Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Pricing: How much does Healthy Paws cost?

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

When I got our dachshund, my family and friends laughed at me when I got insurance on him. They thought it was wasted money. But I had done my research and I knew that this was a breed that was prone to IVDD. I looked at several different insurance companies and their reviews and Healthy Paws came out on top. Fast forward 2 years. My 4 year old pup tried to walk up a set of stairs and became paralyzed. We rushed him to the nearest neurosurgeon for surgery. When I got home, I called Healthy Paws to check my coverage and they told me not to worry. ..I was covered and just to worry about my dog, Dinky. Since the surgery, they have texted me to check in on my dog and have processed my... Read More

Healthy Paws literally saved my dog’s life! Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to get her the treatment she needed. Healthy Paws paid my claims quickly and it gave me peace of mind to know that I would be reimbursed quickly following some large expenses. Knowing I had great insurance made all the difference.

Healthy Paws is the best! It is extremely easy to submit claims; my vet sends me a PDF file with my invoice via e-mail, and I just upload this on the Health Paws website. In addition, Healthy Paws processes my claims in an extremely timely manner, with everything resolved in less than two weeks. Any coverage benefits are deposited directly to my checking account. The whole process couldn't be easier! All this for an extremely reasonable cost. Add in great customer service and I am VERY happy that I chose Healthy Paws.

We've had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance ever since we rescued our fur child 3 years ago and we are so happy with the level of service we receive from Healthy Paws. Although you never want to submit a claim because it means something bad has happened to your pup, the claims process is easy and Healthy Paws always makes it a point to check in on your dog after the fact. Highly recommend!

I picked Healthy Paws insurance for my Boston terrier based on its commitment to helping homeless pets. The company is caring and compassionate, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Ernie recently lost his eye to glaucoma, and though it was a difficult time, dealing with Healthy Paws could not have been easier. Filing claims involves nothing more than snapping and sending a picture on your phone, and payment is prompt. I am so grateful for the incredible service and the peace of mind having such good coverage brings. Thank you!

I assure anyone who reads this that I am not exaggerating when I write that Healthy Paws has been an absolute life saver for my family. Recently, we fostered an Alaskan malamute, Tuna, because her people were going through challenging times. When it became clear that they would no longer be able to care for Tuna, of course our heart broke at the idea of letting her go. As a young couple with a wedding, and hopefully home-ownership, on the horizon we knew that caring for a giant breed dog would not be easy. After many tumultuous nights, we established a budget that, although challenging, would work for our new slightly larger family. Recently, Tuna has had issues with serious nasal... Read More

Healthy Paws is the most reliable, efficient pet insurance I ever carried. My only regret is not knowing about them sooner. We have been insuring our Beagle for the past 6 years with them, after wasting a lot of $$ with another company, Healthy Paws offers many options of payments and coverage. We selected the 90% coverage after a $200 annual deductible and Healthy Paws came through every time and direct deposited the full 90% within 10 days of submitting the claim. Very impressive. They even followed up to find out how our Pooch was doing after his surgery; this was done by a caring and REAL person not an automated message. I am telling every pet owner I meet about Healthy Paws,... Read More

I’ve tried a few insurance companies, and Healthy Paws is by far the best. Not only is their coverage fantastic, but the company truly cares. When my dog was sick, they took care of getting the records while I was able to focus on my dog. Love this company and the people that work there!

My five year old newfoundland pup has had so many health problems. From ruptured cruciate ligaments and an immune mediated blood disorder to most recently sepsis thanks to a bone getting stuck in her intestine. All have been very expensive, but healthy paws has not only covered the medical costs, but they have actually cared about her recovery. I truly am not sure what I would do without them. For the rest of our lives, we will tell everyone about how wonderful healthy paws pet insurance is!! Oh, and they do amazing things for homeless and disadvantaged pups around the country, I love that. Leslie, Anya and baby Jimmeny
