Overall Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Excellent)

Healthy Paws ranks highly among the pet insurance companies we've reviewed. The company offers a single pet insurance plan with multiple reimbursement options, comprehensive coverage for alternative therapy and no caps of any kind.

Reimbursement is based on the cost of your actual vet bill and there is no limit as to the type of or how many claims you can make for covered conditions. Healthy Paws provides all of this at the same or sometimes lower prices than less comprehensive plans.

Healthy Paws Coverage

Coverage - 4.5 / 5

Compared to other pet insurance providers, Healthy Paws offers the most comprehensive coverage and does so without any caps or limits. Policies cover all accidents and illnesses without restrictions for hereditary or congenital conditions.

The company also includes services like advanced testing, surgeries, hospital stays, and prescription medications, as well as alternative therapies and emergency care.

Healthy Paws does not have a wellness plan, but they will treat canine hip dysplasia if it is not a pre-existing condition.

Benefit Limits

Benefit Limits - 4.5 / 5

Where Healthy Paws really asserts its dominance is in benefit limits. Regardless of the plan you choose, there are no caps on coverage, either annual, lifetime, or per incident.

Generally speaking, other companies offer unlimited benefits as an option available only for their highest level and most expensive plans. This is not the case with Healthy Paws; it is included in their standard price plan.

As long as the condition or treatment is covered under the plan (very few restrictions do apply) there is no limit to what the company will pay to make your animal well.

One Healthy Paws customer reported to us that the company recently paid out over $18,000 on a $20,000 vet bill in order to save the life of a dog suffering from cancer. More recently, another customer wrote, "I have a six-year-old German shepherd. Unfortunately, he already has had more than his share of problems, from herniated discs to cancer. Healthy Paws has not given me any hassle or trouble, even though his expenses to date are approaching $40,000. This was by far the best financial decision I have ever made."

Reimbursement & Deductibles

Reimbursement - 4 / 5

As with deductibles, Healthy Paws is in line with the industry's best companies by allowing you the flexibility of customizing your reimbursement percentage as well.

You can select either 70%, 80%, or 90% at the outset of your policy. Healthy Paws reimbursement is based on the actual veterinary bill.

The company will compile all covered treatments for a given claim and pay your chosen percent after you've met the deductible. As with low deductibles, high percentage payouts are going to equal a more costly monthly premium.
In general, Healthy Paws pays on a reimbursement model. Policyholders pay the vet up front for treatment, submit their claims to Healthy Paws, and receive a reimbursement. However, in situations where pet owners can't pay their vet at the time of treatment, they have the option of contacting Healthy Paws and asking them to pay the vet directly. If the veterinary hospital is willing to accept payment from Healthy Paws, the insurer can work directly with it to expedite access to medical records and claim processing. This direct payment option is available on a case-by-case basis and applies to treatment by any licensed vet in the United States. It is not limited to any specific network of vets.

Deductibles - 4.5 / 5

Like all the best pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws allows you to customize your deductible to best suit your financial needs.

Values can be set at $100, $250, and $500. Lower deductibles do result in higher premiums. But many customers will appreciate the flexibility Healthy Paws offers.

Enrollment & Waiting Periods

Enrollment - 5 / 5

Healthy Paws enrolls pets 8 weeks and older. While some companies have no upper age enrollment restrictions, Healthy Paws limits coverage to pets 13.99 years old and younger.

Some companies offer accident coverage immediately upon premium payment. Healthy Paws imposes a 15-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses.

The waiting period for hip dysplasia is 12 months. Healthy Paws will not cover hip dysplasia if the pet was 6 years or older at the time of enrollment. Other companies we review have no such restrictions on hip dysplasia.

For pets younger than 6 you'll have to provide documentation of a complete physical within the last 12 months. Pets older than 6 must have had a complete examination within the last 30 days.

