovers out there looking for insurance to protect their furry loved... Read More

I have a Frenchie-Pug mix, Ariel, who was a rescue, so I knew very little about her medical background. I got a policy through Healthy Paws because I never want to be that person who asks, "can we afford this?" If one of my fur kids isn't well, I will always do whatever it takes to get them better. When the weather started heating up, I noticed Ariel struggling to breathe (which is common in short-nosed breeds) and it broke my heart. I had her evaluated to see if she'd be a candidate for airway surgery; it's something I've always known was an option but in all my years of owning pugs I hadn't had one that seemed to need it. Turns out Ariel had several issues that were causing her... Read More