I can't even tell you how happy I am with my experience with Healthy Paws Insurance. I'm a first timer when it comes to pet insurance, but when I decided to get a breed of dog that is known to have several health issues, it seemed like a good idea. I'm so glad I did it!! At 7 months old my baby needed surgery to take care of a few congenital issues. I was prepared to pay to be sure my guy was made healthy and whole and would have been happy to get 1/2 my investment back, but really wasn't expecting much. I know how companies can be. Trying to make a profit above all else, cutting corners, finding loop-holes, making you jump thru endless hoops. But Healthy Paws came to my rescue!!... Read More

Healthy Paws has been great! My beloved Sibe Husky just under went her second TPLO surgery. I wasn't expecting any benefits due to what I have read about pre-existing conditions. But I figured, what the heck, and submitted anyway. To my surprise, it was covered! They also gone on to cover her medications and post-op therapy. And I received an email asking how she was doing since the surgery. I thought that was a great touch! Admitting, the monthly expense is high, and was thinking of finding a lower cost company. But after this experience, I will be sticking with Healthy Paws! They have my upmost gratitude for helping out with keeping my girl happy and healthy. I would recommend... Read More

Healthy Paws covered my 1-year old Golden Retrievers expensive and unexpected surgery without an issue or question. They even followed up a week later with an email saying they hoped Oliver was doing better. I highly recommend Healthy Paws!

Like for ourselves, we bought insurance for our beloved Mabel with the anticipation that we wouldn’t need it or use it. Unfortunately, she has required an MRI, hernia surgery and, most recently, a toe amputation due to a nasty infection. We would do anything for our beautiful pup so we have had to do these procedures. Healthy Paws is exceptional. They have covered her claims and have always checked in on Mabel after each procedure and just regularly. They truly CARE! They love what they do and we love them for it. We urge you, if you are considering pet insurance for your four-legged family member, to get it with Healthy Paws. They are incredible. You could not find better insurance or... Read More

We received a sympathy card from Healthy Paws staff, Bodey’s health insurance company. They were there for us throughout all of Bodey’s treatments and their kindness and understanding helped provide hope. They paid out 90% of all Bodey’s bills which totaled over $23,000.00. It was comforting to know that we were able to afford to give him comfort and quality care to the end. We were so impressed with Healthy Paws that we immediately insured our new puppy with them. We didn’t even consider shopping around. Thank you Healthy Paws! We couldn’t have given our boy the care he needed.

I bought pet insurance when my dog was still a puppy and figured I wouldn’t need it until she was an old dog. I never expected my three and a half year old dog to need more than regular vet visits - but she tore her cruciate ligament while walking, just walking. It was unexpected as she was a healthy, active, and very physically fit dog. I was looking at a big surgery and thousands and thousands of dollars in bills. Healthy Paws made this incredibly stressful time much easier - I was able to upload all of her medical information and bills on their website and it was approved within days. Within a week of approval I received a check and an email from the company checking in to see how my... Read More

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance was wonderful in helping me with my dog's two torn ACLs. They were patient, kind, and understanding in both the emails and on the phone. They really cared and removed the stress that I had regarding the treatment costs so I could focus on Suzie's recovery.

I've had Healthy Paws coverage on my 2 little Beagle mixes since they were pups. I've never regretted it. The premiums are fair and Healthy Paws is very clear on what they cover and don't cover. We've had to use the policies on both dogs. They were both bitten by poisonous snakes at separate times and Healthy Paws was instrumental in helping to be able to get them the proper care. Healthy Paws coverage takes the worry out of bringing our boys to the vet. Of course we still pay for their preventative care and normal maintenance out of our own pockets but in the event of any kind of unfortunate emergency or illness, Healthy Paws is there to help. The claims process is super easy with... Read More

We adopted an 8 week old mixed puppy and since day one he has been riddled with medical conditions ... from food allergies to stomach problems and Healthy Paws was with us every step of the way from speedy claim processing to speedy payments and most importantly emails checking to see on how Abraham was doing... Abe had an accident where he needed immediate surgery when he ran full speed with a stick and impaled himself... if it wasn’t for healthy paws we wouldn’t have been able to monetarily support Abe’s accident proned behavior... thanks healthy paws for helping Abe and us !

Healthy Paws has been nothing short than a life saver. My 1 1/2 year old French Bulldog suffered from numerous random medical issues and recently was dignaosed with IBD. Needless to say their were many tears and more vet visits but what was constant and dependable was his coverage with HP. My claims have always been quickly processed and payments issued. The one thing I never worried about was if I could afford to get my sweet boy healthy. Getting HP insurance was by far the best decision I made. Also their app is very easy to use and submitting claims takes a few minutes. Thank you HP for being an amazing company that truly loves our pets.
